Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 126 to 150, consisting of correspondence relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 2 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 101 to 200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 138 and 150 have a red cross on them to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’. Number 147 is missing.
126. March 1856. Letter from Baboo Greedhur Bose Roy. For himself and other projectors of the Chitpore Charitable Vernacular School, asks for subscription. Copy of reply, subscribing 50 Rupees. Register Nos. 171, 814, 1387.
129. March 1856. Letter from Mr G Plowden, Commissioner of Nagpore, Seetabuldee. Reports that the position of Staff Officer of the Nagpore Irregular Force is vacant owing to the transfer of Lieutenant Cumberlege, and recommends Captain Day of 17th Madras Native Infantry, gives reasons against another candidate. Copy of reply, Day's appointment will be passed if a formal application is made. See also 23, 191, 223, 225.
130. March 1856. Letter from Mrs E F Critchley, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to her earlier letter. See also 75, 85, 139.
131. March 1856. Letter from Mr James Hume, Senior Magistrate, Calcutta Police. Submits a book, and desires to place the proposition therein before the public, under the patronage of the Government. Copy of reply, the Governor General will lend his support. See also 353, 64I.
132. March to May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant T J H Keyes, 17th Madras Native Infantry, 2nd Assistant Civil Engineer, Public Works Department Arcot. Asks to be employed in the Oudh, Nagpore or Mysore Commissions, with testimonial. Copies of 2 replies, appointing Lieutenant Keyes Assistant Commissioner of the 3rd class in the Punjab, and returning testimonial.
133. March 1856. Letter from Baboo K M Chatterjee, 2nd Assistant Civil Auditor's office, Calcutta. Asks for promotion to new office of Assistant. Copy of reply, new office, if sanctioned, will be in the gift of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
134. March 1856. Letter from Mr W H D Duval, Calcutta. Asks for employment. Copies of testimonials enclosed. Copy of reply, Governor General does not nominate uncovenanted officers.
134a. March 1856. Copy of letter to Dr Allan Webb, Calcutta. Stating that the Governor General does not wish any change to be made in the practice of the meetings of the Governors of the Martinière.
135. March 1856. Letter from Captain H L Thuillier, Deputy Survey General, Calcutta. Forwards some maps for the Governor General. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
136. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J A Brereton, 33rd Native Infantry, Lahore. Asks about his appointment as Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, with copy of an earlier letter. Copy of reply, his appointment was not confirmed, as there were already 7 officers absent from his regiment.
137. March 1856. Letter from Mr W N L Richard, 1st grade Preventive Officer, Custom House, Calcutta. Submits copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 61, 103, 651, 1446.
138. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Goodwyn, Chief Engineer Public Works Department, Lower Provinces. States that the old figure of Britannia had fallen to pieces, and sends a rough sketch, and proposes to send a model. See also 114, 218, 298, 325.

139a. March 1856. Copy of letter to Major A Fytche. The Governor General will be glad to see him.
140. March 1856. Letter from Mr Thomas Fell, Calcutta. Offers himself as Deputy Magistrate of the 3rd grade in Oudh, with testimonials. Copy of reply, Governor General does not nominate uncovenanted officers. Testimonials returned.
141. March 1856. Copy of reply to Pushruee Shah, a native of Persia, Calcutta, that his petition is being considered by the Secretary to the Government in the Foreign Department.
142. March 1856. Letter from Mr P Taylor, Civil Service, Bancoorah. Wishes an audience to appeal for promotion. Copy of reply, to make application for promotion in writing.
143. March to April 1856. Letter from Captain H O Mayne, 6th Madras Light Cavalry, Mhow. States his services and asks for re-employment. With testimonials. Copy of reply, application noted.
144. March 1856. Letter from Major A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. About Captain Wright's appointment to the Tounghoop Road. Copy of earlier letter to Phayre, forwarding application by Wright. See also 11, 53, 216, 792, 700, 950, 1112.

148. March to April 1856. Letter from Mr E H Lushington, Officiating Collector of Nuddea, Kishnaghur. Applies for the Chief Magistracy of Calcutta which is shortly to fall vacant. Copy of reply, the post has already been offered to Wauchope.
149. March 1856. Letter from Mr J S Torrens, Civil Service, Calcutta. Forwards an introduction from his brother at home to the Governor General. (no longer enclosed) Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
150. March 1856. Letter from Mr W Grey, Bengal Secretary Calcutta. Writes about Narendra Krishna's assumption of the title of Rajah, with 4 related papers. Copy of reply, enclosing papers in this case, and a copy of the letter sent to Narendra Krishna. See also 79.
