Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 426-449, consisting of correspondence, relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 5 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 401 to 500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Number 431 has a red cross on it, to indicate that it ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 450 is missing.
426. May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J A Steel, 17th Native Infantry, Hashungobad. Returns thanks for his appointment as 2nd class Assistant Commissioner in Oudh. Copy of earlier letter, announcing this appointment. Also copy of reply to Moonshee Jankee Persaud, Calcutta, 4 July, that his petition has been transferred to the Foreign Department.
427. May 1856. Copy of reply to Captain J D Dale, 40th Madras Native Infantry, Kamptee. Acknowledging his letter asking for employment.
428. May 1856. Letter from Baboo Ram Chund Mullick, Calcutta. Offers himself as a candidate for either of 2 vacancies in the Government House Establishment. Copy of earlier reply.
429. May 1856. Letter from Captain R Gordon, 4th Bombay Native Infantry Assistant Commissioner Punjab, Calcutta. About to go on sick leave which is limited to 15 months by a new rule; asks that his sick leave may be extended to 2 years. Copy of reply, refusing.
430. May 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Goodwyn, Calcutta. Acknowledging receipt of letter, saying that the Governor General will visit the School of Industry and Art. Copy of earlier letter, suggesting the visit.
431. May 1856. Letter from Sir John Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of the Punjab, Murree. In reply, states that he has not a list of the Executive Officers who have been recommended to be reduced, but he will send a copy and intimate if any are likely to be fit for civil employment Most of the number are Queen's officers who are only eligible.
432. May 1856. Letter from Mr J Crawford, Retired Conductor Public Works Department, Calcutta. Renews his application to have his case re-opened. Copy of reply, refusing. See also 388, 466, 1142, 1172, 1184, 1278.
433. May 1856. Letter from Mr T Oldham, Bengal Club, Calcutta. Sends papers drawn up at the Governor General's request (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
434. May 1856. Letter from Mr P Gouldsbury, Commissioner of Rajshahye, Darjeeling. Forwards a copy of his letter to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal for employment, in the Sudder Court, with testimonials, Copy of reply, application will be dealt with by Lieutenant Governor.
435. May 1856. Letter from Mr S A Von Geyer, Tellicherry. Submits his credentials and hopes that the Governor General will assist him. Copy of reply, refusing. See also 280.
436. May 1856. Copy of reply to Dr R B Kinsey, 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers, Subathoo. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
437. May 1856. Letter from Mr T Mullins, Chandernagore. Asks for a letter of recommendation, and has sent separately a Memorial addressed to the officers of the Bengal Army. Copy of reply, letter of recommendation declined.
438. May 1856. Letter from Reverend Dr T Olliffe, D D, Bishop and Vicar Apostolic Catholic Cathedral, Calcutta. Asks for an audience. Copy of reply, audience granted.
439. May 1856. Letter from Mr G S Pagan, Calcutta. Asks to be appointed Registrar of Seamen. Copy of reply, his name will be put forward.
440. May 1856. Letter from Mr B C Bailey, Inspector in charge, Electric Telegraph Office, Calcutta. Forwards a bill for service messages sent in April (no longer enclosed).
441. May 1856. Letter from Mr G O'Donnell, Officiating Deputy Superintendent Electric Telegraph Calcutta. Forwards bills for telegraph messages sent in January, February, and March, (no longer enclosed).
442. May 1856. Letter from Mr J Hawell, Ahmedpore, Bhawulpore. Asks to be appointed Native Agent at Bhawulpore in the event of a vacancy. Copy of reply, application noted.
443. May 1856. Letter from Mr G Cook, Secretary Bombay Auxiliary Bible Society, Bombay. Sends 4 copies of the Annual Report 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
444. May 1856. Letter from R N C Hamilton, Governor General's Agent, Central India, Indore. Explains how Lieutenant Herbert's appointment as Political Agent temporarily will not interfere with his educational duties. Also a letter from the Honourable J Colvin on the subject. See also 321, 358, 368.
445. May 1856. Letter from Baboo Praunnauth Bose, Assistant in the office of Director of Public Instructions, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to his application for an appointment in Oudh. See also 78, 151, 156, 157, 158, 424.
446. May 1856. Letter from Major C Davidson, Resident at Baroda. About the appointment of Lieutenant Alban, 8th Bombay Native Infantry, as Officiating Assistant Resident at Baroda in place of Lieutenant Barton. Copy of reply, Alban is posted.
447. May 1856. Letter from Mr A Grote, Senior Secretary, to the Board of Revenue, Alipore. In support of Captain H C Gardner's application for employment in Oudh (of 38th Native Infantry) Copy of reply, he should apply himself. Also later reply, Gardner's application transferred to Military Secretary. See also 513.
448. May 1856. Copy of reply to Moonshee Abdool Allee, Calcutta. His petition has been transferred to the office of Secretary to the Government of Bengal.
449. May 1856. Letter from Reverend P E Lord Gordon, Coonoor. A foolish tale. See also 221.
