Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 626 to 650, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 7 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 601 to 700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures.
626. July 1856. Letter from Mr H Piddington, Calcutta. Sends a pamphlet about the Darjeeling and other mineral springs (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
627. July 1856. Letter from Captain C B Young, Civil Architect, Calcutta. Sends Completion Certificate for iron cots supplied to the Governor General's new Guard House, Wellesley Place, Calcutta, for the use of the Cavalry and Infantry Guards on duty (no longer enclosed).
628. June to July 1856. Letter from Captain M J Battye, from London. Renews his application for extension of leave without loss of his post; or else some other equivalent political appointment on his return. Copy of reply, he is now considered to be a special case, and may defer joining his appointment at Baroda for 6 months after the end of his official leave. 631. July 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant J Magnay, 38th Madras Native Infantry, Chicarole. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.

637. July 1856. Letter from Mr James Hunt, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with reference to urgent railway business. Copy of reply, arranging interview.
638. July 1856. Letter from Lieutenant R Murray, Commandant of Artillery at Lucknow. Asks to be appointed Officiating Superintendent of Electric Telegraph. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, Lieutenant Stewart has been appointed.
639. June to July 1856. Letter from Captain R Clogstoun, 19th Madras Native Infantry, Bolarum. Asks for permission to delay going to Gwalior. Copy of reply, a month's respite granted. See also 602.
640. July 1856. Letter from Reverend J C Thompson, Secretary Calcutta Free School, Calcutta. Confirms time of Lady Canning's visit to the school. Copy of earlier letter, suggesting visit.
641. July 1856. Letter from Mr James Hume, Calcutta. Encloses receipts for subscriptions of Governor General and Private Secretary to Calcutta Town Band. Copy of earlier letter, sending subscriptions. See also 131, 353.
642. July 1856. Copy of reply to Dr R H Irvine, M D 3rd Battalion Artillery, Mooltan. His application for the Apothecary Generalship or a Residency Surgeoncy has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
643. July 1856. Letter from Lieutenant C R Clemons, 3rd Madras European Regiment Madras. Acknowledges receipt of Private Secretary's letter, and adds to his application the Punjab Commission. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 475, 1480.
644. July 1856. Letter from Mr D Eliott, Member of the Legislative Council, Calcutta. Returns thanks on behalf of himself and Mr and Mrs Hill for the use of the bungalow at Barrackpore. See also 576.
645. July 1856. Letter from Reverend W J Parker, Principal and Secretary Lawrence Military Asylum, Sanawur. Forwards a receipt for Lord Canning's donation. See also 480, 573.
646. July 1856. Letter from Mr B C Bailey, Inspector in Charge, Electric Telegraph Calcutta. Sends 3 bills for printed circulars of shipping news, April, May and Jun (no longer enclosed).
647. July 1856. Letter from Mr James Chopin, Calcutta. Sends a letter and prospectus of a book, and asks for the Governor General's patronage Copy of reply, the Governor General would like to see the book first.
648. July 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant C M L Clarke, Officiating Executive Officer, Sylhet. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
649. July 1856. Letter from the Reverend A Hamilton, Calcutta. Sends a copy of the report on the Calcutta Sailors' Home, and asks for the Governor General's support (report no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, the Governor General will subscribe annually. See also 684.
650. July 1856. Letter from Mr J Kains, Calcutta. Asks for the office of Registrar of Merchant Seamen. Copy of reply, refusal.
