‘No. 4 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 351 to 375

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 351 to 375, consisting of correspondence, relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 4 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 301 to 400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures.
351. April to May 1856. Letter from Baboo Gobind Chunder Ghose, Calcutta. Asks for a recommendation. Endorsed: no address, cannot be answered. See also 540.
353. May 1856. Letter from Mr James Hume, Calcutta. About the Town Band Committee. Copy of reply about this. See also 131, 641.
354. April to May 1856. Letter from Mrs Hollings, Shahpore. Asks for her husband's case to be reconsidered. Copy of reply, a final answer has been given to Hollings. Governor General's Bundle No. 19, 37. See also 155, 178, 254, 313, 265.
356. May 1856. Letter from Mr D Davidson, Calcutta. Asks for a letter of recommendation for employment. Copy of reply, refusing. See also 267.

357a. May 1856. Copy of letter to Captain H P Lovell, Peninsular and 0riental Steam Navigation Company, Calcutta. Asking him to take some books to Lord Harris at Madras.
358. May 1856. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Agent to Governor General Central India, Indore. About Lieutenant Helbert's temporary appointment in place of Major Ellis. Also a letter from Mr Courtenay about Lieutenant Helbert. See also 321, 368, 444.
359. May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J H Jenkins, Instructor and Quarter Master, 44th Native Infantry, Agra. Renews his application for a staff appointment. 8 anna stamp. Copy of reply, he will be considered whenever there are fewer officers absent from his regiment. See also 120, 499.
360. April to May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant E G Campbell, Adjutant, 51st Madras Native Infantry, Trichinopoly. Submits a testimonial from his Commanding Officer. Copy of reply, appointing him Assistant Commissioner 3rd class, in the Punjab. See also 227.
361. May 1856. Letter from Captain A P E Elliot, 5th Light Cavalry, Assistant to the General Superintendent for the suppression of Thuggee, from Camp, Indore. Asks for the Political Agency at Mehidpore. 1 anna stamp. Copy of reply, the appointment is abolished. See also 84, 474.
362. May 1856. Copy of reply to Captain G L H Gall, Commanding 2nd Regiment of Oudh Irregular Cavalry, Lucknow. His application is transferred to the Military Secretary.
363. May 1856. Letter from Mr T N Maltby, Madras Civil Service, Madras. Accepts with thanks the office of Financial and Judicial Commissioner over the assigned districts in the Hyderabad Territory. Copy of earlier letter, offering this, a new position, to Maltby. Copy of letter to G A Bushby Esquire, Hyderabad, informing him of the new post and first appointment.
363a. May 1856. Copy of a letter to the Collector of Government Sea Customs, Calcutta. Asking for a pass for a parcel of books to Lord Harris, by the Mail Steamer Nubia. See also 357a.
364. April to May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant T C Alban, 8th Bombay Native Infantry, Camp, Baroda. Asks for employment in the Oudh, Gwalior or Hyderabad Contingent, with 4 enclosures. Copies of 2 replies, application passed to the Military Secretary, and letter appointing him Assistant to the Resident at Baroda.
365. May 1856. Letter from Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Shahpore. Renews his application for promotion. See also 294, 375, 455, 479, 659, 775, 842. Governor General's Book No. 54.
366. May 1856. Copy of reply to Mr G H Blaquiere. His letter and enclosures have been transferred to the Household ADC.
367. May 1856. Letter from Mr C J Stephen, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary. Copy of reply, arranging interview.
368. May 1856. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Governor General's Agent, Central India. Would be pleased if Governor General will allow him Lieutenant Helbert, to have a telegraphic message to this effect. Copy of reply, telegraphic message sent, Helbert may act for Major Ellis; but how is he able to carry out his educational duties at Rewah at the same time? See also 321, 358, 444.
369. May 1856. Letter from Captain C B Young, Civil Architect, Calcutta. Sends completion certificate for Quadrennial repairs to the out offices attached to the Government House, Calcutta. Endorsed: returned.
370. May 1856. Letter from Sir A Bogle, Commissioner Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, Moulmein. About Lieutenant Burn, recommends he be confirmed as 'Assistant Commissioner' only. Has written to Mr Edmonstone. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information about Burn. See also 198.
371. May 1856. Letter from Assistant Surgeon C Lowdell, 2nd Oudh Local Infantry, Seetapore, Oudh. Applies for the civil medical appointment in the district of Seetapore.
372. May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant H P Wynch, Adjutant, Calcutta Militia, Alipore, Asks to be appointed Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab. See also 423.
373. May 1856. Letter from Major L H Hamilton, Private Secretary, to the Lieutenant Governor, from Alipore. Asks for the position of Junior Assistant Commissionership to be filled in Assam, and suggests Lieutenant Comber of 52nd Native Infantry. Copy of reply, Lieutenant Comber has already been appointed to the Punjab; copy 2 other letters, Comber's appointment to the Punjab was refused by the military Department, so he is appointed to Assam. 374. May 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant T Pierce, 30th Native Infantry, Agra. Acknowledging his application for employment.
375. May 1856. Letter from Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Shahpore. Acknowledges receipt of letter, and is grateful for the Governor General's considerate view. Copy of Telegraphic Message, Fraser understands Hollings is leaving the Punjab, thus a vacancy. Copies of replies, Fraser should apply to the Chief Commissioner for Hollings' vacancy. Governor General's Book No. 54. See also 294, 365, 375, 455.
