‘No. 8 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 751 to 775

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 751 to 775, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 8 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 701 to 800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 751, 757, 761 and 769 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 752 and 762 are missing.
751. August 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Govt, of India, Home Department. Replies about the Reverend, J Caldwell's application for aid towards a building at Roorkee. See also 742.
753. August 1856. Letter from Copy of reply to Dr R H Irvine, 3rd Battalion Artillery, Mooltan. His application was transferred to the Military Secretary under Departmental rules.
754. August 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel W E Baker, Secretary Public Works Department, Calcutta. States that the papers regarding Colonel Sage which he showed the Governor General belonged to the Military Department, he will forward them to the Private Secretary. Copy of later letter, forwarding papers.
755. August 1856. Copy of reply to Dr W A Green, MD Civil Surgeon, Dacca. His application for the appointment of Apothecary General has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
756. August 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W B Girdlestone, 67th Native Infantry, Benares. Submits 2 testimonials. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 9, 57, 674.
757. August 1856. Letter from Mr H L Anderson, Secretary, to the Government of Bombay, Political Department. Sends a printed copy from the records of the Bombay Government, of a report by the Inam Commission on the Deccan Surinjams (no longer enclosed).
758. August 1856. Letter from Reverend John Pourie, Calcutta. Acknowledges Lady Canning's donation to the Zenana and select school scheme, and sends a receipt.
759. August 1856. Letter from the Honourable E Drummond, Officiating Secretary to the Government Financial Department. About Lady Bentinck's Funds, transferred to the Bank of Bengal (a charity) See also 760, 761.

761. August 1856. Letter from Mr J A Crawford, Calcutta. Explains his reasons for addressing Lord Canning direct about the transfer of Lady Bentinck's Funds. Memorandum about the fund. See also 759, 766.
763. August 1856. Letter from Dr W Walker, Assistant Surgeon, 2nd European Fusiliers, Subathoo. Asks for the Residency Surgeoncy at Indore. Copy of reply, application noted.
764. August 1856. Letter from Lieutenant WT Johnson, 6th Bombay Native Infantry, 2nd in command 1st Oudh Cavalry, Lucknow. Asks to be recommended for the Suttara Police, a new appointment in the Deccan. Copies of 2 replies See also 686, 818, Governor General's book number 147, 148.
765. August 1856. Letter from Captain C Hasell, 43rd Native Infantry, Lucknow. Asks for an appointment. Copies of 2 replies, no vacancies at present, and an earlier reply about his bungalow (see number 574). See also 574.
766. August 1856. Letter from Dr G G Spilsbury, Physician General and Member of the Medical Board, Calcutta. In order to save references as to nomination of an Assistant Surgeon for Neemuch, states that the Board are prepared to nominate R P Jeston. Note from Mr Edmonstone. Copy of reply, acknowledged. 767. August 1856. Letter from Ensign W G Waterfield, 23rd Native Infantry, Moradabad. Asks for employment. Copy of reply, no more officers may be absent from his regiment at present; will he inform Private Secretary when any return to regimental duty. Application noted. See also 1719.
768. August 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to Government Foreign Department. Replies about Synd Ahmed Ali's card. Copy of reply to Synd Ahmed Ali, politely refusing audience. See also 276, 314, 319
769. August 1856. Copy of Lady Canning's instructions. Ordering pieces of furniture from M Deschamps, Madras. Also copy of letter.
770. August 1856. Letter from Copy of Lady Canning instructions. Ordering a copy of Dr Hooker's Illustrations of the Himalayan Plants. Also copy of letter.
771. August 1856. Letter from Mr G W Snowdon, London. Asks that he may again supply medicine to the Nizam's troops. One enclosure. Copy of reply; when Mr Snowdon had the supply of medicines before, it was the Nizam's Army, but now it is reorganised and part of the Madras Array and as such is supplied from the Government medical stores.
772. August 1856. Letter from Ensign P E A Chamier, Instructor, 34th Native Infantry, Allahabad. Asks to be Assistant Commissioner in Oudh or the Punjab. Four 1/2 anna stamps. Copy of reply, there are at present 7 officers absent from his regiment, and nothing can be done. Application noted.
773. August 1856. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of the Barrackpore Park. Asks which tanks the officers are to be allowed to fish in, and for a list of the officers who have permission to fish. Copy of reply about this.
774. August 1856. Letter from Major W B Legard, 31st Native Infantry, Barrackpore. Asks permission to fish in the tanks in Barrackpore Park. Copy of reply, permission granted, restricted to tanks pointed out by the Park Keeper.
775. August 1856. Letter from Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner 3rd class in the Punjab, Shahpoor. Asks to be Deputy Commissioner of Chota Nagpore, with enclosure. Copy of reply, the appointment is in the gift of the Lieutenant General of Bengal. See also 294, 842.
