Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1151 to 1175, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 11 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1101 to 1200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 1158, 1162, 1165, 1168, 1169, and 1175 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1167 is missing.

1152. November 1856. Letter from Colonel Sir Richmond Shakespear, Political Agent, Joudpore. Applies to be Governor General's Agent, Central India. Copy of reply, application noted, no vacancy yet. See also 465, 515.
1153. November 1856. Letter from Reverend J K Stuart, Assistant Chaplain, Cawnpore. Gives particulars of his robbery, and suggests safe-guards for travellers and compensation by the transit company. See also 1068.
1154. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant W A Kerr, Assistant Southern Maharatta Irregular Horse, Kalludgee. Asks for promotion in another regiment of Irregular Cavalry; addressed to Lady Canning. 1 anna stamp. Copy of reply, Lady Canning never interferes in the disposal of appointments. See also 1290.
1155. November 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Carmichael, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor, North West Provinces, Bareilly. Encloses a letter from Mr Hogg, who requests permission to withdraw his application for transfer to the North West Provinces. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 1125.

1157. November 1856. Letter from Mr T P Manuel, teacher in the Patna School. Asks for the Private Secretary's patronage for his book. See also 335.
1158. November 1856. Letter from Mrs Power, wife of Captain B H Power, Judge Advocate General, Kamptee. Asks that her husband may receive an answer to his appeal. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary will do what he can. See also 545, 549,1859a.
1159. November 1856. Letter from the Reverend J Boaz, Honourable Secretary to the Calcutta Seamen's Friend Society. Forwards a letter asking for the Governor General's patronage. Copy of reply, asking for a report or prospectus. See also 1166, 2626, 2689, 4303, 7230.
1160. November to December 1856. Letter from Major J Johnstone, Deputy Commissioner, Hyderabad, under suspension, Hingolee. Has been suspended for 7 months, but has had no charge preferred against him. See also 822, 1324.
1161. November to December 1856. Letter from Dr T Anderson M D, Assistant Surgeon 7th Oude Irregular Infantry, Monsa Bagh, near Lucknow. Offers his services in connection with the proposed introduction of Chinchona [cinchona], he was the originator of the idea. Copy of reply, application noted.
1162. November 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Mr C Gubbins, Civil Service, Ally Gurh. About the transmission of astronomical observations of Colonel Wilcox to London. Copy of reply of December, acknowledgement. Copy of further reply of January 1857, the Governor General is not willing to allow the removal of the documents, but will allow Mr Gubbins to make copies. 1164. November to December 1856. Letter from Hussun Rezah Khan, late Teshildar of Talgram Zillah Furracabad, Lucknow. Asks for an appointment in Oudh. Testimonials. Copy of reply, apply to local authorities.

1165. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant G Blair, Madras Artillery, 2nd Assistant Topographical Survey, Pegu, on special duty at Calcutta. Asks for orders on the subject of moving the Engineers' bell to the Auckland Gardens. Note, the bell not to be moved. Copy of Telegraph Message to this effect. See also 946, 1054, 2418.
1166. December 1856. Letter from the Reverend J Boaz, Honourable Secretary to the Calcutta Seamen's Friend Society, Calcutta. Sends a copy of the Society's Annual Report. Copy of reply, sending 100 Rupees donation. See also 1159, 2626, 2689, 4303, 7230.
1168. November to December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Sir H M Lawrence, Knight Commander of the Order of Bath, Governor General's Agent for Rajputana, Mount Aboo. Would like another Assistant in place of Lieutenant Walters, but could manage without one until Captain Showers and Lieutenant Mildmay join. Recommends Lieutenant Black, 69th Native Infantry and Adjutant of the Jodhpur Legion in place of Captain Sewell, if there is to be a replacement. Copies of 2 letters about these vacancies.
1169. November to December 1856. Letter from Captain W E Hay, Assistant Commissioner, Kooloo. Replies about Himalayan game birds for importation to England. Copy of reply about this. 1172. December 1856. Letter from Mr J Crawford, Retired Conductor, Public Works Department, Serampore. Asks for a proper investigation into his case. Copy of reply. Any further representations must be addressed to the Governor General in Council through the Secretary to the Government, Public Works Department. Also copy of earlier reply. 1175. November to December 1856. Letter from Colonel C E Faber, Chief Engineer Public Works Department and Commandant of Engineers, Fort St. George. Submits the 4th volume of professional papers of the Corps of Madras Engineers (not enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
