Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 976 to 1000, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 10 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 901 to 1000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary - Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, then Gerald Chetwynd Talbot [appointed 1 August 1856] - and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 982 and 985 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 981 and 990 are missing.

977. August 1856. Memorandum that Lieutenant Colonel J H Grant C B of Her Majesty's 9th Lancers is recommended by Lady C Murray.
978. July 1856. Memorandum that Captain W D A R Short, Bengal Engineers, Public Works Department, Embankment Circle 1st class, Lower Provinces, and Captain Day, Land Survey, are recommended by the Hon. Mr A Kinnaird. See also 9009, 3097.
979. August 1856. Memorandum that Lieutenant R A W C Stuart, 17th Madras Native Infantry, is recommended by the Dowager Lady Caledon.
980. October 1856. Memorandum that Lieutenant W Paul, 7th Bengal Native Infantry, and Adjutant 4th Punjab Infantry, is recommended by Lady A Duff.
982. October 1856. Letter from Captain H C James, Officiating Superintendent of Darjeeling. In reply, about game birds of the Himalayas for England. Copy of earlier letter about this. 985. August 1856. Letter from The Reverend G G Cuthbert, Calcutta. Forwards a collated copy of papers on the bearing of indigo cultivation in Bengal on the condition of the ryots (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Endorsed: Miscellaneous: No. 25a.
986. c. July to October 1856. Memorandum that Captain N R Sneyd, 57th Native Infantry, and Lieutenant G P de P Falconnet, Madras Engineers, Executive Engineer Pegu Division, are recommended by W Alexander Esquire See also 1672. Governor General's Book No. 372.

993. October 1856. Letter from His Highness Prince Gholam Mohamed Shah, Russapuglah. On behalf of the Mysore Princes begs that the Governor General be pleased to nominate Dr Webb to act as their physician during the absence on leave of Dr Strong. Copy of reply, granted.
