Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 501 to 525, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 6 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 501 to 600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 505, 508 and 520 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 509 and 513 are missing.
501. June 1856. Letter from Mrs E A Evans, Calcutta. Asks for money. Copy of reply, sending 100 Rupees. Copy of letter to Dr Vos M D, Hon. Secretary District Charitable Society, asking for particulars about Mrs Evans. See also 517.
502. June 1856. Letter from Mrs Dora Lilly, Sehore. Asks for advancement for her husband Lieutenant A C Lilly, Adjutant Bhopal Contingent. Copy of reply, application noted.
503. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J T Smith, Calcutta. Has been delayed in Calcutta on account of the pressure on the Mint, and asks for extension of his leave. Copy of reply, apply later, towards end of leave.
504. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J T Smith, Calcutta. Acknowledges Private Secretary's note enclosing note for Captain Johnstone, Alexandria. See also 461, 462, 1000.
505. June 1856. Letter from Mr G P Brown, Bhagulpore. Forwards for the Governor General a copy of his letter to the Secretary of The Government of India, Home Department with copies of correspondence, despatched etc. asking to be reinstated as Commissioner of the 12th or Bhagulpore Division, from which he was removed for his proceedings with regard to the Sontal rebellion. Copy of reply, documents will be considered in the Home Department.
506. June 1856. Copy of reply to Alfred Fitz Hugh Esquire. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
507. June 1856. Letter from Dr A Paton, Surgeon, 8th Light Cavalry, Mecan Meer. Applies for the post of Apothecary to the East India Company in the event of a vacancy. Copy of reply, application noted.
507a. June 1856. Copy of letter to C H Lushington Esquire. Transferring a letter from Mr Cobb with a bill for 3,000 Rupees received by the overland mail.
508. June 1856. Letter from Dr G Buist, Editor of the 'Bombay Times'. Has a conversational knowledge of Hindustani only (in reply). Also memorandum about Dr Buist. See also 94.
510. June 1856. Letter from Mr Thomas Jones, Superintendent of the 'Calcutta Gazette' Office. Sends a copy of the 'Bengal Directory'. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
511. June 1856. Letter from Mr H Piddington, Coroner of Calcutta. Asks for a seat in the Calcutta Magistracy, Copy of reply, no vacancy, application noted.
512. June 1856. Letter from Mr V O Freeman, Nagpore. Asks for an uncovenanted appointment in the Hyderabad or Nagpore Commissions. Copy of reply, Governor General does not nominate uncovenanted officers.
514. June 1856. Letter from Captain C B Young, Civil Architect, Calcutta. Forwards the estimate for white-washing, sand rubbing, painting and repairing the Governor General's stable (no longer enclosed).
515. June 1856. Letter from Colonel Sir Richmond Shakespear, Political Agent, Jodhpore. Offers himself as a candidate for the acting appointment while Sir H Lawrence goes home on leave. States his services. Copy of reply, application will be considered if Sir H Lawrence applies to go on leave. Also draft reply Governor General's book No. 253. See also 465, 1152.
516. June 1856. Letter from Mr P Gomes, Calcutta. Asks for money. 2 petitions. Copy of reply, sending 50 Rupees. Letter from 'The Englishman' office about Gomes. See also 539, 706.
517. June 1856. Letter from Dr J Gregory Vos, Honorary Secretary District Charitable Society, Calcutta. Replies about Mrs Evans, widow of Captain Evans late of Her Majesty's 17th Regiment. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information. See also 501.
518. June 1856. Letter from Captain J H Wright, Executive Officer, Pegu. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary.
518a. June 1856. Copy of letter to the Admiralty Mail Agent on board the Peninsular and Oriental Company Steamer 'Bengal'. Asks him to post the accompanying letters at Madras.
519. June 1856. Letter from Baboo Bhuggobutty Chum Chattergee, Editor of 'The Chundreia', Calcutta. Forwards a pamphlet on the marriage of Hindu widows. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
520. June 1856. Letter from Mr W C Rollings, Cawnpore. Asks for some appointment for his brother Major Hollings. Copy of reply, no excuses will be accepted for Major Hollings. See also 155, 178, 254, 313, 354 265. Governor General's book No. 19, 37.
521. June 1856. Letter from Mr W G Young, Inspector of Public Instruction, Calcutta. States that the Government aided Vernacular School at Bali is worthy of every support. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information. See also 522.
522. June 1856. Letter from Chundychurn Singha, Bali. Asks for subscription to the Government aided Vernacular School at Bali. 2 other notes about this. Copy of reply, sending 50 Rupees. See also 521.
523. June 1856. Letter from the Honourable E Drummond, Accountant General, Calcutta. About obtaining a draft on Landour or Mussooree for 500 Rupees in favour of Lieutenant Osborne Campbell of the Invalid Establishment. Copy of reply about this.
