Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 81 to 100, which mainly consist of correspondence relating to appointments to posts. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 1 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1 to 100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Number 95 has a red cross on it to indicate that it was not to be destroyed.
81. March 1856. Letter from Captain R H D Tulloh, 39th Native Infantry, Jhelum. Asks for employment in the Civil or Political Department. Copy of reply, application noted. Governor General’s Book No. 14.
82. March 1856. Letter from Brigadier E Pettingal, Commanding at Barrackpore. Forwards an application from the Chaplain for the use of the Flag Staff Bungalow on Good Friday for Divine Service. Copies of 2 replies, granting request.
83. March 1856. Letter from Tehsildar of Coonoor. States that the Collector has recommended to the Madras Government that his salary be raised, but nothing has yet been done. Copy of reply, nothing known.
84. March 1856. Letter from Captain A P C Elliot, 5th Light Cavalry, Assistant to the General Superintendent for the suppression of Thuggee, Indore, Mhow. States his services, and asks for advancement; wishes to be Political Agent at Mehidpore. Copies of testimonials. Copies of 3 replies, the agency is to be abolished, application noted. See also 36I, 475.
85. March 1856. Letter from Mrs E F Critchley, Calcutta. Praying for a donation from Lord Canning for a project of hers, some patent food. Copy of reply, having made reference to Dr Vos, application is refused. Copy of letter to Dr Vos. See also 130, 139.
86. March 1856. Letter from Major H M Durand, Bengal Engineers, Calcutta. Will accept the office of Superintendent Engineer, N W Provinces, if he cannot otherwise be employed. Asks for audience. Copies of 3 replies, offering the post as above, and granting audience. See also 34.
87. March 1856. Letter from Mr E Monckton, Deputy Commissioner 3rd class, Punjab, on leave Calcutta. Encloses 2 letters from Mrs Marriott the wife of Mr G W Marriott late a chaplain in the Bengal Establishment about her wretched condition in consequence of her husband's dismissal from his chaplaincy, and asks for relief. Copy of reply, asking for time to examine the records. Also draft reply. See also 258.
88. February to March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J P Martin, 1st Native Infantry, Sub Assistant Commissary General, Debrooghur. Asks for civil employment in Oudh, states his services. Copy of reply, application noted.
89. March 1856. Letter from Reverend M Barker, Chaplain at Peshawur. Sends a letter from the Reverend Mr Yocke to Lady Canning (no longer enclosed) 2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, acknowledged.
89a. March 1856. Copy of letter to Captain Rennie, Honourable Company's Steamer, 'Feroze'. Asking him to take 2 letters from Lord Canning to the Honourable F Bruce at Cairo.
90. March 1856. Letter from Captain A Harris, 1st Bengal Light Cavalry Calcutta. Asks for re-employment in the civil or political line. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted. Governor General’s Book No. 17.
91. March 1856. Letter from Mr R Orr, Deputy Collector and Deputy Magistrate, Bareilly. Asks for employment in Oudh, with a reference. Copy of reply, request should be addressed to the Chief Commissioner.
92. March 1856. Letter from Baboo Rae Mukhun Lall, late uncovenanted Deputy Collector Patna
States his services, and asks for employment in Oudh. Copy of reply, request should be sent to the Chief Commissioner.
93. February to March 1856. Letter from Mr E H Anson, 1st Assistant Resident for Central India, on leave, off Aden. Asks to be made Deputy Commissioner of Simla and Superintendant of Hill States. Copy of reply, to re-apply when post is vacant. Also draft reply.
94. March 1856. Letter from Dr G Buist, LLD , Editor of the Bombay Times. Offers himself as candidate for the office of Superintendant of Public Instruction in Oudh, or for any suitable employment; statement of his qualifications. Copy of reply, application noted, further details of qualifications required. See also 508.
95. March 1856. Letter from Reverend J C Thompson, Secretary, Free School, Calcutta. Sends a letter from the Governors of the school, asking the Governor General to be Patron of the school. Copy of reply, accepting, annual subscription of 200 Rupees.
96. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J R G G Shortt, 7th Bombay Native Infantry, Camp, Sealgaon. Returns thanks for his appointment as Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab.
97. March 1856. Letter from Captain E J Lawder, Assistant Quarter Master General of the Army, Madras. Thanks Lord Dalhousie for complying with his application in favour of Lieutenant Lane.
98. March 1856. Letter from Mr H Lambert, Small Cause Court, Calcutta. Enclosing a letter for Lord Canning (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Endorsed: dinner list. From Lord Bessborough. Governor General's Book No. 23.
99. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant G F J Lewin, 2nd Madras European Light Infantry, 2nd in command Infantry, Oudh Irregular Force, Lucknow. Asks to be transferred to a Civil appointment in the Punjab. Copy of reply, appointed Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab.
100. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J T Smith, Mint Master, Calcutta. Returns thanks for a letter enclosing copy of a letter from Lord Panmure to Lord Canning, about the proposed destruction of Cronstadt. Governor General's Book No. 15.
