‘No. 7 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 601 to 624

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 601 to 624, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 7 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 601 to 700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary - Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, then Gerald Chetwynd Talbot (appointed 1 August 1856) - and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Number 601 has a red cross on it, to indicate that it ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 609 and 609 are missing.
601. May to July 1856. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Governor General's Agent, Central India, Indore. Suggests that when the Governor General acknowledges the Official Report on the Malwa Dispensaries, he addresses a Khureeta to the Maharajah expressing his approbation with what he had done.
602. June to July 1856. Letter from Brigadier W Hill, Bolaram. Asks if Captain Clogstoun may postpone joining the 2nd Gwalior Cavalry for a week or two, as he may be able to exchange with an officer of 1he Hyderabad Cavalry, with the sanction of the Governor General. Exchange vital on account of Mrs Clogstoun's ill health. Copy of reply, orders for Captain Clogstoun delayed; final decision of Governor General not yet known. See also 639.
603. July to August 1856. Letter from Captain D Briggs, President of the General Committee of the Simla Club, Simla. Asks the Governor General to become Patron. Copy of reply, refusal.
604. July 1856. Letter from Chevalier Casella, Sardinian Consul General, Calcutta. Asks an audience for the Reverend Abbe Abbona, a Catholic Missionary. Copy of reply, arranging time. See also 618.
605. July 1856. Letter from Mr T Oldham, Geological Surveyor, Calcutta. Will wait on the Governor General. Copy of earlier letter, asking him to call.
606. July 1856. Letter from Mr Hugh Fraser, Member of the Managing Committee of the Calcutta Young Ladies Institution. Thanks Lady Canning for accepting the office of Patroness. Copy of earlier letter, Lady Canning agrees to be Patroness and wishes to visit the school. See also 587.
607. July 1856. Letter from Mr W J Allen, Commissioner of Chota Nagpore, Hazareebaugh. Asks for a political appointment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 222.
610. July 1856. Letter from Captain H M Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. Sends a map, containing the protected Hill states round Simla for the Governor General. The map of the Soonderbuns is being prepared, and the map of India is being bound in book form (map no longer enclosed).
611. July 1856. Letter from Dr J L Knapp, Assistant Surgeon, in medical charge of Nimar Political Agency, Mundlaisir. Applies for the Residency Surgeoncy at Indore, which will shortly fall vacant. Copy of reply, no vacancy at present, application noted.
612. July 1856. Letter from Reverend A Hamilton, Calcutta. Writes in reply about Mrs Angbert. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also 596.
613. June to July 1856. Letter from Mr W Twemlow, Pegu Province. Asks to be made Collector at Moulmein, states his reasons. Copy of reply, he is appointed. See also 614.
614. July 1856. Letter from Mr G Paton, Officiating Director General of Post Offices, Calcutta. Sends information about Mr Twemlow, with 2 enclosures. See also 614.
615. July 1856. Letter from Captain H Yule, Deputy Secretary Public Works Department Calcutta. Asks for an audience to explain reasons for his application for leave to England. Copy of reply, giving time of interview. See also 617.
616. July 1856. Letter from Captain R Gordon, 4th Rifles Bombay Army, Assistant Commissioner Punjab, Calcutta. Asks to be Assistant to the Resident at Baroda. Copy of reply, refusal.
617. July 1856. Letter from Captain H Yule, Deputy Secretary Public Works Department. Will wait on the Governor General. See also 615.
