Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 101 to 125, consisting of correspondence relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 2 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 101 to 200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 109, 122, and 123 have a red cross on them to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’.
101. March 1856. Letter from Baboo Callyprosenna Chuttorgee [?], a student in the Hindoo Metropolitan College, Calcutta. Solicits employment and an audience with the Governor General.
102. March 1856. Letter from Colonel William Sage, Agra. Asks to be made Auditor of Public Works Department, which post is about to be created. Copy of reply, no such appointment at present considered.
103. March 1856. Letter from Mr W N L Richard, 1st grade Customs Preventive Officer, Calcutta. Encloses a letter from his mother Mrs Moscrop asking that her 2 sons may have better appointments: with a letter to Mrs Moscrop from Captain Charles Reddish, her uncle, written in 1808. Copy of reply, application noted, very doubtful if it will be successful. See also 61, 137, 651, 1446.
104. March 1856. Copy of reply to the Reverend J Richards. He will confirm a statement made by L M Chopin about her condition.
105. March 1856. Letter from Mr Francisco Pereira, Calcutta. With a letter from Count Lauradio, Portuguese Ambassador in London, to Lord Canning. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Endorsed: dinner list.
106. March 1856. Letter from Major H M Durand, Spences Hotel, Calcutta. Asks for an audience. Endorsed: Tomorrow at 11.
107. March 1856. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Camp, near Sehore. About 2 medical appointments vacant in the Bhopal and Bhopawur, with a letter addressed to Sir Robert. Copy of reply, Dr Thomson is appointed to the Bhopal Agency, and no knowledge of vacancy at Bhopawur. See also 119, 24.
108. March 1856. Letter from Mr J S A H Byrne, Calcutta. Reports change of address, also another letter asking for employment. See also 45, 62.
109. March 1856. Letter from Captain A H M Chesney, 23rd Madras Native Infantry , Deputy Commissioner 2nd class, Nagpore. Asks for an inquiry into his case, and a transfer to the Oudh Commission in the event of his acquittal. Copy of reply, the Governor General has seen all the papers, and sees no occasion for an inquiry. See also 6885.
112. March 1856. Letter from Mr B C Bailey, Inspector in charge of the Telegraph Office Calcutta. About the delivery of mails to the Governor General; and a memorandum about this from the Private Secretary's office.
113. March 1856. Letter from Mr W Muir, Secretary, to Government, North West Provinces, Agra. Replies about the qualifications of Lieutenant G F S Brown, Deputy Commissioner 2nd class, Saugor and Nerbudda Territories. Copy of earlier letter to Muir requesting this information. See also 46, 211, 481.
114. March 1856. Letter from Colonel H Goodwyn, Chief Engineer Public Works Department, Lower Provinces, Calcutta. States that on the summit of the old Dome of the Government House which the present one has supplanted, there was a figure of Britannia, and that its absence did not look amiss until the erection of the Honourable Company's Coat of Arms over the East and West wings; and begs to be informed whether the statue is to be restored. Copy of reply, Lord Canning will be glad to see the models. Endorsed: Where is the figure? See also 138, 218, 298, 325.
115. March 1856. Letter from Colonel T F Tait, A D C to the Queen, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, interview granted.
116. March 1856. Letter from Monsieur Delmary, Calcutta. Applies for a subscription to enable him to build a theatre. Copy of reply, declining.
117. March 1856. Letter from Captain H Yule, Deputy Secretary Public Works Department, Calcutta. About a portrait of Warren Hastings in the Government House, and 2 other letters about this picture. See also 118, 285, 291.
118. March 1856. Memorandum of Public Works Department. Requests that the portrait of Warren Hastings in the Council Chamber may be forwarded to have a cabinet copy of it executed for the Marquis of Dalhousie. See also 117, 118, 285, 291.
119. April 1856. Copy of reply to Sir R N C Hamilton. About an appointment of an Assistant Surgeon at Bhopawur.
120. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J H Jenkins, Instructor and Quarter Master, 44 Native Infantry, Camp, Futtehpoor. Asks for a staff appointment. Copy of reply, too many officers absent from his regiment at present. See also 359, 499, 1005.
121. March 1856. Letter from Reverend J Richards, Junior Chaplain, St John's Church, Bollygunge. Testifies to the truth of the statement in Miss Chopin's petition. Register Nos. 104, 128.
