Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 527 to 550, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 6 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 501 to 600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 528 and 529 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 526 is missing.
527. June 1856. Letter from Mrs E A Evans, Calcutta. Returns thanks for the Governor General's donation of 100 Rupees. See also 501, 517.
528. June 1856. Letter from Major G E Hollings, 38th Native Infantry, Lahore. Has made over the charge of Shahpore to Mr G Ouseley, was disappointed he had no chance of disproving his accusers, Lord Canning's expression of distrust caused him more pain than the loss of his appointment. Governor General's book No. 19, 37. See also 155, 178, 254, 265, 313, 354, 520.
529. June 1856. Letter from Mr H Ricketts, Commissioner for the revision of Civil Establishments, Nainee Tal. Has asked the Financial Secretary to discover more precisely how far his enquiries should go. Copy of reply, final decision not known, will probably be in accordance with Ricketts' views. Some remarks on the Oudh and Punjab establishment systems.
530. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant L C Barton, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab. Has been informed that Captain Battye, the present Assistant Resident at Baroda, will not return from sick leave in England, and offers himself as candidate. Copy of reply, application noted. 531. June 1856. Letter from Moonshee Syed Hoosain, Editor of the 'Taleemool Aklhar' newspaper, Narasingapooram. Sends a copy of this Hindustani newspaper, and asks the Governor General to subscribe. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, refusing.
532. June 1856. Letter from Mr S Wauchope, Officiating Junior Secretary to the Board of Revenue, Calcutta. Accepts the office of Acting Chief Magistrate of Calcutta, and states the circumstances which led him to hesitate a moment. Copy of letter to Major L H Hamilton, about this appointment. See also 167, 170.
533. June 1856. Letter from Mr T Carmichael, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces, Nainee Tal. Forwards a Persian letter to the Governor General sent to the Lieutenant Governor by mistake. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
533a. June 1856. Copy of a letter to Captain Twynan, Agent to the Peninsular and Oriental Company, Point de Galle. Asking him to deliver a letter to the Honourable Gerald Talbot, as soon as the steamer in which he left England on 4 June arrives.
534. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant, M Hunter, 18th Native Infantry, Bareilly. Asks for staff employment. Copy of reply, application noted, at present 7 officers absent from his regiment.
535. June 1856. Letter from Dr G R Ferris, Surgeon, late attached to the Honourable Company's Steamer 'Tenasserim', Calcutta. Asks for an interview on the subject of his summary dismissal without reference to the Government. Copies of papers. Copy of reply, no interview necessary, orders of Government will be communicated to him.
536. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Osborne Campbell, Invalid Establishment, Landour. Asks for a reply to an earlier letter: encloses receipt for posted letter. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not interfere in the disagreement between Campbell and the Post Master General. See also 523. Governor General's Book No 104, 18.
537. June 1856. Letter from Captain H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. About Lieutenant Pearson, H A, Meerut, Lieutenant Vaurenen, 71st Native Infantry, and Lieutenant Macfarlane of the Artillery. Also two papers about Pearson. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information on the applicants for the Bhurtpore Survey Assistantship. Also copy of letter, appointing Lieutenant A D Vaurenen. See also 538, 875, 1725.
538. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel W E Baker, Secretary to the Government of India, Public Works Department Calcutta. Replies about Lieutenant A D Vaurenen, 17th Native Infantry. Copy of earlier letter, asking if Lieutenant Vaurenen is available.
539. June 1856. Letter from Mr Peter Gomes, Calcutta. Acknowledges the receipt of 50 Rupees from the Governor General. See also 516.
540. June 1856. Letter from Baboo Gobind Chunder Ghose, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to his petition. See also 351.
541. June 1856. Letter from Mr Peter Gomes, Calcutta. Asks for an appointment in a Printing Department. Copy of reply, such posts not distributed by the Governor General.
542. June 1856. Letter from Mr D Christian, Burrisaul. Asks for employment where there is some hope of promotion, with testimonials. Copy of reply, applications for uncovenanted appointments should be addressed to the local authorities.
543. June 1856. Letter from Dr J B King M D, Assistant Surgeon, Calcutta. Applies for a vacancy when it should occur in Penang. Copy of reply, application noted.
544. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel C Chester, Adjutant General of the Army, Calcutta. Will wait upon the Governor General as requested.
545. June 1856. Letter from Captain E H Power, 7th Madras Light Cavalry, Deputy Judge Advocate General, Nagpore Force, Kamptee. Sends papers to justify his conduct (papers not enclosed). See also 549, 1158, 1859a.
546. June 1856. Letter from Dr J B Scriven, 2nd Assistant Surgeon, General Hospital, Calcutta. Asks for the medical charge of the Mysore Princes. Copy of reply, request noted.
