Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1251 to 1275, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 13 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1201 to 1300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1251, 1252, 1253, 1265, 1267, 1270, and 1271 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1255 is missing.
1251. December 1856. Letter from Mr Frederick Wilson, Choungullah. In reply to a letter restricting his expenses on account of the capture of monals and the birds for London, encloses a statement of expenses already incurred, and asks for instructions about the transfer of the birds. 1252. November to December 1856. Letter from Mr J Finch, Oudh. Exposes the misdoings of the uncovenanted Heads of Public Offices in the North Western Provinces, Oudh and the Punjab, and suggests a remedy. Two letters. Note about this. Two 1/2 anna stamps. See also 1269, 1279.
1253. December 1856. Letter from Mr J S Judge, Attorney at Law, Calcutta. About a proposed new town and port on the Mutlah. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
1254. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant E Wyld, 3rd Madras European Regiment, Calcutta. Encloses a letter of recommendation from Lord Lindsay (no longer enclosed), and asks for employment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1264, 1309.
1256. October to December 1856. Letter from the Reverend Thomas James, England. Recommends his brother Captain H C James, 32nd Native Infantry, Officiating Superintendent of Darjeeling, and his nephew Mr Stanley Sutherland, 42nd Native Infantry.
1257. December 1856. Letter from Captain W McNeile, 5th Native Infantry, Umballa.
Asks to be restored to his civil appointment in the Punjab Commission, as Major Birch's retirement and subsequent promotions will reduce the number of absentee captains.

1259. December 1856. Letter from Dr R B Kinsey, Surgeon, 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers, Umballa.
Asks to be appointed Principal of the Medical College. Copy of reply, apply to Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
1260. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant H L Millett, 28th Native Infantry, Adjutant 1st Punjab Cavalry, Dehra Ghazee Khan. Returns thanks for his appointment.
1260a. December 1856. Copy of reply to the Admiralty Agent, Peninsular and Oriental Steamer 'Hindoostan'. Asking him to post some letters in Madras or Point de Galle.
1261. December 1856. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, Civil Auditor, Fort William. Forwards a list of the fixed establishments of the General and Marine Branches under the Government of India (no longer enclosed).
1262. December 1856. Letter from Mr S Wauchope, Calcutta. Asks for 5 tickets for the Legislative Council.
1263. December 1856. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Calcutta. Replies about Abdul Rohoman, a candidate for a situation in the Surveyor General's Office.
1264. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant B Wyld, 3rd Madras European Regiment, Calcutta.
Wishes to know if he should apply for extension of leave, on the possibility of being given employment before he leaves Calcutta. Copy of reply, employment unlikely, not to apply for extension. See also 1254, 1309.
1265. November to December 1856. Letter from Mr W H Sitwell, England. Recommends his son, Ensign F H M Sitwell, 31st Native Infantry. See also 639, 1130.
1266. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant J Black, 2nd Bombay Grenadiers, 1st class Assistant Commissioner Oudh, Mahoundee, Lucknow. Wishes to resign his appointment and rejoin his regiment. Copy of reply, accepted on the usual official application. See also 944, 1029.
