‘No. 3 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 251 to 275

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 251 to 275, consisting of correspondence relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 3 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 201 to 300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 254, 259, 265, and 270 have a red cross on them to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 261 and 264 are missing.
251. April 1856. Letter from Captain E J Hughes, 57th Native Infantry, Ferozepore. Asks for a staff appointment. Copy of reply, application transferred to the Military Secretary. See also 336.
252. April 1856. Letter from Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Lahore. Asks to be appointed Deputy Commissioner in Nagpore. Copy of reply, the vacancy is filled.
253. April 1856. Letter from Major C Davidson, Resident, Baroda. States that Lieutenant L Barton will be glad to accept a 3rd class Assistant Commissionership in Nagpore, but would prefer one in the Punjab. Endorsed: Lieutenant Barton appointed in the Punjab 17 April I856, Letter to Lieutenant Barton No 205. See also 15.
254. April to May 1856. Letter from Major G E Hollings 38th Native Infantry, Deputy Commissioner Shahpore. States his services in a memorandum, and the circumstances which led to his late troubles at Shahpore, with 2 other enclosures. Copies of replies, to Major Hollings, Mrs Hollings, and W C Hollings, the decision of the Governor General with regard to Major Hollings must stand. Governor General's Book No 19, 37. 255. March 1856. Letter from Major J W Coets, 6th Madras Native Infantry, Bangalore. Applies for some appointment in the Mysore Commission. Copy of reply, application should be made to the Chief Commissioner.
256. April 1856. Letter from the Hon. E A Blundell, Singapore. Remonstrates against the appointment of Lieutenant Hilliard to the office of Superintendent of Convicts and Executive Engineer at Penang, which he believes was brought about through the interest of Lord Harris. With 2 enclosures. Copy of reply, letter not passed to Governor General, hopes affair will not cause further trouble.
257. April 1856. Letter from Mr C H Lushington, Secretary to the Government of India Financial Department, Calcutta. Submits to the Governor General a subscription book of the Calcutta Girls' School, with a prospectus, and asks for his Lordship's support (letter only remains) Governor General's Book, No 47. See also 692, 693.
258. March to April 1856. Letter from E H C Monckton, Deputy Commissioner 3rd class, Punjab, on leave, Galle. Acknowledges receipt of letter about Mrs Marriott's case, and gives his address, Fineshade Abbey, Wansford. Copy of reply, nothing is to be done for Mrs Marriott. See also 87.
259. April 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Calcutta. Forwards Sir J Bowring's despatch on the opium question (no longer enclosed) and gives more details about Captain Battye's extension of leave for 6 months. 260. April 1856. Letter from Captain R W Bird, Calcutta. Asks for an audience before his departure from India. Copy of reply, refusing.
262. April 1856. Letter from Cabill Choudery and Cookman Choudery of Mouza, Meerooka, Calcutta. Ask for a reply to their petition forwarded a month ago.
263. April 1856. Letter from Sreenath Ghose, Calcutta. Asks for assistance Endorsed: no answer.
265. April 1856. Letter from Mr W C Hollings, Cawnpore. About his brother's case, feels he has fallen a victim to the enmity of Sir J Lawrence, and Messrs Thornton and Edmonstone, and that an enquiry would clear him. See also 155, 178, 313, 254, 354, Governor General's Book No 19, 37.
267. April 1856. Letter from Mr D Davidson, Calcutta. Asks for employment. See also 356.
268. April 1856. Letter from Captain R D Dansey, 3rd Madras Europeans, Assistant Civil Engineer, Chingleput. Asks for an appointment in Public Works Department, Mysore. Copy of reply, application should be made to the Commissioner General Cubbon.
269. April 1856. Letter from Mrs M A Rowlatt, Gowhatty, Assam. Asks for employment for her husband, Captain E A Rowlatt, 21st Native Infantry, 1st class Principal Assistant to the Commissioner of Assam, in the Punjab, Oudh, or elsewhere, where the climate is drier. Copy of reply, application noted.
270. April 1856. Letter from Major J Nicholson, Deputy Commissioner Dera Ismael Khan, Bunnoo. Feels he is no longer of any use in the Punjab, and asks for the Political Agency at Bhurtpore. Copy of reply, his application will be considered as soon as the Agency becomes vacant. See also 35, 271.
271. April 1856. Letter from Major J Nicholson, Deputy Commissioner Dera Ismael Khan, Bunnoo. In continuation of his previous letter, although he has applied for the usual Deputation to Cashmere on account of ill health, merely requires his application for a transfer from the Punjab to be complied with to restore him. See also 35, 270.
272. April 1856. Letter from Mrs M Pinson, Calcutta. Thanks Lady Canning for her donation, and asks for a position however small the salary may be, for her husband. Copy of reply, refusing. Draft reply also. See also 241.
273. April 1856. Letter from Mr T P Manuel, Teacher in the Patna High School. Asks permission to dedicate to Lord Canning his book, prospectus enclosed Two 1/2 anna stamps. Copy of reply, asking for more details. See also 335, 387.
274. April 1856. Letter from Mr W J Money, Civil Service, Berhampore. Asks to be allowed to decline the appointment of Assistant Commissioner in Oudh offered to him. Copy of reply, agreeing, but with a reproof. Also draft reply.
275. April 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant W Vincent, 49th Native Infantry, Cawnpore. Application noted.
