Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 301 to 400, consisting of correspondence, relating to appointments to posts, requests for audiences with the Governor General, and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 4 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 301 to 400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 306, 309, 315, and 317 have a red cross on them to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 305 and 307 are missing.
301. April 1856. Letter from Messrs Pharoah and Co. Advise despatch of a copy of the Madras Almanac. 1/2 anna stamp.
302. April 1856. Letter from Ully Kurreem, Collootollah, Calcutta. Asks for an audience to present a memorandum. Copy of reply, please forward the memorandum.
303. April 1856. Letter from Mr C C Kenebel, Calcutta. Asks for Lady Canning's patronage of an entertainment in gymnastics. Copy of reply, refusing.
304. April 1856. Letter from Mr Denison, 1st class Deputy Commissioner in Oudh, Fyzabad. Has sent in his resignation, hopes it will be accepted. Copy of reply, Private Secretary will do his best for him.
306. April 1856. Letter from the Hon. J Colvin, Naini Tal. Asks to be told by telegraph if Mr Jackson should be selected as Chief Commissioner of Oudh, and suggests Mr Muir to act for Mr Jackson in the Agra Revenue Board. Copy of reply, both appointments probable. Governor General's Bundle No. 55. See also 299.
308. April 1856. Letter from Mr T Roger, Calcutta. Asks for an appointment as a writer. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of earlier reply, refusing a letter of recommendation.
309. April to May 1856. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Moulmein. Submits copies of various letters; 1) to the President of the Board of Control, on the subject of the influence the French are likely to acquire in Burma if the Burmese Embassy to France leads to a commercial treaty. 2) to the Secretary to the Honourable Court, calling attention to the memorandum of the firm of Messrs Crisp and Co., and stating that the late Governor General had wrongly alleged that the firm had traded in contraband articles during the late Burmese war, and was therefore not entitled to any compensation from the Government. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
310. April to May 1856. Letter from Monsieur H La Porte, Garrison Schoolmaster at Cannanore. Asks for some assistance. 1 anna stamp. Copy of reply, refusing.
311. April 1856. Letter from Rabbi Khaim Levi, Missionary of the German Congregation, Calcutta. Asks for an audience to deliver a letter from the German Jewish congregation of Germany and Jerusalem, with some explanation of his own. Copy of reply, to forward letter; also a draft of reply. See also 317, 332, 344.
312. April 1856. Letter from Major H M Durand, Officiating Superintendent Engineer, Calcutta. Hopes that his name will be submitted should General Outram's departure cause a vacancy. Copy of reply, Outram has left, Edmonstone was not appointed, but Coverley Jackson. Application noted. See also 341, 874, 1245.
313. April to May 1856. Letter from Major G E Hollings, 38th Native Infantry, Shahpoor. Submits copies of correspondence, and asks for a fair trial. Copy of reply, the Chief Commissioner of the Punjab will inform him of the Governor General's decision. Lord Canning regrets to find himself forced to the conclusion that Hollings' representation of his own proceedings cannot be implicitly trusted. Also draft reply. 314. April 1856. Letter from Synd Ahmed Ali, son of the late Nawab Zuhurgung, Chitpore. Replies that he has something of importance to submit to the Governor General personally. See also 276, 319.
315. March to April 1856. Letter from Major F B Wardroper, Retired Establishment, Bengal Army, Care of Messrs Grindlay and Co., Cornhill, London. Forwards a copy of his letter of Aug 1855, containing certain proposals in connection with the station of Darjeeling. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
316. April to May 1856. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Hooghly. Asks that the papers in his case may be forwarded to the Honourable Court of Directors. Copies of 4 replies, will be sent to the Honourable Court. See also 193, 179, 343, 1177, 1178.
317. May 1856. Letter from Rabbi Khaim Levi, Calcutta. Forwards the letter of the German Jewish Congregation of Germany and Jerusalem, and repeats his desire for an audience. Copy of reply, the Governor General refuses to give audience to persons who are unable to state beforehand in writing the object of their visit. See also 311, 332, 344.
318. May 1856. Letter from Mr D Calder, Howrah. Asks for a reply to a letter, would have been glad of an audience. Copy of reply, the letter required no answer. Would he state his reason for an audience in writing. Copy of an earlier reply. Governor General's Bundle No 36. See also 66l.
319. May 1856. Letter from Synd Ahmud Ali, son of the late Nawab of Chitpore. Will defer his request for an audience until later. Endorsed: no answer. See also 314, 276.
320. April 1856. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, Civil Auditor, Fort William. States the correct way to draw the Private Secretary's Salary as Judicial Commissioner of Mysore. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information.
321. April to May 1856. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General Central India, Camp Dhar. States that Major Ellis, Political Assistant in Bundlecund and Rewah is about to apply for 6 months leave, and recommends Lieutenant F J Helbert, Inspector in the Department of Public Education North West Provinces to act for Major Ellis. Copy of reply, Major Ellis' application not yet arrived. See also 358, 368, 444.
322. April to May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W Vincent, 49th Native Infantry, Cawnpore. Asks for an appointment in the Opium Department. Copy of reply, appointments in Opium Department in gift of the local authorities. Copy of further reply, July, the post of Inspector of Post Offices in Pegu is offered to Vincent. Also draft reply. Telegraph message No 18. See also 750.
323. April to May 1856. Letter from Mr E N Potter, Lucknow. Prays that justice may be done him. Part of 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, no cause shown to re-open case. See also 208.
324. May 1856. Copy of reply to Captain W W Aubert, 34th Native Infantry, Mirzapore. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
325. May 1856. Letter from Colonel H Goodwyn, Calcutta. Sends M Regaud, the Art Professor who shall endeavour to give Britannia the position required. Copy of reply about this. See also 114, 138, 218, 298.
