Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 676 to 700, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 7 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 601 to 700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary - Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, then Gerald Chetwynd Talbot (appointed 1 August 1856) - and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 671, 691 and 697 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

677. July to August 1856. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Officer, Barrackpore. Sends Completion Certificate for the Government Hay House in the Park, Barrackpore (no longer enclosed).
678. August 1856. Letter from Baboo Govin Chunder Dutt, Officiating 2nd Assistant Accountant to the Government of India, Calcutta. Asks to be confirmed in his present appointment, printed copy of his testimonials. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 687, 698.
679. July to August 1856. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Barrackpore. Proposes that should the Governor General not intend to visit Barrackpore, he should start on the repairs of the road on the bank of the river at once. Copy of reply, begin at once.
680. August 1856. Letter from Ensign W D Shaw, 2nd Native Infantry, Fort William. Asks permission to fish in the tanks in the Barrackpore Park. Copy of reply, granted, in those tanks pointed out by the Park-keeper.
680a. August 1856. Copy of a letter to Dr Allan Webb M D. Lord Canning regrets he will be unable to attend the distribution of prizes at the Martiniere.
681. July to August 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J T Bushby, 67th Native Infantry, Benares. Asks for staff employment, with enclosures. Copy of reply, to what staff vacancy does he refer? See also 713.
682. June to August 1856. Memorandum that the petition of the native Roman Catholic Christians of Bangalore, 10 Jun has been sent to Mr Edmonstone.
683. August 1856. Letter from Captain J H Wright, 1st Madras Native Infantry, Executive Officer Meeaday in Pegu, from Calcutta. In explanation of his interview with the Private Secretary asks to be employed in civil or political fields. Copy of reply, no vacancy, application should be re-made later. 684. July to August 1856. Letter from Mr John Brown, Hon. Secretary Calcutta Sailors' Home. Forwards a receipt for the Governor General's subscription (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 649.
685. August 1856. Letter from Mr G P Edmonstone, Secretary, to the Government, of India, Foreign Department. Sends the Durbar Account for June (no longer enclosed).
686. July to August 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W S Johnson, 6th Bombay Native Infantry, 2nd in Command 1st Oudh Cavalry, Lucknow. Asks to be Assistant to the Resident at Baroda. Copy of reply, no vacancy at Baroda, application noted. Governor General's book No. 147, 148. See also 764, 818.

688. July to August 1856. Letter from Mr W T Lewis, Assistant Resident Councillor at Penang. Advises despatch by the American steamer 'Underwriter' 2 baskets of Mangusteens for Lord and Lady Canning at the request of Mr Blundell. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
689. August 1856. Letter from Ensign P H M Sitwell, 31st Native Infantry. Asks for staff employment (calling card only) See also 1130.
690. July 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Osborne Campbell, Invalid Establishment, Landour. Asks for a small appointment. Cover only. Endorsed: Letter kept in Governor General's book. Recommended by Duke of Argyle.
690a. August 1856. Copy of a letter to the Committee of the Calcutta Religious Tract and Book Society. That the Governor General has subscribed to 25 copies of the Arnnodaya Christian vernacular periodical.
691. August 1856. Letter from Monsieur H Angelucci, in charge of the French Consulate, Calcutta. Acknowledges Lord Canning's donation for the relief of the victims of the inundations in France. Copy of earlier letter, sending 500 Rupees.
692. August 1856. Letter from Mr R B Chapman, Secretary, to the Calcutta Girls' School. Asks for payment of Lord Canning's subscription; with printed prospectus. Copy of reply, sending donation of 400 Rupees. See also 257, 693.
693. August 1856. Letter from Rai Sreenarrain [?] Bysack. Asks D Panioty Esquire, Private Secretary's Office, for a receipt for the above (no. 692) to be filed with the Governor General's vouchers, private account.
694. August 1856. Letter from the Reverend A Duff D D Calcutta. Forwards a pamphlet for the Governor General which he received from England (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
695. July to August 1856. Letter from Captain CP Rigby, 16th Bombay Native Infantry, Kurrachee. Asks for employment under the Government of India; copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, nature of employment wanted must be stated. See also 5.
695a. August 1856. Copy of letter to Major Hollings, Calcutta. The Governor General will be glad to see him.
696. August 1856. Letter from Mr C B Hamilton, Calcutta. Asks for money, Copies of testimonials. See also 840, 870, 899, 1403, 1427.
697. August 1856. Letter from Mr John Gore, Calcutta. Sends a drawing done by himself, and offers his services. Drawing enclosed, allegorical picture. Copy of reply, sending 20 Rupees, stating it is not the wish of the Governor General to accept works he has not ordered. Receipt for 20 Rupees. See also 578, 7274, 7275.
