Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 826 to 850, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 9 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 801 to 900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 829, 830, 835, 837, and 838 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
826. August to September 1856. Letter from Lieutenant G C Finlay, 12th Madras Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant Commissioner Hyderabad, Ellichpore. Asks for the return of testimonials. Copy of reply, enclosing testimonials. See also 293, 467, 717, 1673.
827. September 1856. Letter from Baboo Goyahram Banerjea, Mooktar, Calcutta. Asks to be informed of the result of a petition. Copy of reply, petition never received by Private Secretary.
828. September 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. Forwards the Durbar accounts for July and Aug (no longer enclosed).
829. August to September 1856. Letter from Shaikh Meajaum Mahomed and Moonshee Moynoodreen, Colootollah, Calcutta. Submit a scheme for taxing prostitutes in Calcutta by which the Government will gain 5,000 Rupees a month. See also 830, 831, 871.
830. September 1856. Letter from Mr S Wauchope, Chief Magistrate, Calcutta. Gives his opinion on the preceding petition See also 829, 831.
831. September 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to Government Home Department. Sends his opinion on the above petition See also 829, 830.
832. August to September 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W H Blowers, Quarter Master and Instructor, 29th Bombay Native Infantry, Belgaum. Asks for civil employment in the Punjab. 2 letters and copy of one testimonial. One 1 anna and one 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 844.
833. September 1856. Letter from Captain G R Phillips, 5th Madras Light Cavalry, Kamptee. Asks for staff employment, preferably civil. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 955.
834. September to October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant S A T Judge, 67th Native Infantry, Benares. Asks for civil employment, states his qualifications. Copy of later reply to telegraphic message, his application for staff duty duly noted. Telegraph Message number 28. See also 796, 809, 810, 812, 817.
835. August to September 1856. Letter from Lieutenant H G Raverty, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner, Punjab, under suspension, Mooltan. Regrets that Lord Canning will not accept the dedication of the Pushtoo Dictionary; hopes that the length of his service, character etc. will be considered and that he will be allowed to exchange appointments with some other officer. Copy of reply, dedication cannot be considered until his case has been determined; exchange refused. See also 707, 723, 1072, 1195.
836. September 1856. Letter from Captain A Elliot, 5 Light Cavalry, Assistant General Superintendent Thuggee and Dacoity Department, Mhow. Withdraws his application for the Bhopal Agency, which he now finds is not vacant. See also 824.
837. August to September 1856. Letter from Mr Schoene Kilburn, and merchants engaged in the foreign trade of Calcutta. Send the Governor General their petition for an assimilation of duties on British and foreign goods: memorandum about this. Copy of reply, the Governor General will receive a deputation from them.
838. August to September 1856. Letter from Major C Davidson, Resident at Baroda. About Captain Battye's return to Baroda, and explains why he asked for Lieutenant Barton; the Kattiawar judicial inquiry may last for years, and needs an experienced officer to deal with it. Perhaps the chiefs in dispute should be made to pay the expenses of a Special Commission, and even then he would wish the present acting assistant to be associated with the Commission. Copies of 4 other letters, including letter asking for settlement of Kattiawar disputes. Copies of 2 replies, Lieutenant Barton will be sent if possible, but has just been granted 3 months' leave. The chiefs interested in the inquiry may be required to pay half the charges thereof. See also 727, 953.
839. September 1856. Letter from Major T Simpson, 57th Native Infantry, Principal Assistant to the Commissioner of Chota Nagpore, Hazareebagh. Asks for the office of Deputy Commissioner of Chota Nagpore; has not received a reply from the Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, who is absent from the Presidency, and wishes not to be overlooked. Copy of reply, the matter has been disposed of. See also 847, 1073, 9089.
840. September 1856. Letter from Mr C B Hamilton, Calcutta. Asks for money. Copy of reply, no reason shown to give assistance. See also 690, 840, 870, 899, 1403, 1427.
841. September 1856. Letter from Dr R D Peele, Officiating Private Secretary to Governor of Bombay, Dapooree. About an application by Lieutenant Johnson to be police officer at Sattara; the proposal to appoint a police officer was disallowed by the Supreme Government. Copies of letters about this. See also 764, 818.
842. September 1856. Letter from Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner of the 3rd class in the Punjab, Shahpoor. Explains his application for the Deputy Commissionership of Chota Nagpore. Copy of earlier letter to Fraser; he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal for this post. See also 775.

844. September 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary the Government Foreign Department. Transfers a letter from Lieutenant W H Blowers, 29th Bombay Native Infantry, with a recommendation (letter no longer enclosed). See also 832.
845. September 1856. Letter from Mr E B Toussaint, Allahabad. Sends a letter from his father, and wishes for a post in the Salt, Opium, or Post Office Departments. Copy of reply, asking for testimonials. See also 884, 941, 951.
846. September 1856. Letter from Mr R H Snell, Superintendent of Stationery, Calcutta. Forwards some paper. Earlier letters about this; copy of reply and draft reply. See also 850.
847. September 1856. Letter from Major T Simpson, 57 , Principal Assistant to the Commissioner of Chota Nagpore, Hazarabagh. Complains of supercession by the appointment to the office of Deputy Commissioner of Chota Nagpore of Captain Oakes, an officer much his junior. Copy of reply, the appointment was by the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. See also 839, 1073, 9089.
848. September 1856. Letter from Mr G C Plowden, Commissioner of Nagpore, Seetabuldee. States the arrangements he has made for filling up the office of Personal Assistant to the Commissioner and hopes the Governor General will confirm them. Copies of 3 letters about this. Lieutenant Cumberlege is officiating as Personal Assistant. See also 875, 934.
