Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 551 to 574, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 6 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 501 to 600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 558, 561 and 573 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 568 and 575 are missing.
551. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant G R P Barlow, 50th Native Infantry, 2nd in command, 9th Oudh Regiment Camp, Seetapoor. Asks for a political appointment. Copy of reply, application noted.
552. June 1856. Letter from Captain J C Haughton, 54th Native Infantry, Magistrate of Moulmein. Asks for the post of Deputy Commissioner, Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, when vacant. Copy of reply, application noted when such a vacancy occurs.
553. June 1856. Letter from Sir A Bogle, Commissioner of Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, Moulmein. About appointments, recommends Mr Horton as new Collector of Customs at Moulmein, and Mr Baker to succeed Mr Horton as Master Attendant of Moulmein. Copy of reply, Mr Twemlow is appointed as Collector of Customs. Also letter from Mr Edmonstone.
554. June 1856. Letter from Moulvee Hafiz Near, Ahmed Mhan, Dhurrumtollah. Repeats his application for a vacancy. Copy of reply, application should be made to the Chief Commissioner. See also 282, 956, 5912.
555. June 1856. Letter from Mr T Carmichael, Nainee Tal. Forwards a Persian letter which had been sent to the Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces, by mistake. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
556. June 1856. Letter from Major J H Bell, Officiating Mint Master, Fort William. Forwards a set of weights from a quarter-ounce to six ounces. Copy of earlier letter asking for the weights.
557. June 1856. Letter from Baboo Govin Chunder Datt, Head Assistant, Loan Office, Calcutta. Asks for the post of Officiating 2nd Assistant Accountant General, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, application noted.
558. April to July 1856. Letter from Lord W Hay, Superintendent of Hill States, Simla. Has sent 7 Chuddurs and 1 Pushmeena for Lady Canning, cost 150 Rupees, and will be glad to execute further commissions. Copy of reply, earlier letter to Lord Hay, asking for these. Also copy of earlier letter of thanks and acknowledgement. Receipt for letter to Hay.
559. June 1856. Letter from the Reverend Dr A Duff, Calcutta. Forwards a letter to the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
560. June 1856. Copy of reply to Captain C H Nicholette, 1st Light Cavalry, on leave, Mussoorie. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
561. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Abbott, Gun-powder Agent, Ishapore. Sends a copy of his Journal of Travels to Khiva and Russia for the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
562. June 1856. Letter from Mr S A Von Geyer, Tellicherry. Asks that the Private Secretary may give him some pecuniary assistance.
563. June 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W F B Laurie, Madras Artillery, Ootacamund. Asks for political employment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 672.
564. June 1856. Letter from Captain E Dansey, 1st Bombay European Fusiliers, Kurachee. Applies for civil employment in the Punjab, states his services, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, application noted.
565. June 1856. Letter from the Reverend E Kincaird, Calcutta. In reply, will wait on the Governor General. Copy of earlier letter, asking him to call.
566. June 1856. Copy of reply to Captain P A Robertson, 68th Native Infantry, Bareilly. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
567. June 1856. Letter from Mr R Christie, Assistant in the Opium Agency at Patna. Forwards a letter to Lady Canning. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
569. June 1856. Letter from Brevet Major T Eyre, 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry, Paymaster Northern Division, Ahmedabad. Asks for political employment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 672.
570. June 1856. Letter from Preonauth Dutt, Calcutta. Asks for employment in Oudh, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, apply to local authority.
571. June 1856. Letter from Annundo Narain Ghose, Calcutta. Asks for employment in Oudh. Copy of reply, apply to local authorities.
572. June to July 1856. Letter from Mr C Kingcome, Registrar of Seamen, Bombay. Asks for the appointment as Registrar of Seamen at Calcutta, with testimonials. Copy of reply, his name will be put forward.
573. June to July 1856. Letter from Reverend W J Parker, Principal Secretary Lawrence Military Asylum, Sanawur. Thanks Lord Canning for becoming Patron. Copy of letter sending 1,000 Rupees. Receipt for letter. See also 480, 645.
574. June to July 1856. Letter from Captain C Hasell, 48th Native Infantry, Lucknow. With a copy of his letter to the Deputy Commissioner offering his bungalow at Nursingpore as a Kutchere, or requesting to be employed in the building of a Kutchere. Copies of references, two anna stamp. Copy of reply, letter transferred to Public Works Department, and further reply. See also 765.
