‘No. 5 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 476 to 500

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 476 to 500, consisting of correspondence, relating to appointments to posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 5 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 401 to 500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Number 492 has a red cross on it, to indicate that it ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

478. May to June 1856. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Sholapore. Returns thanks for his appointment as Officiating General Superintendent of Thuggee and Dacoity at Belgaum. Copy of reply about this. See also 329.
479. May to June 1856. Letter from Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry, Deputy Commissioner in the Punjab, Shahpore. Asks for promotion outside the Punjab, 1 enclosure. Copy of reply, application noted. Governor General's Book No. 54. See also 294, 365, 375, 455.
480. June 1856. Letter from Reverend W J Parker, Principal Secretary, Lawrence Military Asylum, Senawur near Kussowlee. Submits 7th annual Report, and asks Governor General to become a patron. Copy of reply, accepting. See also 573, 645.
481. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant G F S Browne, 24th Madras Native Infantry, Deputy Commissioner, 2nd class, in the Saugor and Nerbudda territories with the superintendence of the Chunderee district, Lulutpore. Asks for a reply to his letter of 3rd April. Copy of reply, letters acknowledged, application noted. See also 46, 113, 211.
482. May to June 1856. Letter from Mr W Edwards, Civil Service, Nainee Tal, States his services and asks for a suitable appointment in the Secretariat or Political Departments. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 2804.
483. February to June 1856. Letter from Mr W H Clarke, Doctor of Laws, late of Queen's college, Cambridge, and acting District Judge of Galle, Colombo. With 3 enclosures, asks to be appointed an inspector of schools.
484. May to July 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J Fullerton, 16th Native Infantry, Adjutant 3rd Gwalior Contingent, Gwalior. Asks for a civil appointment in Oudh. Note from Dr Leckie, Copy of Reply, application noted. See also 485, 738, 1852.
485. June 1856. Letter from Dr J Leckie, Surgeon to the Governor General Calcutta. Supports the application of Lieutenant J Fullerton, 16th Native Infantry, and Adjutant 3rd Gwalior Contingent for a civil appointment in Oudh. Note from Dr Leckie, Copy of reply, application noted. See also 485, 738, 1852.
486. June 1856. Letter from Shaik Abdullah, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary. Copy of reply, communicate reasons in writing.
487. May to June 1856. Letter from Mr G Bushby, Resident at Hyderabad, Boloram. In reply about Lieutenant H G C Finlay, 12th Madras Native Infantry and Officiating 2nd class Assistant Commissioner, Hyderabad. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information. See also 293, 717, 826, 1673.
488. June 1856. Letter from Inspector in charge of the Electric Telegraph Office, Calcutta. Forwards a bill for service messages sent in May (no longer enclosed).
489. June 1856. Letter from Cowar Kalli Kishun Roy, Calcutta. Asks to be appointed Assistant Commissioner in Oudh and sends copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, apply to Mr Jackson.
490. May to June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant T J H Keyes, 17th Madras Native Infantry, 2nd Assistant Civil Engineer, Public Works Department, Ootacamund. Returns thanks for his appointment as Assistant Commissioner 3rd class in the Punjab.
491. June 1856. Letter from Dr J Rose, Civil Surgeon, Penang. Asks to be appointed Senior Surgeon in Penang, with testimonials. Copy of reply, application noted, position not yet vacant.
492. May to June 1856. Letter from Mr M Gubbins, Judicial Commissioner, Lucknow. Submits an explanation in support of his public application for the removal of part of the censure passed upon him in connection with the selection of extra Assistants for Oudh, and refers to his anomalous position as Financial Commissioner. Copy of reply.
493. June 1856. Letter from Mrs M Stewart, Chowringhee. Asks for a staff appointment, for her son, Lieutenant A M Stewart, 64th Native Infantry. Copy of reply, application noted.
494. June 1856. Letter from Mr C J Stephens, Extra Assistant in the Punjab, Lahore. Asks for the return of certificates. Memorandum about this, Copy of reply, the certificates were sent to Sir John Lawrence, to whom he should apply.
495. June 1856. Letter from Mr H Piddington, Calcutta. Forwards a pamphlet for the Governor General (no longer enclosed) Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
496. June 1856. Letter from Reverend Dr Duff, Calcutta. Forwards a packet for the Governor General. Copy of reply, acknowledgement, and asking Dr Duff to call on the Governor General.
496a. June 1856. Letter from Copy of a letter to the Mint Master, Fort William. Asking him to cause certain weights to be prepared for the Private Secretary's office.
497. June 1856. Letter from Mr E B Underhill, Secretary, of the Baptist Missionary Society, Calcutta, Serampore. Thanks Lord Canning for his donation to the Serampore College. See also 238, 652.
498. June 1856. Letter from Mr C R Dove, Deputy Post Master General, Calcutta. In reply states that no unnecessary delay takes place in the delivery of the Governor General's letters, but the fault lies with the London Post Office, which forwards letters intended for all parts of India mixed up with the letters for Calcutta.
499. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J H Jenkins, Inspector and Quarter Master, 44th Native Infantry. Asks for reconsideration of his application for a staff appointment. Two 1/2 anna stamps, Copy of reply, situation unchanged. See also 120, 359, 1005.
