Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 377 to 400, consisting of correspondence, relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 4 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 301 to 400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Number 389 has a red cross on it, to indicate that it ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 376, 378, 381, and 383 are missing.
377. May 1856. Copy of reply to Moulvee Ully Kurreem, Calcutta. Memoranda transferred to the Secretary to Government, Home Department.
379. April to May 1856. Letter from 2nd Lieutenant W R D Sewell, Madras Horse Brigade Artillery, Secunderabad. Asks for an appointment in the Mysore Commission. Copy of reply, application should be made to the Commissioner.
380. May 1856. Copy of reply to Mr Francis Dale, Chunar. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
382. May 1856. Letter from Martin Simonsen, Calcutta. Asks for the Governor General's patronage for his next concert. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has been unable to see Governor General, so returns subscription book.
384. May 1856. Letter from Mr J Rennie, Calcutta. Forwards an application from his brother, Captain J Rennie, for the post of Officiating Superintendent of Marine. Copy of reply, no vacancy at the moment. See also 385.
385. May 1856. Letter from Captain J Rennie, Commander of the Honourable Company's Steamer 'Feroze', Bombay. Applies to be Acting Superintendent of Marine. Copies of 2 replies, there will only be a vacancy for 3 weeks, and it will not be filled by an Acting Superintendent. See also 384.
386. May 1856. Letter from Capt J H Wright, 1st Madras Native Infantry, 2nd Assistant Civil Engineer, Palkondah near Chicacole. Returns thanks for his appointment with the Tounghoop Road.
387. May 1856. Letter from Mr T P Manuel, Patna School. Solicits patronage for his forthcoming book. 1/2 anna stamp. Endorsed: no answer. See also 273, 335.
388. May 1856. Letter from Mr J Crawford, Retired Conductor, Public Works Department, Calcutta. Asks for an audience so that he may plead his case personally. Copy of reply, audience refused, no reason apparent for re-opening case. See also 432, 466, 1142, 1172, 1184, 1278, 1520.
389. March 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J T Smith, Mint Master, Calcutta. About rates for melting gold, silver etc.
390. May 1856. Letter from Mr P J Cockburn, Deputy Collector of Government Sea Customs, Calcutta. States that he has been requested by M Rigaud to say he has been ill, but will now proceed with the model.
391. May 1856. Letter from Mr T Oldham, Geological Surveyor, Calcutta. Will wait upon Lord Canning. Copy of earlier letter, asking Oldham to see the Governor General.
392. May 1856. Letter from Mr G P Cockburn, Chief Magistrate, Calcutta. Asks for a ticket of admission to the Legislative Council.
394. May 1856. Letter from Captain D Tapley, Assistant Protector of Emigrants, 3rd Assistant Master Attendant, Calcutta. Applies for the office of Registrar of Seamen for the Port of Calcutta, with testimonial. Copy of reply, his name will be submitted to the Governor General. See also 3992.
395. May 1856. Letter from Mr H Riddington, Calcutta. Asks for the appointment of Acting Superintendent of Marine or of Master Attendant. Copy of reply, vacancy only temporary. See also 72.
396. May 1856. Letter from Messrs Le Page and Co, Calcutta. Forward some catalogues. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
397. May 1856. Letter from Aga Kurboli Mahomed, Calcutta. Asks permission to visit His Highness Newab Manobar Wood Dowlah who has arrived at Calcutta with the ex-king of Lucknow. Copy of reply, it is in accordance with the wishes of the Governor General that the ex-King of Oudh should receive every mark of attention and respect from His Majesty's friends and from the friends of his family. Note for reply by Lord Canning. See also 410.
398. May to June 1856. Letter from the Hon. D Eliott, Member of the Legislative Council Calcutta. Recommends Ensign Eustace Hill, 3rd Madras Native Infantry, for civil employment, preferably in the Hyderabad Ceded districts. Copy of reply, he is nominated to an Assistantship in the Punjab.
399. May 1856. Letter from Mr J Hume, Calcutta. Asks whether Herr Weddes' Band could not be engaged for the Queen's Birthday Ball. Endorsed: answered privately.
400. May 1856. Letter from Major L H Hamilton, Private Secretary, Alipore. About Lieutenant Comber. Copy of reply, Comber will remain in Assam. See also 373, 341.
