Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 61 to 80, which mainly consist of correspondence relating to appointments to posts. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 1 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1 to 100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and any other papers accompanying the original letter. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 69 and 79 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they were not to be destroyed. Number 62 is missing.
61. March 1856. Letter from Mr W N L Richards, 1st Grade Customs Preventive Officer Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General so that he may deliver a letter. Copy of reply, letter should be sent to Personal Secretary. See also 103, 137, 651, 1446.
63. March 1856. Copy of reply to Major G J Montgomery, Brigade Major, Agra. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
64. February to March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W R Campbell, 28th Madras Native Infantry, Madras. Asks to be appointed Magistrate in Rangoon or Moulmein. Endorsed: no answer, Campbell is appointed to Hyderabad.
65. March 1856. Letter from Colonel B J H Birch, C B , Secretary, to the Government Military Department. Forwards a letter from the Officer Commanding at Barrackpore, asking for permission for the large room in the Commander-in-Chief 's house near the Flag Staff Ghant to be made available for Divine Service the following Sunday; also encloses a letter from the Rev C J Quartley. Copies of replies, to Colonel E Pettingal, Brigadier Commanding Barrackpore, granting request, and to Mr Sharp Barrackpore, arranging this.
66. March 1856. Letter from Mr H Piddington, Calcutta. Forwards 2 pamphlets for the Governor General. Copy of reply, acknowledging receipt.
67. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W R Campbell, 28th Madras Native Infantry, Madras. Having been nominated to Hyderabad as 2nd Assistant to the Resident, withdraws his application for the Magistracy of Rangoon and Moulmein. See also 64.
68. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W R Campbell, 28th Madras Native Infantry, Madras. Returns thanks for his appointment to Hyderabad. See also 67.
69. March 1856. Letter from the Sir Arthur Duller, Calcutta. Sends pamphlet, and asks when it would be convenient to the Governor General to receive a deputation of the officers of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society, with a request that His Lordship will accept the office of Patron, and Her Ladyship would accept the office of Patroness (Pamphlet no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, accepting the office, and granting audience. See also 2372, 2393, 4053, 4246, 5811, 5822. Governor General 's Book No. 29.
70. March 1856. Letter from Captain R Ouseley, 34th Native Infantry, Landour. Asks for an appointment as Cantonment Joint Magistrate at Lucknow, or Jullundur. Copy of reply, no vacancy. See also 1.
71. March 1856. Copy of reply to Captain R J Edgell, 53rd Native Infantry, Cuttack. No vacancy at present, application noted.
72. March 1856. Letter from Mr H Piddington, Coroner, Calcutta. Asks for a suitable appointment, states his services in a Memorial. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted.
73. March 1856. Letter from Mr A P Simkins, Madras. Asks for a suitable employment under the Commissioners of Rangoon, Nagpore or Oudh, and submits his testimonials. Copy of reply, to make application to General Outram, Major Phayre, or Mr Plowden, as Commissioners of the Provinces.
74. March 1856. Letter from Mr M Siret, Portuguese Interpreter, Supreme Court, Calcutta. Asks for an appointment, with testimonials. Copy of reply, Governor General does not nominate uncovenanted officers.
75. March 1856. Letter from Mr W Davis, 1st grade Preventive Officer, Calcutta. Asks for an uncovenanted appointment in Oudh, and submits testimonials. Copy of reply, Governor General does not nominate uncovenanted officers, testimonials returned.
76. March 1856. Letter from Major Hamilton, Personal Secretary, to the Lieutenant Governor Alipore. Returns a card.
77. March 1856. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, Civil Auditor, Fort William. Forwards for the use of the Governor General an appendix to the Book of Civil Establishments.
78. March 1856. Letter from Rai Praunauth Bose Bahadoor, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to his letter asking for an audience. Copy of reply, audience refused. See also 151, 158, 424; Mr Edmonstone's letter, No 156; Mr Beadon's letter, No 157.
79. March 1856. Letter from Baboo Narendra Krishna, Calcutta. Submits explanation for his assumption of the title of Rajah Note for letter asking for an explanation, by Lord Canning; copy of this letter; visiting card of Narendra Krishna, with the prefix Raja added in ink; note of reply to explanatory letter, by Lord Canning; copy of this reply, refusing to admit title of Rajah. Endorsed: see letter from Governor General to Mr Halliday and his reply, No 10. See also 150.
80. March 1856. Letter from Captain W A Riach, 12th Madras Native Infantry, Bangalore. Asks for an appointment in the Oudh Irregular Force, with original testimonials. Copy of reply, too many officers absent from his regiment already, returns testimonials. See also 1004.
