Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1176 to 1200, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 11 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1101 to 1200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 1176, 1195, and 1196 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1197 is missing.
1176. December 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary, to the Government of India, Foreign Department. Forwards Mr Wilson's reply about the alleged grant from the King of Oudh towards the collection and publication of Colonel Wilcox's observations at Lucknow. Copy of letter about this from Mr Cooper. 1178. December 1856. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Hooghly. Asks for justice and restoration to the public service. Copy of reply, apply to the Home Office. See also 179, 193, 316, 343, 1177, 1235.
1179. November to December 1856. Letter from Mr Alexander Shepherd, Bengal Cavalry, Cawnpore
Returns thanks to the Governor General for his notice of his visit. Copy of earlier letter. The Governor General has seen Shepherd's letter and card; he regrets he was not able to receive Mr Shepherd. Governor General's Book No. 226.

1181. December 1856. Letter from Mahomed Dim, Calcutta. Asks for the Governor General's aid towards his admission to the Madrissa College. Copy of reply, refused.
1182. December 1856. Letter from Major R Ouseley, Retired List, Calcutta. Asks for an audience. Copy of reply. Governor General will judge upon the petition Ouseley is to send. See also 744, 1183.
1183. December 1856. Letter from Major R Ouseley, Retired List, Calcutta. Explains he wished an interview to ask for employment; perhaps he might have an audience of the Private Secretary. Copy of reply, no employment available. See also 744, 1182.
1184. December 1856. Letter from Mr J Crawford, Retired Conductor, Public Works Department, Serampore. Asks to correct a mistake in a previous letter. See also 388, 432, 466, 1142, 1172, 1278, 1520.
1185. December 1856. Letter from Mr W Ritchie, Judge Advocate General, Calcutta. Replies about the Memorial of the Etonians. Copy of circular, asking for subscriptions to erect a memorial to Etonians who fell in the late war, which is to be a painted glass window in Eton chapel, with a list of names on the south wall. 4 other papers about this. 1186. December 1856. Letter from Martin Simonsen, Calcutta. Asks Lady Canning's patronage of a concert. Copy of reply, declined.
1187. November to December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Hamilton Forbes, 1st Light Cavalry, Lucknow. Asks for staff appointment. Copies of 3 letters to Forbes. See also 800.
1188. November to December 1856. Letter from Captain D S Dodgson, Brigade Major, Benares.
Asks the Private Secretary to use his influence to get him the appointment of Pay Master at Cawnpore. Copy of reply, Private Secretary cannot interfere in a military appointment. Governor General's Book No. 193.
1189. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel W S Menteath, 69th Native Infantry, Calcutta.
Asks for some appointment in Calcutta, he has applied for the Town Majorship. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
1190. December 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. Sends the last report from Major Phayre about Dalhousie, and the orders upon it (no longer enclosed). Endorsed: forwarded to Mr Dudley Smith. See also 1203.
1191. November to December 1856. Letter from Surborunjun Mookerjea, Colootollah. Offers to marry a Hindu widow. He hears that the Governor General will give a title of Rajah Bahadoor and 10,000 Rupees to anyone so doing.
1192. December 1856. Memorandum from Major Bouverie, Military Secretary. Asking Private Secretary to note the name of Captain Ryan, 20th Native Infantry for civil employment.
1193. November to December 1856. Letter from Captain J G B Griffin, 3rd Madras European Regiment, Secunderabad. Asks to be employed either in the Hyderabad Contingent or Commission. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 524, 675, 853.
1194. November to December 1856. Letter from the Proprietor of the 'Purshoo' journal, Jumkhundee in South Maharatta Country. Submits a prospectus and copy of his journal, and asks if the Governor General would become an honorary subscriber. Copy of reply, the Governor General will take 1 copy. See also 6191.
1195. November to December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant H G Raverty, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Mooltan. Fully understood the earlier letter to him, and will not dedicate the Pushtoo dictionary to the Governor General while there is a stain on his character. Copies of 2 earlier letters to Raverty.
