Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 876 to 900, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 9 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 801 to 900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary - Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, then Gerald Chetwynd Talbot [appointed 1 August 1856] - and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 879 and 886 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 832 and 896 are missing.
876. September 1856. Letter from Colonel R J H Birch, CB Calcutta. Returns with remarks the list of officers on whom his opinion was requested, and has added 2 officers' names.
877. September 1856. Letter from Captain R N Raikes, 67th Native Infantry, 2nd in command, 1st Cavalry Gwalior Contingent, on leave, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary. See also 9452, 217.
878. September 1856. Copy of a letter to H A Murray Esquire, Private Secretary Madras. Asking him to pay for 6 copies of a 'Railway Polka' dedicated to Lady Canning.
879. September 1856. Letter from Mr G W Kellner, Chief Assistant to the Financial Secretary Calcutta. Forwards a corrected copy of the report on Stud Accounts (enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 698, 863, 868.
880. September 1856. Letter from Mr G P Edmonstone, Calcutta. About appointments in the Pegu Topographical Survey. See also 537, 848, 875, 894.
881. September 1856. Letter from Chundy Churn Singha, Bali. Submits a prospectus to obtain a contribution for the Bali training school, (no longer enclosed). See also 731, 745.
883. September 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J B Lind, 24th Native Infantry, Adjutant 5th Punjab Infantry, Bunnoo. Applies for a transfer from military to civil employment. Copy of reply, application noted. Copy of letter to Sir John Lawrence KCB, Murree, about Lieutenant Lind. See also 1007.
884. September to October 1856. Letter from Mr E B Toussaint, Allahabad. Encloses copies of testimonials in support of his earlier application. Copy of reply, he should apply to local authorities. See also 845, 941, 951.
885. April to September 1856. Letter from Mr M Grey, Secretary, to the Government, of Bengal, Calcutta. Sends a list of officers in the Bengal Establishment, junior to Messrs Watkins, Cunliffe, and J B Thornhill, for employment in Oudh.
886. August to September 1856. Letter from Dr J H Orr, Madras Establishment, 4th Hyderabad Cavalry, Hingoolie. About Captain Doria's conduct in the late outbreak in the Hyderabad Contingent. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 854, 1010, 1335.
887. September 1856. Letter from Mahomed Reja Eslaumbully, Calcutta. Asks for an interview. Copy of reply, will he please state his business in writing.
888. September 1856. Letter from Mr C H Medley, Commissariat Audit Office, Calcutta. Sends a letter to the Governor General asking for money. Memorandum about this.
889. September 1856. Letter from Mr C H Medley, Commissariat Audit Office, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to his earlier letter (See also 888). Copy of reply, request for money refused.
890. September 1856. Copy of reply to Dr D J O'Callaghan surgeon, Fort William. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
891. September 1856. Letter from Lieutenant G H M Mason, 74th Native Infantry, Assistant to the Agent to the Governor General Rajpootana and Officiating Political Agent, Harowty, Deolee, Ajmere. Asks for a political appointment. Copy of reply, application noted, no vacancies at present. See also 1400.
892. September 1856. Letter from Mr C Gardener, late of the Commissariat, Calcutta. Asks for an appointment in the Opium or Salt Departments, or as Agent for the supply of Stores to the Commissariat of Rangoon. Copy of reply, refusing. Also 2 other papers. See also 882, 893, 905.
893. September 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel W B Thompson, Deputy Commissary General, Calcutta. Writes about Mr Gardener. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information. See also 892.
894. September 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J R Pearson, Horse Artillery, Simla. Accepts with thanks the appointment as 2nd class Assistant in the Pegu Topographical Survey Copies of 3 letters to Lieutenant E C S Williams about appointments in the Pegu Survey. 895. September 1856. Letter from Captain B Hawes, 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers, Deputy Commissioner in charge, Seonee. Has just heard of his remand to his Regiment on his promotion to a captaincy (making him the 7th Captain absent from his regiment, the rule only allowing 6) and explains that as this is not exactly the case, may he be exempted. Letter from Colonel Birch about this Memorandum about Hawes. Copy of reply, regretting that no exception can be made. See also 983.
897. October 1856. Note of Lieutenant H C E Ward, 5th Native Infantry, Umballa. His recommendation by Sir Henry Ward and the Reverend Mr Hamilton.
898. October 1856. Letter from Captain C L Showers, 14th Native Infantry, Assistant to the Governor General's Agent, Rajpootana, on leave, Calcutta. Submits a memorandum of his past services, and offers to accompany the Persian expedition to make confidential reports as a civilian, if such a post is contemplated. Copies of 2 replies, papers returned, such an appointment unlikely. Also memorandum. See also 1078, 1115. Miscellaneous Bundle Number 66.
899. September to October 1856. Letter from Mr C Hamilton, Calcutta. Thanks the Governor General for his donation of 100 Rupees. See also 696, 840, 870, 899, 1403, 1427.
900. September to October 1856. Letter from Mahomed Reja Eslambooly, Calcutta. Renews his request for an interview with the Governor General in order to deliver a letter to him from the King of Rome. Copy of reply, please submit business in writing. See also 887, 901.
