Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 901 to 923, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 10 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 901 to 1000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 915 and 919 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 924 is missing.
901. October 1856. Letter from Mahomed Reja Eslamboolly, Calcutta. Having heard in Islambool that the Governor General was anxious to learn the Roman language, has come all the way to offer his services; should his services not be required begs for some travelling expenses to return to his country. See also 887, 900.
902. September 1856. Letter from Mr C H Medley, Calcutta. Asks for the return of a certificate, and asks the Private Secretary for some aid. See also 888, 889.
903. September to October 1856. Letter from Mr G O'Donnell, Officiating Deputy Superintendent Electric Telegraph Bengal. Sends 8 bills for telegraphs.
904. September to October 1856. Letter from Mrs M A Barnes, Calcutta. Asks for money. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of letter about Mrs Barnes, from Dr Vos. Also memorandum. Copy of reply, refusing.
905. September 1856. Letter from Colonel R J H Birch, CB Calcutta. In reply, about Mr Gardener and Goruckpore Hospital. See also 892.
906. October 1856. Letter from Baboo K M Chatterjea, Calcutta. Forwards the Private Secretary's salary bill for Sept (no longer enclosed).
907. September to October 1856. Letter from Baboo Praunnauth Bose, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to his earlier letter. Copy of reply about an invitation. See also 936.
908. October 1856. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Deputy Post Master General, Calcutta. States that the cover of Mrs Rain's letter was received with the London Mail per 'Nubia', as delivered at Government House, open and without any enclosures.
909. September to October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W R Shakespear, 3rd Madras Light Cavalry, Deputy Bheel Agent and Political Assistant Indore. In reply, prefers to relinquish his present appointment, to be appointed 2nd Assistant and to officiate as 1st Assistant to the Governor General's Agent for Central India. 910. September to October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant G Cumming, 17th Bombay Native Infantry Officiating 2nd Assistant to the Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Should the Governor General not confirm him in his present appointment, he would like to be appointed Deputy Bheel Agent and Political Assistant, also remaining Officiating 2nd Assistant. Copy of reply, he is to be Deputy Bheel Agent, and Officiating 2nd Assistant. See also 720, 849.
911. September to October 1856. Letter from Mrs A Bellew, Calcutta. Applies on behalf of her son, Dr F F Bellew, the Civil Assistant Surgeon at Mymensing, for the Residency Surgeoncy at Indore. Copy of reply, application noted, no vacancy at present. See also 912, 942, 928, 1061, 1394.
912. October 1856. Letter from Mr P W Le Geyt, Calcutta. Recommends Dr P F Bellew. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 911, 942, 928, 1061, 1394.
913. October 1856. Letter from Mr C H Medley, Calcutta. Asks for further aid. Copy of reply, sending 50 Rupees from the Governor General and 10 Rupees from the Private Secretary, no more will be sent. See also 883, 889, 799, 9272.
914. September to October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Donald Macleod, 12th Native Infantry, Officiating 2nd in command, Arracan Battalion, Khyook Phyoo. Asks for civil employment in Arracan or Burma. Copy of reply, application noted.
915. October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J P Tennant, Engineers, 1st Assistant Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, Dehra Dun. Submits a memorandum showing within what limits an annular eclipse will be seen. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
916. October 1856. Letter from Mr C H Medley, Calcutta. Acknowledges donations to him. See also 888, 889, 913.
917. October 1856. Letter from Captain C B Young, Civil Architect, Calcutta. Forwards completion certificates for works at Government House (no longer enclosed).
918. September to October 1856. Letter from Dr R D Peele, Private Secretary to the Governor of Bombay. About Lieutenant W T Johnstone's application for the Satara police. See also 841, 764, 818, 918.
919. October 1856. Letter from Mr G P Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government, Foreign Department. About Impeyan Pheasants and other game birds of the temperate zones of the Hill Ranges of India, which the Council of the Zoological Society of London wished to import into London. 921. September to October 1856. Letter from Lord H U Browne, Officiating Magistrate of Monghyr. Asks to be made Under Secretary. 2 letters. Also note from Mr Edmonstone. Copy of reply, vacancy filled.
922. September to October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J N H Maclean, 32nd Madras Native Infantry, Extra Assistant Commissioner Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, Lullutpore. Expects his Captaincy soon, by the extra captain that is to be added to each regiment, and begs to be excused from the operation of the general rule. With a testimonial. Copy of reply, no exemptions can be permitted. See also 1116.
