Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1002 to 1025, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 11 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1001 to 1100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary - Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, then Gerald Chetwynd Talbot [appointed 1 August 1856] - and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 1010, 1014, 1016, 1017, and 1017a have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1001 is missing.
1002. October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant F G Stewart, Assistant Superintendent Revenue Survey, Southern Mahratta Country, from Camp, Dharwar. Asks for employment as an Assistant Commissioner in Oudh or the Punjab. Copy of reply, application noted.
1003. October 1856. Letter from Mahataboo, wife of the late Mohun Lall Khettre of Bhaugulpore, Calcutta. Asks for reply to her petition against Mohun Shaw Poddar of Bhaugulpore. Copy of reply, petition transferred to Home Department.
1004. October 1856. Letter from Captain W A Riach, 12th Madras Native Infantry, Bangalore. Asks for a staff appointment, with enclosures. Copy of reply, application noted, appointment unlikely. See also 80.
1005. October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J H Jenkins, 44th Native Infantry, Agra. Renews his application for staff appointment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 120, 499.
1006. September to October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J Ashburner, 18th Bombay Native Infantry, Aden. Asks for a civil or political appointment. Copy of reply, application noted, appointment unlikely. See also 1134, 4191, 4209, 5090
1007. October 1856. Letter from Sir John Lawrence, KCB Chief Commissioner, Camp Treit. In reply, Lieutenant Lind is fitted for civil employment; does not at present want any more Assistant Commissioners for the Punjab but when Assistants are wanted will be willing to have Lieutenant Lind on probation. 1008. October 1856. Copy of reply to Captain C Hasell, 28th Native Infantry. His application for the command of 7th Regiment Oudh Contingent has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
1009. October 1856. Letter from Major R R W Ellis, 23rd Native Infantry, Political Assistant at Bundelcund, Nagod, Bughela Khand. Wishes to be considered as Agent to Governor General, Central India in succession to Sir Robert Hamilton. Copy of reply, application will be considered when the vacancy occurs. Also memorandum. 1010. October 1856. Letter from Captain R A Doria, 28th Madras Native Infantry, Hingolee. Excuses his offence which led to his removal from the command of the 4th Cavalry Hyderabad Contingent; he struck a native boy for beating a drum. Copy of reply, matter cannot be discussed further. Note from Governor General. See also 854, 886, 1335.
1011. October 1856. Letter from the Reverend H S Fisher, Senior Presidency Chaplain, Calcutta. Asks for an audience for the Bishop of Madras.
1012. October 1856. Letter from His Highness the Prince Gholam Mohumed, Russapuglah. Returns thanks for the permission to nominate Dr Webb as physician to the Mysore family. See also 993.
1013. October 1856. Letter from Captain C H Nicholetts, 1st Regiment Light Cavalry, Mussoorie. Asks for political employment, or with some Irregular Cavalry Corps. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 560, 1451, 3385.
1014. October 1856. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore. About a Commissioner for settling the boundary dispute at Malwa; no new appointment necessary. He hopes that Lieutenant Osborne's selection to accompany the Rewah Rajah will be approved, he was selected once before but owing to the Southal Outbreak the Rajah's journey was postponed. Copy of earlier letter asking him to nominate a Commissioner; and copy of reply, approving his arrangements.
1015. October 1856. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, Officiating Assistant General Superintendent for Thuggee, Belgaum. Wishes to act in his present post, permanently if Captain Harvey, the holder, does not return. Copy of reply, no vacancy yet.
1016. October 1856. Letter from Major H Ramsay, Deputy Commissioner Kumaoon. About game birds of the Himalayas for England. Copy of earlier letter about this. Telegraph Message number 40. 1017. June to October 1856. Letter from Mrs Louisa M Harrison. About a patent ant deterrent.
1017a. September 1856. Letter from Sir John Bowring, Hong Kong. Promises to assist the Duke of Valumbrosa on his visit to Japan; states the King of Siam's anxiety to be in communication with the Governor General; remarks on the Americans having established a large commercial interest in trade far more than the British the French appear to be making Bangkok the central post for missionary purposes. He views the progress of the Russians down the Amoor and into Tartary as foreboding embarrassment more than at present anticipated. Also memorandum by Private Secretary.
1018. October 1856. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of the Barrackpore Park. In reply, there was never a Buddoo Luck who was Head Sirdar of the Park. See also 961, 996, 1258, 1342.
1019. October 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India, Home Department Calcutta. About the Straits medical appointments. See also 1094.
1020. October 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J H Warden, 13th Madras Native Infantry, Madras. Encloses a letter from Lord Clanricarde, and asks for an appointment in the Nagpore or Mysore Commission (letter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement, no hopes of an appointment, in either Commission. Governor General's Book number 216, 217.
