Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 651 to 675, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 7 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 601 to 700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary - Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, then Gerald Chetwynd Talbot (appointed 1 August 1856) - and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 658 and 664 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 654 and 660 are missing.
651. July 1856. Letter from Mr W N L Richard, 1st grade Customs Preventive Officer, Calcutta. Forwards copy of another testimonial. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 61, 103, 137, 1446.
652. July 1856. Letter from Mr E B Underhill, Serampore College. Has not yet received Governor General's promised subscription. Copy of reply, asking him to call on the Governor General and 3 other related papers. See also 238, 497, 670.
653. July 1856. Letter from Lieutenant T C Alban, 8th Bombay Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant to the Resident at Baroda. Returns thanks for his appointment of Acting Assistant to the Resident at Baroda. See also 364, 446.
655. July 1856. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Officer Barrackpore Division. Forwards Completion Certificate for pulling down and re-building bathing room at Barrackpore (no longer enclosed).
656. July 1856. Letter from Captain C Harris, 27th Native Infantry, Peshawur. Asks for employment in the Electric Telegraph Department, with copies of testimonials, or failing this, another post.
657. July 1856. Letter from the Editor of the Nuquae Rozgar, Dugshaie. Asks that the Governor General will subscribe to his weekly Oordoo paper. Copy of reply, declined.
658. July 1856. Letter from Reverend J Thomas, Baptist Missionary Press, Calcutta. Sends a pamphlet about a case of persecution in the Backergunge Zillah (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
659. July 1856. Letter from Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Shahpore. Repeats his request for promotion See also 294, 365, 475, 455, 479.
661. July to August 1856. Letter from Mr D Calder, Howrah. Asks for an audience to state the wrongs he has suffered at the hands of the Bengal Government, and asks for employment as a civil engineer. Copy of reply, refusal. See also 318.
662. June to July 1856. Letter from Dr E D Everard, Assistant Surgeon in medical charge of Mergui. Applies for the Civil Surgeoncy of Moulmein, with enclosure. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1435.
663. June to July 1856. Letter from Lieutenant F Browne, H M's 81st Regiment Mecan Meer. Asks to be temporarily appointed Inspector of Schools, so that he may test his qualifications for the post before selling his commission, which prevents him holding a civil appointment. Copy of reply, refused. Endorsed: See Sir James Laurence's letter June 12th.
664. [July 1856]. Letter from Mr R C Gerude. Encloses 2 letters, for the Bishop and for the Reverend Mr Underhill, exhorting them to repentance.
665. July 1856. Letter from Dr Gregory Vos Honorary Secretary District Charitable Society, Calcutta. Asks for an audience. Copy of reply, granting audience.
666. July 1856. Letter from Mr W W Palmer, Civil Auditor, Fort William. Sends a list of covenanted Civil Servants, with a specification of their salaries and allowances on 1st May, and a list of Military officers and others holding civil employment on the same date (no longer enclosed).
667. July 1856. Letter from Mr G O'Donnell, Officiating Deputy Superintendent Electric Telegraph Bengal, Calcutta. Sends a bill for printed circulars supplied from May 1855 to March 1856 (no longer enclosed).
668. July to August 1856. Letter from Mrs A Ogilvie, widow of the late Lieutenant W H M Ogilvie, H M's 4th Foot, Madras. Asks for money. Four 1/2 anna stamps. Copy of reply, refusal. See also 780.
669. July to August 1856. Letter from Major C H Burt, 64th Native Infantry, Peshawur. Asks to be appointed Post Master of Peshawur during the period only that his Regiment is stationed there, with an earlier letter of Private Secretary to an earlier application by Burt. Copy of reply, apply to Director General of the Post Office.
670. July 1856. Letter from Mr E B Underhill, Serampore College. Acknowledges receipt of the Governor General's donation. Copy of earlier letter, forwarding draft for 1000 Rupees; receipt for this letter. See also 238, 497, 652.
671. July 1856. Letter from Copy of letter to C Beadon Esquire. Enclosing a letter of complaint about the Ferozepore Post Office, and asking him to deal with it; copy of reply to complainant.
672. July 1856. Letter from Lieutenant V/ F B Laurie, Madras Artillery, Ootacamund. Asks for political employment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 563.
673. July to August 1856. Letter from Captain J Morrison, 30th Native Infantry, Agra. Asks to be Cantonment Joint Magistrate to Secrora in Oudh, or other civil employment. States his services. Copy of reply, application noted.
674. July to August 1856. Lieutenant W B Girdlestone, 67th Native Infantry, Benares. Asks for staff employment. Copy of reply, asking for further details of qualifications. See also 9, 57, 756.
675. July to August 1856. Copy of reply to Captain J G B Griffin, 3rd Madras Europeans, Secunderabad. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
