Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 176 to 200, consisting of correspondence relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 2 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 101 to 200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 178, 180, 185, 190, 194, and 200 have a red cross on them to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’. Numbers 182 and 187 are missing.
176. March to April 1856. Letter from Lieutenant A G Tod, 1st Madras Light Cavalry, Bangalore. Returns thanks for his appointment as Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab. See also 59, 201.
177. April 1856. Letter from Mr D J Money, Civil Service, Calcutta. Submits his explanation in support of his claims to hold a seat in the Sudder Court, with copy of references. Copy of reply, acknowledgment; also draft reply. See also 159, 165.
178. March to April 1856. Letter from Brevet Major G E Hollings, Deputy Commissioner Punjab, Shahpore. States the circumstances under which the authorities granted him permission to resign his appointment, asks for re-employment, with enclosures. Copy of reply, the case will not be re-opened. 179. April 1856. Copy of reply to Mr W J Moore, Hooghly. The Governor General does not see any reason to interfere in his case.
180. April 1856. Letter from the Hon. J A Dorin, Member of Council, Calcutta. With a letter from Mr Gomes, Reporter to the Legislative Council, repudiating any connection with an article in one of the Bombay newspapers on the new Governor General. Endorsed, answered, receipt acknowledged.
181. April 1856. Letter from Baboo Thakoor Dass Biswas & others, Managers of the Vernacular Charitable School at Cornwallis Street, Calcutta. Asks for a donation. Copy of reply, refusing. See also 181, 190, 287.
181a. April 1856. Copy of letter to the Editor of The Englishman. That Lord Canning has not been regularly supplied with the newspaper.
183. March to April 1856. Letter from Baboo Money Mohun Bysack, Dacca. Asks for an appointment in Oudh, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not nominate uncovenanted officers.
184. April 1856. Letter from Mr E A Reade, Calcutta. Asks for an audience. Copy of reply, granted.
185. April 1856. Letter from Baboo Peary Chund Mittre, Officiating Secretary, Vernacular Literature Society, Calcutta. Asks Lord Canning to become Patron of the Society, encloses prospectus. Copy of reply, accepting, and promising subscription of 200 Rupees. Also draft reply.
186. March to April 1856. Letter from Mr G W Newman, Bangalore. Asks for an appointment in Mysore as 1st or 2nd class Executive Officer Public Works Department, or for a post as an Inspector of Schools, with copies of documents. Copy of reply, declining.
188. March to April 1856. Letter from Major Gen. H Sargent, Madras Establishment, Bangalore. Asks for employment, with one enclosure. Copy of reply, application noted, suitable employment unlikely. Governor General’s Book No 31.
189. April 1856. Letter from Dr A Macrae, M D, Assistant Surgeon H M 53rd Foot, Calcutta. Introduces Lieutenant J S Ross, 36th Madras Native Infantry, employed in the Survey Department, in Burma.
190. April 1856. Letter from Mr W G Young, Inspector of Public Institutions, Calcutta. Is not able to furnish a list of the Calcutta School but hopes to collect returns shortly. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information about the Vernacular Charitable School No. 4 Cornwallis Street. See also 287, 181, 182.
191. March to April 1856. Letter from Mr G Plowden, Commissioner of Nagpore, Seetabuldee. About appointments to the Nagpore Commission. Copy of reply, stating how vacancies in the Nagpore Commission will be filled in future. See also 23, 129, 223, 225.
192. April 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J S Ross, 36th Madras Native Infantry, Executive Officer, Martaban and Tonghoo Road, on leave, Calcutta. Asks to be transferred to civil employment in India, states his qualifications. Copy of reply, he is nominated Assistant Commissioner 3rd class in the Punjab.
193. April 1856. Copy of reply to Mr W J Moore, Hooghly. Acknowledging receipt of his letter, transferred to the Home Department.
194. April 1856. Letter from Mr C S Hogg, Administrator General, Calcutta. Replying to a letter about the estate of the late Nicholas Fandon, which appears to consist entirely of heavily encumbered indigo factories; he will write at length on the subject officially.
194a. April 1856. Letter from Copy of a letter to Lieutenant E St George. Offering him the acting appointment of Secretary, and Member of the Board of Examiners, College of Fort William.
195. April 1856. Letter from Sir J W Colvile, Chief Justice, Calcutta. Introduces Mr A Schlagintweit.
196. April 1856. Letter from Mr J Remfry, Calcutta. Forwards a publication for the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
197. April 1856. Letter from Major A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. Has made no arrangement for relieving Lieutenant Aylesbury in his appointment of Superintendent of the Flotilla, as it is likely that Captain Brooking will return during the present month; besides he does not think that Lieutenant Aylesbury is absolutely required at Dalhousie at once. Copy of earlier letter about this.
198. March to April 1856. Letter from Lieutenant R C Burn, 5th Madras Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant Commissioner Martaban. Wishes his post as Additional Assistant Commissioner to be confirmed. 1 anna stamp. Copy of reply to Lieutenant Colonel Sir A Bogle, asking for further details. See also 370.
199. April 1856. Letter from Lady Calthorpe. Encloses a letter for her son supposed to have left Suez with Lord and Lady Canning on 13 February.
200. April 1856. Letter from Mr J C Beddy, Supernumerary Master in the Government College at Bareilly. Asks for a grant; with enclosures. 2nd letter from Beddy, withdrawing his first letters. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
