Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 576 to 600, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 6 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 501 to 600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 591 and 593 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 583 and 587 are missing.

577. June to July 1856. Letter from Messrs Lepage and Company, Calcutta. Enclosing a bill.
578. June to July 1856. Letter from Mr John Gore, Calcutta. Sends 2 Masonic charts for the Governor General's acceptance, and asks for his support (charts no longer enclosed.) Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
579. June to July 1856. Letter from Mr W T Lewis, Civil Service, Penang. Advises that he has sent by Peninsular and Oriental Steamer 'Shanghai' 2 baskets of mangostins. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
580. June to July 1856. Letter from Mr J B Thornhill, 2nd class Assistant Commissioner, Lucknow, on leave, Nainee Tal. Asks to be transferred to the North West Provinces. Copy of reply, refusal.
581. June to July 1856. Letter from The Honourable E A Blundell, Governor of Straits Settlements, Singapore and Malacca, Singapore. Is much obliged by the Private Secretary's withholding from the Governor General his letter of April last remonstrating against Lieutenant Hilliard's appointment to the office of Superintendent of Convicts and Executive Engineer at Penang supposed to be brought about through the influence of Lord Harris. 582. July 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant C W Fletcher, 48th Native Infantry, Lucknow. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
584. June to July 1856. Letter from Lieutenant R H Tulloh, Assistant Executive Officer, Murree. Asks to be Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab. Copy of reply, application noted.
585. June to July 1856. Letter from Lieutenant R P Anderson, 25th Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner, Lucknow. Asks permission to dedicate his 'An Analysis of the Goolistan' to the Governor General. Copy of reply, refusal.
586. June 1856. Copy of letter of Mr Richard Cooling, Calcutta. Announces he is Master Tailor for the Bengal Presidency, appointed by the Honourable Court of Directors. Copy of letter, forwarding this to Colonel Birch CB.
588. June to July 1856. Letter from Mr H M Low, Collector of Customs, Thayetmew [?]. Declines the appointment of Collector of Customs at Moulmein. Copy of earlier letter, offering him the post.
589. July 1856. Letter from Mr T E Mullins, Chandernagpore. Asks for money. Copy of reply, refusal. See also 594.
590. July 1856. Letter from the Reverend Dr Duff. Will wait upon the Governor General. Copy of earlier letter, asking him to call.
591. July 1856. Letter from Major J H Bell, Officiating Mint Master, Calcutta. The instructions will be attended to in the preparation of the next Mint statement (in reply). Copy of earlier letter, asking him to add to his monthly report the output of the preceding month.
592. June to July 1856. Letter from Captain C Taylor, 40th Madras Native Infantry, Pay Master, Bangalore. Asks to be Military Assistant to the Commissioner in Mysore, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, no vacancy at present, application noted.
593. July 1856. Letter from Mr G O'Donnell, Officiating Deputy Superintendent Electric Telegraph Bengal. In reply about mistakes in 2 telegraphs, has asked the Complaint Office at Agra for information. Copy of reply, repeating complaint; copy of earlier letter asking for explanation. 594. July 1856. Letter from Mr W Ritchie, Calcutta. Replies about Mr Mullins. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information. See also 589.
594a. July 1856. Copy of a letter to General Cubbon. The Governor General will await his recommendation before appointing anyone to the vacancy in the office of Military Assistant.
595. July 1856. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Deputy Post Master General, Calcutta. About despatch of letters from Government House.
596. July 1856. Letter from Mrs Jane Angbert, Calcutta. Asks for money. Copy of reply, refusal. See also 612.
597. July 1856. Letter from Dr G Homes, Veterinary Surgeon, Calcutta. Asks for the grant of a piece of land near the Ochterlony Monument to make a Riding Academy there. Copy of reply, refusal.
598. July 1856. Letter from Mr G P Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. Sends the Durbar account for May (enclosed). Copy of reply about this.
599. June to July 1856. Letter from Mr G Campbell, Civil Service, Kussowlee. Sends explanation of his question as to whether or not General Outram is likely to return to Oudh. Endorsed: answered privately.
600. July 1856. Letter from Dr H M Cannon, Inspector of Prisons in the Punjab, Lahore. In support of his application for the Indore Residency Surgeoncy, submits testimonial. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 412, 959.
