Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 451 to 475, consisting of correspondence, relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 5 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 401 to 500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 459, 461, 468, and 469 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 466 and 467 are missing.

452. June 1856. Letter from Captain H Yule, Under Secretary Public Works Department Calcutta. About the portrait of Warren Hastings.
453. June 1856. Copy of reply to Captain A F Wylly, 9th Light Cavalry. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
454. June 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant K D J Campbell, 29th Native Infantry, Jullundur. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
455. May to June 1856. Letter from Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry. Deputy Commissioner Punjab, Shahpore. About an appointment. Copies of 2 replies, appointment will be made by Chief Commissioner. See also 94, 365, 375, 479.
456. June 1856. Letter from Messrs. Lepage and Co. Calcutta. Forward the 6th number of the 'Indian Annals of Medical Science'. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
457. May to June 1856. Letter from Mr E B Godfrey, Head Master, Government School, Arrah. Asks for an uncovenanted appointment in Oudh, copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not nominate uncovenanted officers.
458. June 1856. Letter from the Hon. J A Dorin, Calcutta. Encloses a letter from Major Phayre about M D'Orgoni (no longer enclosed).
459. May to June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant R Stewart, 22nd Native Infantry, Commandant of the Kookee Levy at Cachar. Sends notes on the country and inhabitants of Northern Cachar for the Governor General. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
460. May to June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant C L Richardson 58th Native Infantry, Rawalpindee. Asks for a staff appointment, either in the Punjab, Oudh, or any other Commission. 1/2 anna stamp, 1 anna stamp. Copy of reply, application noted.
461. April to June 1856. Letter from Captain H Johnson, Honourable East India Company's Agent, Alexandria. Has sent the coffee bags by the Peninsular and Oriental Company's steamer. The Pacha of Egypt changed his mind about going to Aden, and requested that the Sherriff of Mecca might be accommodated with a passage to Jeddah. His Highness expects to be favoured with the use of the steamer ‘Feroze’ in July next.
462. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J T Smith, Calcutta. Will deliver money from Lord Canning to Captain Johnson. See also 1000, 461, 504.
463. May to June 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary, Government of India, Foreign Department. Forwards Durbar Account for April. Copy of reply, returning this.
464. June 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant J H Graves, Adjutant 41st Native Infantry, Seetapore, Oudh. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
465. May to June 1856. Letter from Mr G A Bushby, Resident, Hyderabad. Supports Sir Richmond Shakespear's application for promotion in the Political Department. Copy of reply, he has made no application and there are no vacancies at present. Governor General's Book No. 253. See also 515, 1152.
468. May to June 1856. Letter from Sir J Lawrence K C B, Chief Commissioner of the Punjab, Murree. Submits with remarks a list of officers of Public Works Department recommended to be transferred elsewhere. Copy of earlier letter, asking for the list. See also 431.
469. May to June 1856. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Governor General's Agent, Central India, Indore. Thanks the Governor General on behalf of Major Stockley for his appointment, also for Lieutenant Hutchinson. The receipts on account of Opium Passes are good, very nearly a crore.
470. June 1856. Letter from the Hon. D Eliott, Member of the Legislative Council, Calcutta. Communicates Mr B Hill's thanks for his appointment. See also 398.
471. June 1856. Letter from Mr T Oldham, Calcutta. Answers the Governor General's questions about the Geological Survey. Copy of earlier letter, asking for this information.
472. March 1856. Letter from the Duke of Buccleuch. Recommends Ensign W W Hume, 11th Native Infantry (cover only).
473. May to June 1856. Letter from Mr J Campbell, Assistant Revenue Surveyor, Jubbalpoor. States his services, and asks for an appointment in the Military Police Corps, about to be formed, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, appointments not in the gift of the Governor General.
474. May to June 1856. Letter from Captain A P C Elliot, 5th Light Cavalry, Assistant to the General Superintendent for the suppression of Thuggee, Indore, Mhow. Applies for a position. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 82, 361.
475. May to June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant C R Clemons, 3rd Madras European Regiment, Madras. Applies for an appointment in the Oudh or Nagpore Commissions. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 643, 1480.
