Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1225 to 1250, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 13 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1201 to 1300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, a brief summary of the letter and a note of any enclosures. Numbers 1230 and 1237 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1232 and 1242 are missing.

1228. December 1856. Letter from Dawmoo Dass Bearah, Banca Poker with 24th Pergunnahs. States the substance of a dream.
1229. December 1856. Letter from Mr E P Moore, Calcutta. Sends a letter asking the Governor General to become Patron of a Regatta Club, with prospectus. Copy of reply, declining. Also draft reply.
1230. December 1856. Letter from Captain C L Showers, Assistant to Governor General's Agent for Rajputana, Calcutta. Asks to be sent to the Persian Gulf to investigate the possibilities of raising an auxiliary force there. Copy of reply, refused.
1231. December 1856. Letter from Major S C Macpherson, Political Agent, Gwalior. Applies to officiate for Sir Robert Hamilton while he is on leave. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 236, 1712.
1233. December 1856. Letter from Syed Ubdubmyed Suffvee, Prince of Damascus, at Dugshai. Offers his services for employment in Persia as a spy. 2 letters, copy of reply, declined.
1234. December 1856. Letter from Major H L Thuillier. Asks for the return of some books lent to the Governor General on Persia and Beloochistan. Copy of request for the return of these books by the Librarian of the Asiatic Society.
1235. December 1856. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Hooghly. Asks for a reply to his Memorial to the Court; wishes to be a Joint Magistrate, a post now open to uncovenanted officers. Copy of reply, apply to the Government of Bengal. See also 179, 193, 316, 343, 1177, 1178.
1236. December 1856. Letter from Martin Simonsen, Calcutta. Asks Lady Canning to subscribe to his last concert. Endorsed: answered privately.
1237. December 1856. Letter from Dr J Leckie, Surgeon to the Right Honourable the Governor General, Barrackpore. About the appointment of Senior Surgeon in the Straits Settlement.
1238. December 1856. Letter from Mr A A Roberts, Commissioner in the Punjab, Lahore Division, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to remain in Calcutta until Mrs Roberts embarks for England, and asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, both granted.
1239. December 1856. Letter from Dr G Paton, Officiating Director General of Post Offices in India, Calcutta. With a note from the Post Master of Barrackpore stating the arrangements made for the future dispatch of the Governor General's Dak from that Post Office. See also 1223.
1240. November to December 1856. Letter from Dr H P Williams, Civil Assistant Surgeon, Tipperah. Asks to be Civil Assistant Surgeon at Penang. Also application by Surgeon W Brydon, Calcutta, for the medical appointment at Singapore. Letter from Major Bouverie about these. See also 1045, 1019, 1094.
1241. October 1856. Letter from Mr Charles A Saunders, Great Western Railway, Paddington. Recommends his son Charles B Saunders.
1243. 1856. Memorandum. That the Reverend G W Coopland is recommended by Miss Chaunce.
1243a. December 1856. Copy of a letter to Lieutenant E P Gurdon, 33rd Native Infantry. The Governor General has received Lord Wodehouse's letter on his behalf, but has no time to grant him an interview. Governor General's Book number 246.
1244. 1856. Memorandum. That Mr Cooke is recommended by the Marchioness of Waterford.
1245. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H M Durand, Officiating Superintending Engineer, 1st Circle Lower Provinces, Calcutta. Offers himself as Officiating Resident at Indore, during Sir Robert Hamilton's leave. Memorandum of his services. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 34, 312, 374, 1644.
1246. December 1856. Copy of reply to Captain C Smith, 2nd Madras European Regiment, Assistant to the Agent to the Governor General, Fort St George. His application for the command of one of the Irregular Corps in Bengal has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
1247. December 1856. Copy of reply to Mr C Fordyce, Deputy Registrar, Government Agents Office. His Memorial has been transferred to the Financial Secretary.
1248. December 1856. Letter from Lalla Sunker Dutt, Calcutta. Asks to be informed of the result of a Memorial sent in Sept 1855. Copy of reply, the result is not known, owing to the old records of Private Secretary's office having been destroyed previous to his assumption of office.
1249. December 1856. Letter from Ram Taran Gossain, Shambazar. Sends a Memorial from certain canal trading merchants. Copy of reply, Memorial transferred to Home Office.
1250. December 1856. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, Civil Auditor, Fort William. Forwards a list of the fixed establishments under the Government of Bengal as they stood on 1 May, 1856 (no longer enclosed).
