Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1101 to 1125, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 11 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1101 to 1200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 1101, 1106, 1107, 1108, 1111, and 1115 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1117 and 1120 are missing.
1101. November 1856. Letter from Major Thuillier. Sends a list of photographic views by Mr Glynn, the photographs being sent by Colonel Waugh for presentation to Lady Canning. Copy of reply, Lady Canning is very grateful; at present there is no idea of making a Government photographer, but Mr Glynn's name will be remembered. (List and reply only).
1102. November 1856. Letter from Dr G Paton, Director General of Post Offices in India, Calcutta. Is investigating injury done to a parcel to the address of the Governor General. Copy of earlier letter, asking him to investigate; copy of further letter. See also 1209.
1103. November 1856. Letter from Dr L W Stewart, Assistant Surgeon, 42nd Madras Native Infantry, Jubbulpore. Asks to be nominated as Civil Surgeon in Cuttack. Copy of reply, apply to the Lieutenant Governor.
1104. November 1856. Letter from Captain H Dixon, 22nd Madras Native Infantry, Executive Officer, Cuttack Division, Cuttack. Applies to be Superintendent of Workshops of the new Engineering College at Calcutta; with testimonial. Copy of reply, no such post at present.
1105. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant E M Lawford, Adjutant 4th Madras Light Cavalry, Saugor. Offers the Governor General sketches of Eton and Oxford by his brother-in-law, the Reverend G R Winter (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, accepting. See also 1337.
1106. November 1856. Letter from Letter from Mr Thwaites, Superintendent, Royal Botanical Garden, Kandy. To His Excellency Sir H G Ward, with 3 other enclosures, sent on to the Governor General, about a proposal to introduce Cinchona, or medical bark, into India from South America. Because of its importance in medical treatment, it is likely to become extinct.
1107. November 1856. Letter from Mr Longueville Clarke, Calcutta. Asks the Governor General to become Patron of the Calcutta Cricket Club. Copy of reply, he will be honoured.
1108. November 1856. Letter from Mr W Tayler, Commissioner of the Patna Division, Sonepore. In reply, about the importation to England of Himalayan game birds. Copy of earlier letter about this. Telegraph Message number 40. Governor General's Book numbers 209, 210, 225. 1109. November 1856. Anonymous letter, Pooree, Achanuk. That Mr Chick, a clerk in the Marine Board Office, co-edits the 'Phoenix' Newspaper.
1110. November 1856. Letter from Major A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. Suggests Captain G Gaynor, 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers and Pay Master of Bengal Troops in Pegu, for the post of Magistrate at Dalhousie. Copy of reply, acknowledged.
1111. November 1856. Letter from Mr Charles Gubbins, Civil and Sessions Judge of Alygurh. Wishes to send the Astronomical Society of London observation records taken by Colonel Wilcox about 10 years ago when he was in charge of the Observatory at Lucknow. They were supposed to go to London long ago, when the King of Oudh subscribed £500 or £600 to have them sent to London. Copy of reply, asking for more details. See also 1162, 1176, 1374.
1112. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Sir A Bogle, Knight Commander of the Bath, Commissioner of the Tenasserim Provinces, Moulmein. About nominations for the Moulmein Magistracy. Copy of earlier letter about this. See also 792, 950.
1113. November 1856. Letter from Mr C J Pittur, Calcutta. Has a letter for the Governor General from Lady Stuart de Rothesay, and begs to know if he may present it in person. Copy of reply, please send the letter. See also 1123.
1114. November 1856. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Tounghoo. Various ideas about Burma. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Endorsed: the man must be mad. I do not imagine any answer required.
1115. November 1856. Letter from Captain C L Showers, Calcutta. Sends a memorandum on the war with Persia (3 sets of documents). Also memorandum by Private Secretary. See also 898, 1078, 1891.
1116. October to November 1856. Letter from the Honourable H B Deveraux, Judicial Commissioner, Bangalore. Replies about Lieutenant J N H McLean and Captain Bowles' Moonshee. Copy of earlier letter about this. See also 922.
1118. November 1856. Letter from Mr C S O'Reilly, Calcutta. Asks for money. Copy of reply, refused.
1119. November 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary, to the Government of India, Foreign Department. Has given permission to Mr Cawaratta and some Burmese to visit the Arsenal, and hopes the Governor General approves. Mr Spears and Mr Cawaratta have asked for an interview.
1121. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant H G Raverty, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, under suspension, Mooltan. Complains that 5 months have passed since he was first suspended.
1122. November 1856. Letter from Mrs C Judge, Calcutta. Applies for a post for her son, Lieutenant Judge. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 796, 809, 810, 812, 817, 834.
1123. November 1856. Letter from Mr C Pittar, Calcutta. Encloses a letter from Lady Stuart de Rothesay, to the Governor General (no longer enclosed). See also 1113.
1124. November 1856. Letter from Mr E J L Twynan, Akyab. Thanks the Private Secretary for his kind intention to befriend him.
1124a. November 1856. Copy of a letter to M Simonsen Esquire. The Governor General declines to authorise him to publish his concert as being under his or Lady Canning's patronage, but will take 5 tickets.
1125. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Carmichael, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of the North West Provinces, Camp, Allahabad. Asks if the Governor General has any objection to the transfer of Mr S Hogg, Assistant Commissioner of Jullundhur, from the Punjab to the North West Provinces. Copy of reply, the number of military men in the Punjab is so far in excess of civilians that Mr Hogg cannot be transferred out of the Punjab. See also 1155.
