Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 226 to 250, consisting of correspondence relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 3 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 201 to 300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 226, 231, 233a, 238, 250 have a red cross on them to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
226. April 1856. Letter from Sir J Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of the Punjab, Lahore. Has applied officially for 3 more Assistant Commissioners for the Punjab, and is about to propose a reduction in the number of officers in the Executive Works Department. Copy of reply, 3 officers appointed.
227. March to April 1856. Letter from Lieutenant E G Campbell, Adjutant, 51st Madras Native Infantry, Trichinopoly. For an Assistant Commissionership in the Punjab. Copy of reply, asking for testimonials. Also draft reply. See also 360.
228. April 1856. Letter from Mr A H Collingwood, late a patrolling officer in the Customs Department, North Western Provinces, Calcutta. Sends a petition stating the circumstances of his dismissal, and asks to be restored, or to have his case investigated. Copy of reply, documents transferred to the Home Office.
229. April 1856. Letter from Colonel H Godwyn, Chief Engineer, Calcutta. Has forwarded a model of the dome, Britannia and the Lion Couchant. See also 114, 138, 218.
230. April 1856. Letter from Mr D Eliott, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Endorsed: answered privately.
231. April 1856. Letter from Mr W G Young, Director of the Public Institute, Calcutta. Forwards a memorandum of the present state and constitution of the Medical College and Hospital, and the result of the last examination for degrees, and wishes to know when and how the Governor General will distribute the diplomas. Copy of reply, assigning a time for the distribution.
232. March to April 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J F Chapman, Quarter Master and Interpreter, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Sholapoor. Applies for civil employment. Copy of reply, application noted.
233. April 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Governor of India Foreign Department. Forwards the Durbar Account for March (no longer enclosed).
233a. April 1856. Letter from Mr F Gouldsbury, Commissioner of Rajshahye, Banleah. Forwards a printed copy of the correspondence relating to his removal from the Commissionership of Cuttack.
234. April 1856. Letter from Sir J Outram, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Submits an application from Captain Battye for extension of his leave. Copy of reply, extension not granted. 235. April 1856. Letter from Captain M J Battye, Assistant to Resident, Baroda, on leave, England. Asks for extension of his leave, with medical certificate. Copy of reply, request refused. 236. April 1856. Letter from Major S C Macpherson, 8th Madras Native Infantry, Political Agent at Gwalior. Submits a statement of his services, and observes that the official rank and emoluments of his present office are lower than those he enjoyed 11 years ago. Copy of reply, no suitable opening at present, application noted.
237. April 1856. Letter from the Superintendent of Stationery, Fort William. Forwards samples of stationery. Copy of reply about this; copy of earlier letter.
238. April 1856. Letter from Mr E B Underhill, Secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society, Calcutta. Asks Lord Canning to become Patron of Serampore College. 3 other papers about the College. Copy of reply, sending a donation of 1,000 Rupees. Draft reply also. See also 497, 652.
239. April 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J S Ross, 36th Madras Native Infantry, Executive Officer Martaban and Tounghoo Road, Calcutta. Returns thanks for his appointment as 3rd class Commissioner in the Punjab. See also 189, 192.
240. April 1856. Letter from Mr Francis Pereira, Vice Consul of Sardinia, Calcutta. Asks for an audience for the Consul General of Sardinia, Chevalier Casella, recently returned from England. Copies of 2 replies, granting interview.
241. April 1856. Letter from Mrs Mary Pinson, Calcutta to Lady Canning. Wife of a cashiered Lieutenant who cannot find a post, the family is in great distress; asks for some employment for him and relief for herself. Copy of reply, forwarding 50 Rupees.
242. April 1856. Letter from Captain Woodley, Superintendent State Yacht Establishment, Calcutta. Forwards 2 indents for the Private Secretary's signature. Endorsed: indents returned.
243. April 1856. Letter from Mr P W Le Geyt, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, interview granted.
244. April 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel P Anstruther C B, Superintendent Gun Powder Manufactory, Madras. Forwards a letter of introduction to Lord Canning (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
245. April 1856. Letter from Messrs. John Borradaile and Co. Calcutta. Asks the Governor General to give permission to the Commander of the Steam Frigate 'Zenobia' to tow down the ship 'Mystery' laying in the danger off Fisherman's Point, down the river to the Sand Head. Copy of reply, application refused.
246. April 1856. Letter from Samuel S Burby and Lydia Burby, Cuddalore. Asks for money. 1/2 anna stamp.
247. April 1856. Letter from Mr G F Cockburn, Chief Magistrate, Calcutta. Asks for 2 tickets for the Legislative Council.
248. April 1856. Letter from Captain H Hopkinson, Commissioner of Arracan, Fort William. Will wait upon his Lordship. Copy of earlier letter, asking Hopkinson to see the Governor General before he returns to Arracan.
249. April 1856. Letter from Mr W Clark, Secretary to the Municipal Commissioner Calcutta. Asks for a ticket for the Legislative Council. Endorsed: answered privately.
250. April 1856. Letter from Colonel Sir James Outram K C B, Chief Commissioner for Oudh, Lucknow. Encloses a letter to the Governor General stating that his medical advisers have insisted on his going to sea for 6 months. He hopes that a civilian of experience will be appointed in his place, now that military operations are over. Copy of reply from Private Secretary expressing sympathy; the Governor General is also writing.
