Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 851 to 875, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 9 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 801 to 900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 855, 860, 861, and 868 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 862, 865 and 866 are missing.
851. September 1856. Letter from Mr D B Lindsay, Calcutta. Encloses a letter to the Governor General, partly introductory and partly about Rangoon, and would like an interview. Copy of reply, interview granted.
852. September 1856. Letter from Mr Dudley R Smith, Calcutta. About some garden seats from China for Lady Canning. Also sends a receipt for 100 Rupees, Lord Canning's donation to Sir Jumsetjee Geejeebhoy's testimonial. Copies of earlier letters about both these subjects.
853. September 1856. Copy of reply to Captain J G B Griffin, 3rd Madras Europeans, Secunderabad. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
854. August to September 1856. Letter from Captain R A Doria, Hingolee Sends a statement about his suspension by Mr Bushby, to be laid before the Governor General. Copy of reply, letter passed to Governor General. See also 886, 1070, 1335.
855. September 1856. Letter from the Hon. H B Devereux, Madras. Reports on his progress to Bangalore, and states that there are complaints at Madras of the neglect on the part of the Supreme Government, with reference to most of the proposals sent up by Madras.
856. September 1856. Letter from Mr G P Edmonstone, Calcutta. Captain Shakespear is the best qualified of the nominees for 1st Assistant to Agent, Central India; recommends Lieutenant E G Impey, Adjutant 5th Native Infantry, as Assistant Commissioner Punjab See also 719a.
857. September 1856. Letter from Mr G S Pagan, Officiating Administrator General, Calcutta. Forwards a letter to the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
858. September 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant WP Leicester, 30th Native Infantry. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
859. September 1856. Letter from Mr G P Edmonstone, Calcutta. About medical appointments in Neemuch, and promotions to the Oudh Commission. See also 747, 766.
860. September 1856. Letter from Mr G P Edmonstone, Calcutta. Replies about Lieutenant A Procter's case, remanded to his regiment from Burma for hanging or shooting 2 spies. See also 1853.
861. September 1856. Letter from Mr G P Edmonstone, Calcutta. About Mr Mead's proposal to settle Chinamen at Dalhousie. Encloses an anonymous note, 10 Sept. about affairs at Oudh, and suggests it could be sent to Mr. Jackson. It states that, 'there is a great danger to Lucknow that a person named Luckoo Khan will be routed [?] and a person named Thajroden [?] Hossen Khan Camboo at Lucknow by the intention of his son in law named Mossafer Hossen Khan and Essen Hossen Khan his brother now at Calcutta King's Camp Oude has made a proposal to fire down Lucknow that the Companys has broken down their three Musjeed [?] for this matter. By this the whole of the Rajas were all in one intention, and has kept 1000 Thousand Troops in Private Two Lacs of Rupees has been sent by Essen Hossen Khan which was paid by Mossafer Hossen Khan for the expense of the Troops and also a person named Ahmed Ally Khan Vakeel at Cawnpore given great assistance towards this... ...take notice about this or else we all shall be destroyed by this fire'.
863. September 1856. Letter from the Hon. E Drummond, Calcutta. Mr Harrison is to be permanent 1st Assistant; the other appointments to wait until Mr Lushington's return. See also 698, 673, 687, 726, 732, 864.
864. September 1856. Letter from Baboo Govin Chunder Butt, Officiating 2nd Assistant to the Accountant General, Treasury. Asks to be made 2nd Assistant to the Accountant General. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 678, 687, 693, 863.
867. September 1856. Letter from Captain D S Dodgson, 30th Native Infantry, Brigade Major, Benares. Submits an introductory letter, and asks for the Private Secretary's interest on behalf of his application to the Military Secretary, for the Pension Pay Mastership at Barrackpore, (introductory letter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Governor General's Book number 193.
868. September 1856. Letter from Mr G W Kellner, Chief Assistant to the Financial Secretary, Calcutta. Asks to be Assistant Accountant General, or Assistant Sub-Treasurer, submits copies of testimonials. Also submits a copy of report on Stud Accounts etc., printed. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 698, 863, 879.
869. September 1856. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Engineer, Barrackpore Division. Sends Completion Certificate on repairs to the civil political buildings in the Park, Barrackpore (no longer enclosed).
870. September 1856. Letter from Mr C B Hamilton, Calcutta. Asks for money. Copy of reply, sending 100 Rupees. Also copy of letter to Lieutenant Colonel W E Baker, Public Works Department, about Mr Hamilton. See also 696, 840, 870, 899, 1403, 1427.
871. September 1856. Letter from Shaikh Meajohn Mahamed and Moonshee Moynooddeen. Ask for a reply to their scheme for taxing prostitutes in Calcutta. See also 829, 830, 831.
872. September 1856. Copy of letter to the Honourable Walter Elliot, Madras. About a post for Captain Fagan. It is a long time since Private Secretary and Elliot met, Private Secretary has passed his whole Ceylon career in the interval. He has heard that Lord Elphinstone had aged considerably, he wishes he had had nothing to do with Ceylon, it will prevent his good fortune in holding 2 Indian Governments, doing him all the good it might have done. 873. September 1856. Letter from Mr R H Snell, Superintendent of Stationery, Calcutta. Forwards some paper, and swan quills.
874. September 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H M Durand, Officiating Superintendent Engineer, Lower Provinces, Calcutta. Asks for employment in the higher class of political appointments, statement of his services. Copy of letter to the Hon. H B Devereux, Judicial Commissioner, Mysore, asking him what is thought of Durand, and what sort of appointment he should have. Also sending a petition to Devereux. See also 34, 312, 1245.
