Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 776 to 800, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 8 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 701 to 800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot [appointed 1 August 1856], and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 779, 788 and 797 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
776. August 1856. Letter from Lieutenant RN Taylor, Assistant Commissioner Raichore, Singsoogoor. Asks to be Deputy Commissioner Southern Berar in the event of a vacancy, or else Assistant Commissioner 1st class. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 783, 1093, 1581.
777. August 1856. Letter from Mr J B Grisenthwaite, Calcutta. Asks for Governor General's patronage for a poem, which he wishes to read to him. Copy of reply, refused. See also 778, 823.
778. August 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India Home Department. Gives his opinion on Mr Grisenthwaite.
779. August 1856. Anonymous letter from an Englishman. Complaining of the number of Mohammedan and Hindu holidays allowed to the Judges of the Company's courts and praying some kind of reform (47 Mohammedan holidays, and 36 Hindu holidays) Encloses printed list of holidays from an Almanac. Two 1 anna stamps.
780. August 1856. Letter from Mr H A Murray, Private Secretary to Lord Harris, Madras. Replies about Mrs A Ogilvie. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also 668.
781. August 1856. Letter from Captain W McNeile, 5th Native Infantry, late Assistant Commissioner the Punjab, Leia. Has been promoted to a Captain and being the 4th Captain in his regiment on detached employ, he has been remanded to his regiment; but as the Major of his corps intends resigning the number of staff Captains will then come within the prescribed limit, and asks that the order for his remand may be suspended. Note from Mr Edmonstone. Copy of reply, rule cannot be broken. See also 1051, 1257, 1390, 1447, 1556, 1595, 1623.
782. August 1856. Letter from Mr C S Hogg, Calcutta. On behalf of his brother, Mr Stuart Hogg, Civil Service, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, who applied for the Assistant Commissionership at Simla. Copy of reply, application noted.
783. August 1856. Letter from Mr G P Edmonstone, Secretary to Government Foreign Department, Calcutta. About promotion for Lieutenant R N Taylor, 5th Madras Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner in the Assigned Districts. See also 776, 1093, 1581.
784. August 1856. Letter from Lieutenant E C Impey, Adjutant 5th Native Infantry, Umballa. Asks to be Assistant Commissioner in Oudh. Copy of reply, application noted.
785. August 1856. Letter from Aga Mahomed Hussain Chillaly, Calcutta. Encloses a letter from Aga Mahomed Ally Khan, son of the late Aga Kurboli Mahomed, Turkish Consul in Calcutta, and asks that the son may be honoured with the same consideration as his late father. Note from Mr Edmonstone. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
786. August 1856. Letter from Major G E Hollings, 38th Native Infantry, Calcutta. Sends documents to prove the statements he made in his interview with the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, the Governor General has no reason to expect that employment will be offered to Hollings. See also 795.
787. August 1856. Letter from Mr Henry Gersse, Bengal Secretariat. Asks for employment. Copy of reply, please send testimonials. See also 1080.
788. August 1856. Letter from Shaick Abdullah, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with Private Secretary to obtain an audience for the Nawab Ali Nukky Khan. Copy of reply, will he submit reasons for an audience in writing. See also 486, 793, 806.
789. August 1856. Letter from Captain D C Vaurenen, Artillery, Revenue Surveyor, Jubbulpore. Asks to be Deputy Commissioner 3rd class in Oudh, on the grounds of failing sight. Copy of reply, application noted.
790. August 1856. Letter from Lieutenant F M H Forbes, 39th Native Infantry, Jhelum. Asks for a staff appointment. Copy of reply, application noted.
791. August 1856. Letter from Major General J Alexander, unattached, Lucknow. Asks for suitable employment. Copy of reply, application noted, but suitable vacancy unlikely.
792. August to October 1856. Letter from Captain J H Wright, 1st Madras Native Infantry, Executive Officer, Tounghoop Road, Rangoon. Applies for various vacancies. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 11, 53, 144, 621, 683, 700, 792, 950, 1112.
793. August 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government, of India, Foreign Department. Sends his opinion on Shaick Abdullah.
794. August 1856. Letter from Mr R H Snell, Superintendent of Stationery, Calcutta. About paper for the Private Secretary, copy of earlier letter about this.
795. August 1856. Letter from Major G E Hollings, 38th Native Infantry, Calcutta. Explains the grounds on which he inferred that the Governor General would confer some appointment on him. Copy of reply, after a dismissal for misconduct, the Governor General does not see why he should at once be re-instated. Register 786.
796. August 1856. Letter from Mrs C Judge, Calcutta. Applies on behalf of her son, Lieutenant S A T Judge, 67th Native Infantry, for an Adjutancy. Copy of reply, son to apply when eligible. See also 810, 809.
797. August 1856. Letter from Colonel A Abbott, CB Inspector General of Ordnance and Magazines, Calcutta. The Scinde magazines belong to the Bombay Establishment, and he has no information regarding their stock. At Phillore there are 5000 percussion muskets, and more than 2000 with plenty of ammunition at Ferozepore. Should arms have to be sent beyond the Passes it will be necessary to make cases fit to be carried by camels.
798. August 1856. Letter from Lieutenant H B A Poulton 64th, Native Infantry, on leave, Simla. Asks to be Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab. Copy of reply, refusing.
