Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1200 to 1225, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 13 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1201 to 1300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 1203, 1218, and 1219 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1202 and 1206 are missing.
1201. December 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. Forwards the Durbar Accounts for October and November (no longer enclosed).
1203. December 1856. Letter from Mr Dudley-Smith, of the firm of Messrs Jardine Skinner and Company, Calcutta. Returns with thanks the papers concerning the town of Dalhousie, and would like to be allowed to communicate to the Executors of the late Mr Armitage the information about the site of the new town. See also 1190.
1204. December 1856. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Governor of India, Foreign Department. Asks the Private Secretary to circulate his notes begging any member of Council who has the Tanjore Papers to return them immediately.
1205. December 1856. Letter from Colonel R J H Birch, C B, Secretary to the Government of India, Military Department. About a woman claiming benefit from the estate of the late Major Brown, 69th Native Infantry.
1207. December 1856. Letter from the Reverend Thomas Boaz, Honorary Secretary to the Calcutta Seamen's Friend Society. Acknowledges the Governor General's donation. See also 1159, 1166.
1208. November 1856. Letter from Dr R de C Peele, Officiating Private Secretary to the Governor of Bombay, Matharun. Will forward Governor General's letter; Lord Dunkellin's last letters went by the 'Bombay'.
1209. December 1856. Letter from Dr G Paton, Director General of Post Offices in India. Submits papers in explanation of the injury done to a parcel sent to the Governor General. Copy of reply, and 2 earlier letters about this. See also 1102.
1210. December 1856. Letter from Mr H Ronaldson, Assistant in the Bengal Secretariat Office, Calcutta. Forwards copies of testimonials. Copy of earlier acknowledgement. See also 1199.
1211. November to December 1856. Letter from the Honourable H B Devereux, Judicial Commissioner, Bangalore. Forwards a letter from Captain Battye (no longer enclosed); Devereux is still sent 'Home News' which is intended for the Private Secretary. See also 1213.
1212. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant E C Impey, 5th Native Infantry, Amballa. Returns thanks for his appointment in Rajputana. Copy of earlier letter, notifying him of this appointment.
1213. December 1856. Letter from Captain M Battye, Brighton, England. Returns thanks for his extension of leave. Copy of reply, the Governor General wishes him to join his station immediately on arriving at Bombay. Telegraph Message sent number 68, 71, 73. 1214. December 1856. Copy of reply to Dr T Wilson, M D, Residency Surgeon. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
1214a. December 1856. Copy of a letter to the Private Secretary to the Right Honourable the Governor of Bombay. Asking him to send on the enclosed to Lord Dunkellin.
1215. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant T E Kennion, Artillery, Dum Dum. Returns thanks for the Private Secretary's letter, intimating that his name would be submitted to the Governor General. Copy of earlier letter to Kennion. See also 1369, 3026.
1216. December 1856. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Deputy Post Master General, Calcutta. Asks Lord and Lady Canning to a cricket match. Copy of reply, they much regret they will not be able to come.
1217. December 1856. Letter from Dr J Ewart, M D, Civil Assistant Surgeon, Ajmere. Asks to be Residency Surgeon of Indore. Copy of reply, the appointment has been filled up.
1218. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J N B Hewett, 12th Native Infantry, Goruckpore. Is anxious to get married, and in the absence of his surviving parent in England asks the Governor General's permission. Copy of reply, apply to parent in England. See also 1219.
1219. December 1856. Letter from Colonel R J H Birch, Companion of the Order of the Bath, Calcutta. Sends a copy of the Registrar's reply about rules regarding the marriage of minors in the Army. See also 1218.
1220. December 1856. Letter from Captain John Kendall, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Jullundhur. Returns thanks for the letter intimating that his promotion to a Captain would not make his remand to his Regiment necessary. See also 1055.
1221. December 1856. Letter from Madame Blanche, Calcutta. About tickets for her concert.
1222. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H M Durand, Superintendent Engineer, Calcutta. Forwards papers and volumes relative to Persia, for submission to the Governor General. (not enclosed) See also 1298.
1223. December 1856. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Deputy Post Master General, Calcutta. Replies about the Barrackpore Post Office. See also 1239.
1224. December 1856. Letter from Major L H Hamilton, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor, Allipore. Acknowledges receipt of Bootan papers.
1225. December 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India, Home Department. States that the previous week 2 Bills were assented to by the Governor General and forwarded direct to the Legislative Council instead of to the Home Department, and begs that the Private Secretary will have this erroneous practice set right.
