Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 201 to 225, consisting of correspondence relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 3 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 201 to 300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 214, 218, 219, and 220 have a red cross on them to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’. Numbers 204 and 224 are missing.
201. March to April 1856. Letter from Lieutenant A G Tod, 1st Madras Light Cavalry, Bangalore. States that since accepting the offer of a Junior Assistant Commissionership in the Punjab, he has heard that he will be subject to a loss of 200 Rupees a month, and therefore declines the appointment, and asks for another. Copy of reply, appointment cancelled. See also 59, 176, 201.
202. April 1856. Letter from Sir J Outram, K C B, Chief Commissioner, Lucknow. About the vacant command in the Oudh Contingent, Lieutenant Dorin selected in preference to Lieutenant Carey; recommends Lieutenant G J Bax, 48th Native Infantry, for the Adjutancy of Cavalry in the Oudh contingent. Copy of reply, the vacant Adjutancy has been filled by Lieutenant Barber; regrets that Outram has been ill.
203. March to April 1856. Letter from Mr W Lacey, Telegraph Office, Bangalore. Asks for employment under the Judicial Commissioner of Mysore. Copy of reply, refusing.
205. April 1856. Letter from Mr A H Collingwood, Calcutta. Asks for an interview. Copy of reply, asking for reason for interview.
206. April 1856. Letter from Aga Kurboli Mahomed, Turkish Consul, Calcutta. Asks to be introduced to his Lordship. Copy of reply, interview arranged.
206a. April 1856. Copy of letter to Dr Chevers, Calcutta. Thanking him for the book on medical jurisprudence in India and other works.
207. April 1856. Copy of reply to D Hay Esquire, 48th Native Infantry. His application for a military appointment has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
208. April 1856. Letter from Mr E M Potter, Radhowly, Lucknow. Asks for employment. 1 anna stamp. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not nominate uncovenanted officers. See also 323.
209. April 1856. Letter from Ram Chund Mullick, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to an earlier letter. Copy of reply, formal acknowledgement. See also 153, 6, 44.
210. April 1856. Letter from Mr G F Harvey, Officiating Commissioner of the Agra Division, Agra. Disclaims all connection with the statements that have appeared in the prints connecting his name with Indore, (cutting enclosed), and states however that he has long coveted the office now held by Sir R Hamilton. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1348.
211. April 1856. Letter from Lieutenant G F S Browne, 24th Madras Native Infantry, Deputy Commissioner 2nd class in the Saugor and Nerbudda territories, with the superintendence of the Chunderee District, Lulutpore. Asks for a transfer to the Nagpore Commission. Copy of reply, application noted; copy of earlier reply. See also 46, 113, 481.
212. April 1856. Copy of reply to Dr Sanderson, Assistant Surgeon 6th Regiment Hyderabad Contingent, Lingusoogoor. His request for a transfer has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
213. March to April 1856. Letter from General M Cubbon, Commissioner of Mysore, Nundydroag. About temporary appointments in Chittledroag Division. Copy of reply, confirming appointments.
214. April 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary, Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta. About the posting of officers to the Nagpore Commission. See also 292, 1805, 1851.
215. April 1856. Letter from Captain H Howe, Secretary, to the Superintendent of Marine, Calcutta. Complains of his supercession while on leave by Mr Sutherland. Copy of reply, the arrangement cannot be altered.
216. April 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Baker, Secretary Public Works Department, Calcutta. About Captain Wright's transfer to an appointment for the Tounghoop Road. See also 11, 53, 144.
217. April 1856. Letter from Captain R N Raikes, 67th Native Infantry, 2nd in command 1st Gwalior Cavalry, Gwalior. Asks to be appointed to the command of an Irregular Corps out of Gwalior. Copy of reply, application should be made to the Military Secretary. See also 877, 945.
218. April 1856. Letter from Colonel H. Goodwyn, Chief Engineer Public Works Department, Lower Provinces, Calcutta. Has had made a model of the dome of the Government House with Britannia and Lion Couchant, and Britannia alone; proposes to send them to the Governor General. Copy of reply, accepting. See also 114, 138, 298, 325.
219. April 1856. Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary, to the Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Reports on the memorandum from the ryots of Lunt Dwarbasoonce in the Hooghly Gillah. Copy of earlier letter to Grey, asks him to examine the petition, which vas anonymous, and mentioned torture and similar malpractices; the Governor General wished to know whether such charges were probably true, and if there was any way of punishing the offenders.

222. April 1856. Letter from Mr W J Allen, Commissioner of Chota Nagpore. Applies for the office of Governor General's Agent in Central India. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 607.
