Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 276 to 300, consisting of correspondence relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 3 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 201 to 300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures.
Numbers 292, 289, and 299 have a red cross on them to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 281 and 290 are missing.
276. April 1856. Letter from Synd Ahmud Ali, son of the late Nawab Zuhower Jung of Chitpore, Calcutta. Asks for an audience for himself and his brother. Copy of reply, asking for more details. See also 314, 319.
277. April 1856. Letter from Mr A H Collingwood, late Assistant Patrol Custom Department, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to an earlier letter, and gives an address. Note that he could not be found before. See also 228.
278. April 1856. Copy of reply to Captain C W E Howard, Officiating Cantonment Joint Magistrate, Zhuballa. His application transferred to the Military Secretary.
279. April 1856. Letter from Mr P Moore, Peshawur. States his services and asks for an Extra Assistantship in Oudh or similar post in Bengal. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not nominate uncovenanted officers.
280. April 1856. Letter from Mr S A Von Geyer, Tellicherry. States that he is the son of the late Baron Von Geyer of the Houses of Hanover and Brunswick, asks for money. Copy of reply, refusing. See also 435.
282. April 1856. Letter from Moulvee Hafiz Neaz Ahmed, Dhurruntollah. Asks for an appointment, as Deputy Collector or Deputy Magistrate. Memorandum: this man is the Imaum or Priest attached to the Dhurrumtollah Mosque built by Prince Gholan Mohumed; he is a man of great learning and respectability. From information from the Persian Department of the Foreign Office. Copy of reply, application noted, but suitable vacancy unlikely. See also 554, 956, 5912.
283. April 1856. Letter from Dr F J Mouat, Inspector of Jails, Lower Provinces, Calcutta. Forwards for the Governor General Mr Lock's reports on Jails in Bengal, Behar and Orissa for 1854-1855, (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
284. April 1856. Letter from Captain C B Young, Civil Architect, Fort William. Forwards completion certificates for 3 pairs of panel doors which have been put in the new drawing room at the Government House, Calcutta (no longer enclosed). Endorsed: returned the bills.
285. April 1856. Letter from Captain H Yule, Calcutta. Writes about the picture of Warren Hastings. Copy of reply about this. See also 117, 118, 291.
286. April 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant J S Rawlins, Adjutant 44th Native India, Agra. Application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
287. April 1856. Letter from Mr W Gordon Young, Director of Public Instruction in Bengal, Calcutta. Encloses a report on the Vernacular Charitable School in Cornwallis Street. See also 181, 191, 287.
288. April 1856. Letter from Mr C Crichton, Secretary to the Uncovenanted Service, Family Pension Fund, Calcutta. Sends a letter and enclosure to the Governor General about the Fund. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.

297. April 1856. Letter from Mr G G Morris, Superintendent of Survey 1st or Northern Division, of the Lower Provinces, Calcutta. In favour of his brother-in-law the Hon. Captain E P R H Hastings, 32nd Native Infantry, Sub Assistant Stud Department, Seharunpore, whenever the expected retirement of Major Apperley, Deputy Superintendent Studs, may cause a vacancy. 2 letters.
298. April 1856. Letter from Colonel H Goodwin, Chief Engineer Public Works Department, Lower Provinces, Calcutta. Sends a new Britannia modelled according to Lord Canning's wishes. Copy of reply, not to be erected, let matter drop. See also 114, 138, 218, 325.
299. April 1856. Letter from Hon. J R Colvin, Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces, Naini Tal. In addition to his letter to Lord Canning about Mr C C Jackson for Chief Commissioner of Oudh, states in confidence that he would prefer Mr Currie. Copy of reply, Currie was considered, but the succession to Outram was offered to Coverley Jackson. Governor General's Book No. 55. See also 306.
300. April 1856. Letter from Captain A H Ternan, Deputy Commissioner Nursingpore. Asks for promotion in the Caugor and Nerbudda Commission, or in the Oudh Commission; has forwarded a letter of introduction from the Duke of Wellington. Copy of reply, application noted.
