Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1051 to 1075, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 11 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1001 to 1100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 1058, 1059, and 1072 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1056 is missing.
1051. October to November 1856. Letter from Captain W McNeile, 5th Native Infantry, late Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Umballa. Wishes to be considered for re-employment on the staff on the retirement of Major Birch. Copy of reply, re-apply when vacancy occurs. See also 781, 1257, 1390, 1447, 1556, 1595, 1623.
1052. November 1856. Letter from Mr H C Hamilton, Opium Agent, Benares, Ghazeepore. Asks for employment on the Board of Revenue or for the Opium Agency at Bihar. Copy of reply, the appointments are made by the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
1053. November 1856. Copy of reply to Lieutenant J Graydon, 2nd in command, 2nd Oudh Irregular Infantry. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
1054. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant P Blair, Madras Artillery, 2nd Assistant Topographical Survey, Pegu, on special duty at Calcutta. The working season having begun, the Superintendent of the Pegu Survey wishes him to return; but he cannot complete the Pagoda before the next steamer; may he leave the work now and return in May or Jun. Asks about his salary and for an interview. Copies of 2 replies to Blair about this and 2 other papers. See also 946, 1165, 2418.
1055. October to November 1856. Letter from Captain John Fendall, 17th Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Jalundhur. Asks that the rule about staff employment of captains may be relaxed in his case, as remand to his regiment would be ruinous to him. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, in his case his fears have been groundless, as he will see in the last Gazette.
1057. October to November 1856. Letter from Captain De S Barrow, 14th Madras Native Infantry, Bellary. Asks for a staff appointment, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, application noted.
1058. October to November 1856. Letter from Sir H M Lawrence K C B, Governor General's Agent, Rajputana, Mount Aboo. In reply, no substitute will be needed in place of Captain Oldfield. Copy of earlier letter, as Captain Oldfield, Officiating Assistant, has temporarily rejoined his regiment does Sir Henry require a substitute?
1059. November 1856. Letter from Mr H G Keene, Superintendent of Dehra Dun, Mussoorie. Replies about the importation to England of Himalayan game birds. Copy of earlier letter to him. 1060. November 1856. Letter from Mr W Bonnaud, Head Accountant in the Account and Audit branch of the Public Works Department, Calcutta. Applies for any uncovenanted appointment that may be created under the Government of India. Copy of reply, application noted, appointment, unlikely. See also 2621, 4846, 4836, 7708, 7746.

1063. November 1856. Letter from Mr J H De Sallis, Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company's Agent, Calcutta. Asks for an audience to ask for employment under the Government, of India.
1064. October to November 1856. Letter from Captain C S Taylor, 35th Madras Native Infantry, Cannanore. Asks for an appointment in the Mysore Commission. Also note from Major Bouverie. See also 1325, 1886, 6636.
1065. November 1856. Letter from Captain J Woodley, Superintendent State Yacht Establishment, Calcutta. Reports appointment of new Serang of the state pinnace 'Sonamooky'. Copy of reply, approved.
1066. November 1856. Letter from Mr H Piddington, Coroner of Calcutta. States that Mr D Panioty was summoned by mistake, and he will take care that he is not summoned again in his juries. Copy of earlier letter, Private Secretary complaining that the Head Clerk of his office has been summoned to sit on a jury.
1067. November 1856. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of the Park, Barrackpore. Reports on the state of the Park.
1067a. November 1856. Letter from Isaac Panda, native Christian, Mirzapore, Calcutta. Asks for some employment, with testimonial. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not distribute appointments in the Public Offices.
1068. October to November 1856. Letter from the Reverent J K Stuart, Assistant Chaplain, Futtehpore. Has been put to great inconvenience by being robbed, and asks for time to prosecute. Note from Mr Edmonstone. Copy of reply, if he cannot complete his enquiries within a certain time, he should apply to the Archdeacon for leave. See also 1153.
1069. October to November 1856. Letter from Major G W Hamilton, 34th Native Infantry, Commissioner and Superintendent, Mooltan Division. Encloses letter for the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.

1070. October to November 1856. Letter from the Honourable A Eden, Calcutta. Sends charts of Mauritius (not enclosed). Also memorandum about these. See also 1032.
1071. November 1856. Letter from Isson Chunder Bissus. Asks for a letter of recommendation that he may obtain the vacant Nazarship in the Monsiff 's Court at Sooksagur.
1072. October to November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant H G Raverty, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, under suspension, Mooltan. Asks for the return for revision of the MS Pushtoo Dictionary. Copy of reply, will he acknowledge that he has understood an earlier letter of the Private Secretary, before the MS is returned. 1073. November 1856. Letter from Major T Simpson, 57th Native Infantry, Principal Assistant Commissioner of Hazaribagh. Asks to be appointed Officiating Commissioner of the South West Frontier during Mr Allen's absence. Copy of reply, apply to the Lieutenant Governor. See also 839, 847.
1074. November 1856. Letter from Mr W Vincent, Calcutta. Explains his reasons for resigning as Inspector of Post Offices in Pegu, and hopes his Lordship will accept these reasons. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not consider it necessary to give any opinion. Memorandum about Vincent's reasons for resigning.
1075. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant G A St P Fooks, Adjutant 50th Native Infantry Barrackpore. Applies for Brigade Majority at Benares; or other posts. Copy of reply, application noted.
