‘No. 11 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 1026 to 1050

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1026 to 1050, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 11 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1001 to 1100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 1042, 1047, and 1048 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1043 and 1049 are missing.
1026. October 1856. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent, Barrackpore Park. Reports on the state of the Park, and encloses 2 estimates. Copy of letter to Captain Eliot, Executive Officer, Barrackpore, asking him to examine the estimates.
1027. October 1856. Letter from Mr George Wood, Deputy Collector and Deputy Magistrate in Scinde, Shikarpore. Submits the resolution of the Bombay Government, declining to forward to the Supreme Government his appeal against a reduction in his salary; asks to be transferred. Copy of reply, Governor General will not interfere in the matter of his salary; he cannot hold out any hope of other employment. Other papers about Wood's case. See also 725, 819.
1028. October 1856. Memorandum about La Martiniere Cricket Club subscription; copy of letter. Asking if this unaccompanied memorandum came from the pupils of the Martiniere with the knowledge of the authorities. Also memorandum of Private Secretary.
1029. October 1856. Letter from Mr C C Jackson, Chief Commissioner of Lucknow, Camp, Fyzabad. In reply, he can spare Lieutenant J Black 1st class Assistant Commissioner to an appointment under the Bombay Government; wishes for more Assistants in the Province, recommends Lieutenant C Martin 1st Light Cavalry for a 2nd class Assistant Commissionership. Copy of earlier letter asking if Lieutenant Black may resign his present appointment in Oudh. See also 944, 1266.

1032. October 1856. Letter from the Honourable A Eden, Civil Service Calcutta. Asks for the return of some charts of Gabriel and Flot Island. See also 1070.
1033. October 1856. Letter from Mr P W Le Geyt, Calcutta. Introduces Captain Andrews who has an application from Mrs Deacle for permission to use the Town Hall for theatrical purposes. See also 1034.
1034. October 1856. Letter from Mrs Deacle, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to use the Town Hall for theatrical purposes. Copy of reply, apply to Chief magistrate, Calcutta. Also memorandum. See also 1033.
1035. October 1856. Letter from Mr Joseph Van Gelder, Calcutta. In reply, about the performance to be given in the Lyric Theatre. Copy of earlier letter asking for information; copy of reply, declining a box, but Governor General will subscribe later. Also draft reply.
1036. October 1856. Letter from Mr R Fortune. Having completed a tour of inspection of tea plants in the North West Provinces, asks for an interview. Copy of reply, interview granted.
1037. October 1856. Letter from Madame Blanche de l'Opital, Calcutta. Wishes to announce her concert as under the patronage of the Governor General. Copy of reply, refused. See also 1128, 1129.
1038. October 1856. Letter from Messrs J Spence and Company, Calcutta. Applying for some of the supper tables of the Government House for an exhibition of Jail manufactures.
1039. November 1856. Letter from Baboo K M Chatterjea, Assistant to the Civil Auditor, Calcutta. Forwards the Private Secretary's salary bill for October.
1040. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Hannyngton, Calcutta. Applies for the Commissionership of the South Western Frontier which will become vacant in consequence of Mr Allen's promotion. Copy of reply 3 November, apply to Lieutenant Governor of Bengal; copy of reply of 13 November, if he wishes an audience to assure the Governor General that no slur is cast upon him by his not being selected by the Lieutenant Governor to succeed to this post, the interview is unnecessary, as his Lordship knows this. 1041. November 1856. Letter from Mr W Meyers, late in the service of the Honourable East India Company, Calcutta. Asks for an Assistant Commissionership or Magistracy or other suitable post. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1090, 1930.
1042. October to November 1856. Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner, Simla. In reply, about the importation to England of Himlayan game birds. 1045. November 1856. Letter from Dr H F Williams M D, Civil Assistant Surgeon of Tipperah, Calcutta. Asks to be Civil Assistant Surgeon at Penang when post is vacant. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1019, 1094, 1240.
1046. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant B C Hitchins, Madras Artillery, Commissary of Ordnance, Saugor. Asks for an appointment in the Saugor Commission. Copy of reply, apply to Lieutenant Governor, North West Provinces. See also 1306, 1509.
1047. October to November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant L C Barton, Assistant Commissioner Punjab, Leia Mooltan. Returns thanks for his appointment to inquire into the causes of the dispute between the Kattiawar Chiefs, and permission to obtain leave to be married. Copies of 2 letters to Barton about this. 1048. October 1856. Letter from Mr G Jones, trader in Oudh, Fyzabad. Complains of irregularities on the part of the Oudh authorities and in particular of the conduct of the Deputy Commissioner of Durriabad, who neglects his public duties and is generally seen riding about the town in company with Lieutenant Hawes and Apothecary Thompson armed with guns and spears and shooting and spearing pariah dogs regardless of the lives of the populace.
1050. November 1856. Letter from Mr C S O'Reilly, Calcutta. Encloses a letter for the Governor General, asking for employment. Copy of reply, refused.
