Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1077 to 1100, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 11 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1001 to 1100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot [appointed 1 August 1856], and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 1072, 1085, and 1091 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1076 and 1099 are missing.
1077. November 1856. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of the Barrackpore Park. States that the Park, Roads and Menagerie are in good order; two hyenas were poisoned by order of Major Bouverie.
1078. November 1856. Letter from Captain C L Showers, 14th Native Infantry, Assistant Agent to the Governor General for the States of Rajputana, Calcutta. Wishes his rough notes on Persia to be laid before the Governor General; this is not a renewed application for employment with the Expedition; if operations should be extended, he would be glad to serve. He is going to England, and intends to travel to Persia, and will thus acquire much local knowledge. Copy of acknowledgement of notes; 2 other letters about this. See also 898, 1115. 1079. November 1856. Letter from Major C Davidson, Resident at Baroda. Recommends Lieutenant Alban, Acting Assistant Resident at Baroda, for employment in any of the Contingent Forces of Hyderabad, Gwalior, Oudh, or in the Punjab Irregular Force, or in any of the Commissions, when he is unemployed at the return of Captain Battye. 1082. November 1856. Letter from Major H E L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. Forwards a copy of a map of Persia (not enclosed).
1083. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J C Hannyngton, 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with 2 objects, to assure himself that no slur had been put on him, and that the circumstances of his being passed over should not hinder his future promotion. Copy of acknowledgement. See also 1040.
1084. November 1856. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Bart, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp Jhansi. Makes recommendation for the post of Residency Surgeon at Indore. Copy of reply, the Governor General will nominate Dr J H Knapp as suggested.
1085. October to November 1856. Letter from Mr F Wilson, Hooree, near Gangootree. Replies about the importation of Himalayan game birds to England. Copy of reply; copy of earlier letter about this. 1086. September to November 1856. Letter from Dr E E Lloyd, Assistant Surgeon, in medical charge of the Artillery, stationed at Penang. Asks for the civil Assistant Surgeoncy at Penang. Copy of reply, the Governor of the Straits Settlements will nominate this appointment. See also 1019, 1094.
1087. September to November 1856. Letter from Dr A Campbell M D, Superintendent of Darjeeling, on leave, Hastings, England. Expects to return to Darjeeling in May, his health having improved; would like a post in Nepal, if a vacancy occurs. See also 1939, 3944.
1088. June to November 1856. Letter from the Reverend L P Thomas, Liverpool. On behalf of his brother Major G P Thomas of 3rd Bengal European Regiment, states his services; sends a memorandum of his ancestors. Copy of reply to Major Thomas, application noted, appointment unlikely. See also 1136.
1089. November 1856. Letter from Dr J B King M D, Assistant Surgeon in medical charge, 56th Native Infantry, Camp, Bowsie. Asks to be appointed civil Assistant Surgeon at Penang. Letter of introduction from Lord Elcho [?]. Copy of reply, his services are placed at the disposal of the Governor of the Straits Settlements by the last Gazette. See also 543, 1019, 1094.

1094. November 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Calcutta. States that the medical appointments in the Straits are in the gift of the Governor of the Straits Settlements. See also 1019.
1095. August 1856. Letter from Mr W Twemlow, Inspecting Post Master Pegu Province, Rangoon. Returns thanks for his appointment as Collector of Customs at Moulmein. See also 613, 614.
1096. November 1856. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Officer, Barrackpore. Forwards an estimate for repair of buildings at Barrackpore (no longer enclosed).
1097. November 1856. Letter from Rao Krishna Rao, Ganesh Hingni, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary to pay his respects. Copy of reply, polite refusal.
1098. November 1856. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent Barrackpore Park. Submits an estimate to complete alterations about the Banyan tree near Government House, Barrackpore, proposed by Lady Canning. Copy of reply, estimates returned, work should proceed. Copy of estimate.
1100. November 1856. Letter from Ensign A W Cripps, 26th Light Infantry, Officiating Instructor and Quarter Master 40th Native Infantry, Meean Meer. Asks for civil employment in the Punjab or in the Irregular Force. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 55.
