Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 926 to 950, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 10 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 901 to 1000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 946, 947 and 949 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 925, 927, 932 and 943 are missing.
926. September to October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J Williamson, 49th Native Infantry, 2nd in command and Officiating Commandant 5th Punjab Infantry. Asks to be Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, with reference to Sir John Lawrence. Also memorandum. Copy of reply, application noted.
928. October 1856. Letter from Dr P F Bellew, Civil Assistant Surgeon of Mymensingh. Applies for the Residency Surgeoncy at Indore. Copy of reply, cannot be considered until post is vacant. See also 911, 912, 942, 1061, 1394.
929. September to October 1856. Letter from Mrs C Burleigh, Batticaloa, Ceylon. Asks for an appointment for her son Mr S V Burleigh, either in the uncovenanted civil service, or in any of the Public Works now going on in India. Copy of reply, Private Secretary does not advise Mr Burleigh to come to India, he would find a host of competitors who knew the country, and knew the language. For the Public Works Department a knowledge of engineering is essential.
930. September to October 1856. Letter from Major G Ramsay, Resident at Nepal. Recommends Captain Irwin for a transfer, because of ill-health. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 931.
931. September to October 1856. Letter from Captain W W Irwin, Assistant Resident, Nepal. Asks for a transfer to the Plains. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 930.
933. October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Phillip Harrison Le Geyt, 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry, and Adjutant, Guzerat Gujerat [?] Irregular Horse. Offers himself as Assistant Commissioner in Oudh.
934. September 1856. Letter from Mr George Plowden, Commissioner of Nagpore, Seetabuldee. In reply, about the nomination of his personal assistant. See also 848, 875.
935. September to October 1856. Letter from Baboo Govin Chunder Dutt, Officiating 2nd Assistant to the Accountant General, Treasury. Re-applies for confirmation of his post, and submits a further application, copies of letters, etc. Memorandum. See also 678, 687, 693, 863, 864.
936. October 1856. Letter from Baboo Praunath Bose, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary. See also 907.
937. August 1856. Memorandum from Captain W K Loyd, Officiating Commissioner of Ordnance. About the staff allowance for Captain Fitzgerald.
938. October 1856. Letter from Mr Hugh McLardy, Manager Ganges Steam Navigation Company, Calcutta. Submits a return showing the speed and power of the steamers of the Ganges Steam Navigation Company. Copy of earlier letter asking for this information.
939. October 1856. Letter from Mr J F Stace, Secretary to the India General Steam Navigation Company, Calcutta. Submits a return showing the speed and power of the steamers of the India General Steam Navigation Company. Also memorandum. Copy of earlier letter asking for this information.
940. October 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Foreign Department Calcutta. Forwarding a letter from Captain Thuillier, and the map of Persia for the Governor General.
941. October 1856. Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to the Government of Bengal. Replies about Mr E B Toussaint. Copy of earlier letter, asking Mr Grey if he could find a post for Mr Toussaint. See also 845, 834.
942. October 1856. Letter from Dr N Chevers, Secretary to the Medical Board. Replies about Dr P F Bellew. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information. See also 911, 912, 928, 1061, 1394.
944. October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J Black, 2nd Bombay Grenadiers, 1st class Assistant Commissioner Oudh, Mahorada. Wishes to know if he would be allowed to resign if he was employed in the Political Department under the Bombay Government. Copy of reply, no answer can be given until the Bombay Government requests his services. See also 1029, 1266.
945. September 1856. Letter from Major R N Raikes, 67th Native Infantry, Calcutta. Submits papers and asks to be considered for the command of his regiment when vacant; he had made an error of judgement when in command of a detachment in Pegu in 1854, and was punished by being deprived of the succession to the command of a regiment in the Gwalior Contingent. Copy of reply, refused. See also 377, 217.

947. September 1856. Letter from Mr Craigie of the Civil Service. Asks for an interview; he was suspended for 6 months. Copy of memorandum about his case.
947a. October 1856. Copy of a letter to the Lord Bishop of Calcutta. About the illness of Mrs Ellerton.
948. October 1856. Copy of reply to Dr H Baillie, Civil Surgeon, Hooghly. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
949. October 1856. Letter from Mr H A Murray, Private Secretary to the Governor of Madras. Asks if Archdeacons in Calcutta take precedence over full Colonels. Copy of reply about this. See also 968.
950. October 1856. Letter from Major A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. Replies about Captain J H Wright, suggests an appointment for him as Magistrate at Moulmein. Copy of earlier letter, about Captain Wright. See also 792, 1112.
