Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 951 to 974, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 10 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 901 to 1000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 965 and 968 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 957, 958, 970 and 975 are missing.
951. October 1856. Letter from Mr E B Toussaint, Allahabad. Asks for a reply to his letter asking for a situation. See also 845, 884.
952. September to October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant L C Barton, Assistant Commissioner Punjab, Leia Mooltan. Explains why he applied for leave, he wishes to get married. Copy of earlier letter asking him if he could forgo his leave. See also 838, 953, 1047.
953. October 1856. Letter from Major C Davidson, Resident at Baroda. Has forwarded a copy of the Court's despatch, and a request that an officer may be specially appointed to conduct the enquiry in Kattywar. Copy of reply, Lieutenant Barton has applied for leave to get married; the Governor General has directed him to stay at Baroda on his way to the enquiry at Kattywar, and complete his private affairs first. 954. October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J R Pearson, Horse Artillery, on leave, Simla. Will join his new appointment as 2nd class Assistant in the Pegu Topographical Survey as soon as possible. Copy of earlier letter, notifying him of his appointment. See also 537, 875, 880, 894.
955. October 1856. Letter from Captain G R Phillips, 5th Madras Light Cavalry, Kamptee. Explains that he hoped to be recommended to the notice of the Governor General by some of his friends and has been disappointed. See also 833.
956. October 1856. Letter from Moulvee Hafiz Neaz Ahmed Khan, Dhurrumtollah. Asks for a recommendation to the Lieutenant Governor of North West Provinces, or the Chief Commissioner of Oudh. Copy of reply, request refused. See also 232, 554, 5912.
959. October 1856. Letter from Dr H M Cannon, Assistant Surgeon, late Inspector of Prisons Punjab, on leave, Simla. Hopes that his appointment to the civil charge of Moradabad will not interfere with his application for the Residency Surgeoncy at Indore. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 412, 600.
960. October 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary, to the Government of India, Home Department, Calcutta. With a letter about the Stationery Office (not enclosed).
961. October 1856. Letter from Badula Khan, Head Sirdar of Barrackpore, Government Garden, Calcutta. Forwards a petition from Buddoo Luck, late Head Sirdar of Barrackpore, Government Garden, praying for restoration to his situation from which he was dismissed unjustly. Copy of reply, the Governor General sees no reason to interfere. Also copy of letter to Mr Sharp at Barrackpore. See also 996, 1018, 1258, 1342.
962. October 1856. Letter from Mr R S Rice, Extra Preventive Office, Calcutta. Asks for 80 Rupees to discharge a debt. Copy of reply, refusal. Copy of letter about Rice. See also 989.
963. October 1856. Copy of reply to Captain G W Peyton, 25th Madras Native Infantry, Ootacamund. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
964. October 1856. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Deputy Post Master General, Calcutta. Sends a letter from the Deputy Post Master of Delhi, (no longer enclosed) about missing registered letters. Copies of 2 replies, the registered letters have been received.
965. October 1856. Letter from Mr W Edwards, Magistrate and Collector, Budaoon. About the importation to England of Impeyan pheasants and other game birds of the Himalayas. Copy of earlier letter to Mr Edwards about this. Telegraph Message No. 40 Governor General's Book No. 209, 210, 225. 966. October 1856. Letter from Mr T Coleman, Conductor Ordnance Commissariat, Fort William. In reply states that he is the person referred to in a letter to the Governor General from Mr W Coleman of Canada West. Copy of earlier letter about this. See also 967.
967. October 1856. Letter from Mr W Coleman, Seely's Bay Post Office, Leeds, Canada West. Encloses a letter to his brother and asks that it may be forwarded. Copy of reply, the letter has been forwarded to Mr T Coleman, Conductor Ordnance Commissariat. See also 966.
968. October 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary, to the Govt, of India, Home Department Calcutta. Replies about the precedence of Archdeacons in Calcutta. See also 949.

971. October 1856. Letter from Mr G P Edmonstone, Secretary, to the Government of India, Foreign Department Calcutta. About an Assistant to Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner of Simla; suggests Lieutenant Maxwell, or Mr M Hogg of the Civil Service.
972. October 1856. Copy of reply to Dr J Macpherson, Calcutta. The Private Secretary has given Major Bouverie the papers Macpherson left with Private Secretary.
