‘No. 9 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 801 to 825

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 801 to 825, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 9 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 801 to 900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot [appointed 1 August 1856], and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 802, 805, and 820 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 803 is missing.

802. August to September 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon. About Dr Royle's proposed museum in London.
804. September 1856. Letter from Mr W Vincent, Inspector of Post Offices in Pegu, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to stay in Calcutta for a fortnight to obtain knowledge of the workings of the Post Office, and asks for a month's salary in advance. Copies of 2 replies refusing both requests.
805. August to September 1856. Letter from Babajee Sakharam, Secretary to the Juvenile Improvement Library, Bombay. Sends 4th Annual Report.
806. September 1856. Letter from Shaikh Abdullah, Calcutta. Sends some papers, and repeats his desire for an interview. Copy of reply, will he please state his requirements in writing, papers returned. See also 486, 738, 793.
807. August 1856. Letter from Dr D Brandis, Superintendent of forests in Pegu, Rangoon. Sends a letter to the Governor General from Lady Stanley of Alderley (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
808. September 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Calcutta. Has received an official letter from the Officiating Chief Commissioner in Oudh reporting the transfer of Captain Bunbury to the Military Police, and promotions following this, leave a vacancy in the grade of Assistant Commissioner to which Sir M C Jackson can be appointed (he is the nephew of Coverly Jackson). 2 letters.

811. September 1856. Letter from Baboo K M Chatterjea, Assistant Civil Auditor, Calcutta. Forwards Private Secretary's salary bill of August.
812. September 1856. Letter from Mrs C Judge, Calcutta. About her son's employment; also note from Lord Dunkellin. Copy of reply about this. Telegraph Message Number 23. See also 796, 309, 810.
813. September 1856. Letter from Baboo Dheer Krishna Sircar, Calcutta. Asks for a recommendation for a post in a Government office. Copy of reply, declined.
814. September 1856. Letter from Baboo Greedhur Bose Roy and Company Projectors, Chitpore Charitable Vernacular School, Calcutta. Ask for a further contribution to the school. Copy of reply, refused. See also 126, 171, 1387.
815. September 1856. Letter from Mr R Lloyd, Head Uncovenanted Assistant to the Accountant to the Government of Bengal. Submits testimonials (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 411, 2069, 7406.
816. September 1856. Letter from Mr E Currie, President of the Calcutta Auxiliary Bible Society. Sends copies of the Society's Reports, and asks for patronage (reports no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, sending donation.
817. September 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant S A T Judge, 67th Native Infantry, Benares. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
818. September 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W T Johnson, 6th Bombay Native Infantry, 2nd in command, 1st Oudh Cavalry, Lucknow. About an appointment. Copy of reply about this. See also 686, 761, 841.
819. August to September 1856. Letter from Dr R D Peele, Private Secretary to the Governor of Bombay. Submits information about Mr G Wood, Deputy Collector and Deputy Magistrate in Scinde. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also 725, 1027.
820. August to September 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Goodwyn, Superintendent Engineer Lower Provinces, Calcutta. Wishes to remind the Governor General about a conversation on floods in France. Copy of letter to Lord Copley, asking for more information about the floods in France, as the conditions producing these pertain in Bengal. See also 1637 Governor General's Book number 363.

822. August to September 1856. Letter from Major J Johnstone, Deputy Commissioner Hyderabad. Under suspension, from Hingolee, asks for a review of his administration in order that a correct decision on his case might be arrived at. Copy of reply, the case has not yet come before the Governor General officially. Also draft reply. See also 1160, 1324.
823. September 1856. Letter from Mr J B Grisenthwaite, Calcutta. Asks for the Governor General's patronage. Copy of reply, refusal. See also 777, 773.
824. August to September 1856. Letter from Captain A Elliot, 5th Light Cavalry, Assistant General Superintendent Thuggee and Dacoitee Department, Mhow. Asks for the Bhopal Agency. Copy of reply, no vacancy at present. See also 836.
825. September 1856. Copy of reply to Dr J B Dickson, Dum Dum. His application to be Apothecary to the East India Company has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
