Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 401 to 425, consisting of correspondence, relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 5 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 401 to 500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures.
401. May 1856. Letter from Mr T H Lord, Calcutta. Asks to be appointed Registrar of Seamen. Copy of reply, his name will be put forward.
402. May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant H G Raverty, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner Mooltan. Asks to be transferred from the Punjab to the Oudh Commission. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 10.
403. May 1856. Letter from Mr G J Simmons, Calcutta. Asks to be appointed Registrar of Seamen. Copy of reply, his name will be put forward.
404. May 1856. Letter from Mr H H Sevenoaks, the Honourable Company's Steamer 'Thames', Calcutta. Asks for employment in the Marine Department, on shore. States his services, testimonials. Copy of reply, his name will be put forward.
405. May 1856. Letter from Monsieur B Rigaud, Calcutta. Offers his services for the decorations of the Queen's Birthday Ball; on account of ill health, has not yet completed the model. Copy of reply, no assistance necessary with decorations, model awaited.
406. May 1856. Letter from Reverend John Milne, Calcutta. Acknowledges with thanks Lady Canning's donation to the Moorghyhatta School. Copy of earlier letter sending donation.
407. May 1856. Letter from Mr C Burbank, Commanding, the Honourable Company's Steamer 'Fire Queen', Calcutta. Applies for the appointment of Registrar of Seamen, states his services. Copy of reply, his name will be put forward.
408. May 1856. Letter from Mr C R Smith, Officiating Registrar of Seamen, Calcutta. Applies for the permanent appointment. Copy of reply, his name will be put forward.
409. May 1856. Letter from Mr D H Barker, Chief Officer, the Honourable Company's Steamer 'Shoe Gong'. Applies for the appointment of Registrar of Seamen, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, his name will be put forward.
410. May 1856. Letter from Aga Kurboli Mahomed, Calcutta. Asks for an audience to communicate part of the conversation between him and the Nawab Manobar Wood Dowlah, Minister of the ex-King of Oudh. Copy of reply, refusing, as the Turkish Consul is not the proper channel through which communication from the King.
411. May 1856. Letter from Mr R Lloyd, Head Uncovenanted Assistant to the Accountant to the Government of Bengal. Applies for the appointment of Registrar of Seamen. Copy of reply, his name will be put forward.
412. May 1856. Letter from H M Cannon Esquire, Inspector of Prisons in the Punjab. Asks to be appointed Residency Surgeon at Indore, with testimonials. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 600, 959
413. May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant C Reay, Instructor and Quarter Master, 32nd Native Infantry, Goruckpore. Forwards a letter from Lord Henry Scott and asks for staff employment. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Endorsed: This application to be included in the new list of officers highly recommended. Governor General's Bundle No. 156.
414. May 1856. Copy of reply to Mr W Krefting, Saugor. His letter transferred to the Home department.
415. May 1856. Letter from Mr C S Hogg, Administrator General, Calcutta. Writes that he has heard from Dr J J Clarke Assistant Surgeon Humeerpore, that he had sent in his application for the medical charge of the Body Guard.
416. May 1856. Letter from Major T Eyre, 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry, Pay Master Northern Division, Ahmedabad. Applies for a political appointment. Copy of reply, application noted.
417. May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant F Gardiner Indian Navy, the Honourable Company's Steamer 'Zenobia', Kidderpore. Applies for the office of Registrar of Seamen.
418. May 1856. Letter from Mr H B Weston, Naval Store Keeper, Kidderpore. Applies for the office of Registrar of Seamen.
419. May 1856. Letter from M Carboni Raffaello, Calcutta. Asks for a deck passage to Suez on the next mail steamer. Copy of reply, refusing.
420. May 1856. Letter from Mr James Hume Calcutta. Sends 2 numbers of a new series of 'The Indian Sporting Review', and asks if Governor General will become a subscriber. Copy of reply, accepting.
422. May 1856. Baboo Shib Chunder Mittre, Howrah. Asks for employment. Copy of reply, refusing.
423. May 1856. Letter from Dr P J Mouat M D, Inspector of Prisoners, Lower Provinces, Alipore. In support of Lieutenant H P Wynch, 59th Native Infantry and Adjutant Calcutta Native Militia, who has applied for civil employment. See also 372.
424. May 1856. Letter from Baboo Praunauth Bose, Assistant in the office of the Director of Public Instructions Office, Calcutta. Asks for an appointment, in Oudh.
