Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1276 to 1300, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally contained in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 13 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1201 to 1300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1276, 1277, 1279, and 1283 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1280, 1284, 1285 and 1290 are missing.
1276. December 1856. Letter from Dr F P Strong, Surgeon to the Mysore Princes, Calcutta. Applies for a pension after 41 years continuous service. Copy of reply, acknowledgement; copy of Dr Leckie's opinion. Memorandum by Private Secretary. See also 1536, 1572, 1593.
1277. December 1856. Letter from Baboo Heerallol Seal. Sends a petition from certain Calcutta ratepayers asking for the publication of the Municipal Bill as amended, before it becomes law. Memorandum about this. Copy of reply, the Bill has already passed 3 readings.
1278. December 1856. Letter from Mr J Crawford, late Conductor, Public Works Department, Serampore. Asks the Governor General to read his Memorial, and give him justice. Copy of reply, the Governor General will read his documents. See also 388, 432, 466, 1142, 1172, 1184, 1520.
1279. December 1856. Letter from Mr J Pinch. Brings further charges of lax supervision of uncovenanted officers. See also 1252, 1269.

1282. December 1856. Letter from Dr R de C Peele, Officiating Private Secretary to the Governor of Bombay. Sends 3 notes about Mrs Warkins. Copy of earlier letter asking for information about Mrs Warkins. See also 1327.

1286. December 1856. Letter from Captain J J Hamilton, 2nd Bengal Grenadiers and Assistant Commissioner 1st class Hyderabad Assigned Districts, Ellichpore. Has heard that the Government contemplates taking Goa, and asks to be considered a candidate for a Deputy Commissionership either there or anywhere else. Note from Major Bouverie.
1287. December 1856. Letter from Mr C Gardener, Calcutta. Asks for an appointment under the new Municipal Act for levying rates and taxes in Calcutta. 1 Copy of reply, apply to Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
1288. December 1856. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Hooghly. Asks for the return of some papers. Copy of reply, returning papers. See also 1275.
1289. December 1856. Letter from Captain E I Ryan, 20th Native Infantry, Calcutta. Has seen in the Gazette his appointment as Assistant Commissioner in the Tenasserim Provinces vice Mr Nicolson removed, and trusts he is intended to be 1st Commissioner as otherwise he will have to enter the Commission under 3 officers much his junior. Copies of 2 letters to Ryan, he is to be 1st Assistant; copy of a note from Edmonstone, that the Governor General must be asked, as Bogle is very difficult. See also 1383.
1291. December 1856. Letter from Dr W Martin, Surgeon, Superintendent, Calcutta Eye Infirmary and Professor of Ophthalmic Surgery, Calcutta Medical College. Asks for leave, it being absolutely necessary he go to Europe. Copy of reply, the Governor General will only appoint an officer temporarily in his place. See also 1291.1/2, 1418, 1433.
1291a. December 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India, Home Department. Replies about Dr Martin's application for leave with retention of appointment. See also 1291, 1418, 1433.
1292. December 1856. Letter from Captain G Faithful, Principal Assistant to the Commissioner of Arracan. Applies for either of the vacancies in Rangoon or Hossein. Copy of reply, application noted.
1293. December 1856. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Deputy Post Master General of Bengal, Calcutta.

1296. December 1856. Letter from Mr L A Emanuel, Calcutta. Asks for the patronage of Lady Canning for his concert. Copy of reply, declined.
1296a. December 1856. Copy of a letter to Mr Stuart Bayley, Civil Service. Asking him to call to hear the decision taken about the ball for Mrs Halliday.
1297. December 1856. Letter from Mr E Blyth, Calcutta. Hopes that the Governor General did not consider the price 2,000 Rupees that he asked for 3 tigers exorbitant, and states reasons for the sum; will wait on the Private Secretary to know the result of his application. Copies of 3 letters, the Governor General has abandoned his intention of purchasing tigers for the menagerie at Barrackpore.
1298. December 1856. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H M Durand, Superintending Engineer, Lower Provinces, Calcutta. Sends some papers about Persia (no longer enclosed). See also 1222.
