Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 326 to 350, consisting of correspondence, relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 4 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 301 to 400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 330, 332, 344, and 345 have a red cross on them to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
326. April to May 1856. Letter from Captain J S Philpotts, 66th Native Infantry, Rawalpindee. It would not be an advantage to him to accept a Junior Assistant Commissionership in the Punjab, but he would be glad to get a Deputy Paymastership, Pension Paymastership or Cantonment Magistracy. Endorsed: no answer. Copy of earlier letter to Philpotts, offering him position of 3rd Class Assistant Commissionership in the Punjab.
327. April to May 1856. Letter from Captain R J Edgell, 53rd Native Infantry, Cuttack. Asks for the command of the Calcutta Militia. Copy of reply, Calcutta Militia already disposed of, too many officers away from Edgell's regiment for him to be considered at present. See also 71.
328. April to May 1856. Letter from Mr C Gubbins, Civil and Sessions Judge, Allygur. Asks for Political or other employment under the Governor General. Has had the misfortune to incur the displeasure of influential persons. Copy of reply, application noted, but openings very few.
329. April to May 1856. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Sholapore. Asks to be nominated Assistant General Superintendent for the suppression of Thuggee at Belgaum for Captain Hervey, on leave Copy of reply, he is appointed while Hervey is away. See also 478.
330. May 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Calcutta. In reply, cannot quote an instance of a Board being left without a Member, but has no hesitation in saying that no inconvenience would arise from the Revenue Board at Agra being left without a Member, the Secretary could carry on the current duties; it is of much more consequence that Oudh should not be left longer without a Chief Commissioner than that Agra should be left without a Board for a few days.
331. April to May 1856. Letter from Major G Timins, 34th Native Infantry, Commanding Malwa Contingent, Mehidpore. Asks to be nominated to the Political charge of Mehidpore temporarily, in addition to his own duties, with salary adjustment. Copy of reply, the Political Agency there has been abolished.
332. May 1856. Letter from Rabbi Haim Levi, Calcutta. States that he was ill-treated by certain Jews on his arrival at their Synagogue, where he went to lay before them the object of his mission; he had no redress; a libel is in circulation; he asks for an audience, and that he may refer his case to the Supreme Court, and asks for some pecuniary aid. Copy of reply, the Rabbi must seek his remedy at law. See also 311, 317, 344.
333. April to May 1856. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General Central India, Indore. Forwards a letter from Lieutenant W G Cumming, Officiating 2nd Assistant at Indore, complaining about his salary; asks for instructions. Copy of reply about this. See also 346.
334. April to May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J R G Magrath, 1st Madras Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant Commissioner Nagpore. Asks for a permanent appointment in the Commission. Copy of reply, application noted.
335. April to May 1856. Letter from Mr T P Manuel, 2nd Assistant Teacher in the Patna High School. Forwards an impression of his work, in reply. Copy of reply, permission to dedicate to Governor General declined. Governor General will subscribe to 5 copies: also copy of another reply, returning book to the publishers. See also 273, 387.
336. April to May 1856. Letter from Captain E J Hughes, 57th Native Infantry, Ferozepore. Would like Major Apperley's position, or any other suitable. Copy of earlier reply. See also 251.
337. May 1856. Letter from Captain C B Young, Civil Architect, Fort William. Forwards for signature the completion certificate in duplicate for the Quadrennial repairs to the Government House at Calcutta. Endorsed: returned.
338. May 1856. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Officer, Barrackpore Division. Forwards certificate for the annual repairs to the road in the park at Barrackpore. See also 347.
339. May 1856. Letter from Mr William Mackintosh, Ex Major Native Infantry, Calcutta. Asks that for the reasons assigned his name may be re-entered in the Army List as a Major, and that all arrears due to him may be paid.
340. April to May 1856. Letter from Ensign W M Lane, 40 Madras Native Infantry, Commanding Detachment 2nd Regiment Nagpore Irregular Force, Chindwarrah. Returns thanks for his appointment in the Punjab Commission, would have preferred the Nagpore Irregular Force, Chindwarrah. Endorsed. No answer. Memo in the Gazette of the 3rd he is appointed as Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab.
341. April to May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant A K Comber, 18th Native Infantry, 2nd in Command, 1st Assam Light Infantry and Officiating Junior Assistant Commissioner of Assam, Debroogurh. Asks for civil employment in Oudh or the Punjab. 2 memoranda about Comber: copy of reply, he is appointed Assistant Commissioner of the 3rd class in the Punjab. See also 373, 400.
342. May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J T Smith, Mint Master, Calcutta. Will attend the Governor General on Saturday. Copy of earlier letter, asking him to see the Governor General.
343. May 1856. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Hooghly. Asks if his memoranda have been forwarded to the Honourable Court. Copy of reply, he must apply to the Home Department. Note about this. See also 179, 193, 316, 1177, 1178.
344. May 1856. Letter from Rabbi Khaim Levi, Calcutta. Withdraws his complaints; has no relief from the Jews of Calcutta, and not enough money to go to Australia, asks for aid. Copy of reply, refusing.
345. May 1856. Letter from Martin Simonsen, Spences Hotel, Calcutta. Sends a book and asks the Governor General's support for his concert. Copies of 2 replies, taking 5 single tickets, asking Mr Simonsen to call on the Private Secretary, and returning book.
346. May 1856. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, Civil Auditor, Fort William. About Lieutenant W G Cumming's allowance. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information about this officer's pay. See also 333.
347. May 1856. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Officer, Barrackpore Division. Forwards an estimate for repairing the roads in the Park at Barrackpore. 1855-1856 (no longer enclosed). See also 338.
348. April to May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant L C Barton, 1st Bombay Grenadiers Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant Resident, Baroda. Returns thanks for his appointment as 3rd class Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Copy of earlier letter appointing him.
349. May 1856. Letter from Reverend W White, Missionary, General Assembly's Institution, Calcutta. Sends a petition to Lord and Lady Canning on behalf of the Library connected with the Church of Scotland's Mission (No longer enclosed). Not dated. Endorsed: no answer.
350. May 1856. Letter from Reverend W White, Calcutta. Asks for the return of his petition.
