Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1301 to 1318, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 14 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1301 to 1400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1307, 1315, 1316 and 1318 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1303 is missing.

1304. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Secretary to the Government of Bombay, to Secretary to Government of India, Foreign Department. By an oversight a telegraphic message has been sent to the Foreign Department which was intended for the Private Secretary, about the appointment of Lieutenant General Sir J Outram to the command of the Persian Gulf Expedition.
1305. January 1857. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Hooghly. Applies to be extra Assistant in Oudh. Copy of reply, refused.

1306. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant B C Hitchins, Madras Artillery, Saugor.
Renews his application for an appointment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1046, 1509.
1307. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Mr Baba Padmanji, Bombay. Asks for the Governor General's patronage for his work 'The Wanderings of Yamunabai' (about the re-marriage of Hindu widows).
1308. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Skinder Sufvee, Prince of Damascus, from Dugshai. Renews his offer of his services as a spy in Persia, or in the capital of China, 1/2 anna stamp. See also 1233.
1309. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Wyld, 3rd Madras European Regiment Calcutta. Asks for employment outside the Public Works Department. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1254, 1264.
1310. January 1857. Letter from Major L H Hamilton, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor, Alipore. Officers are needed in the Assam Commission. Copies of 2 replies, a man will be sent as soon as possible. See also 1367, 1544.
1311. November 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Captain H Man, 49th Madras Native Infantry, Resident Councillor, Malacca. Has heard he is to organise the convict establishment at Moulmein, and returns thanks. Draft reply about this. See also 1312, 1246, 1682, 1663, 1684.
1312. November 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Captain H Man, 49th Madras Native Infantry, Resident Councillor, Malacca. Complains of supersession by the appointment of Mr H S Mackenzie, Assistant Resident at Penang, to the office of Resident Councillor at Singapore. Copy of reply, the appointment was made by the Governor of the Straits Settlements. See also 1311, 1426, 1682, 1683, 1684.
1314. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Mrs A Rolleston, wife of Captain C C Rolleston, Her Majesty's 84th Foot, Rangoon. Asks for the Private Secretary's interest to get the appointment of Superintendent of the Powder Works at Ishapore for Captain G S Voyle, Bengal Artillery and Commissary of Ordnance at Bursa. Copy of reply, application transferred to Military Secretary. See also 1313.

1318. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Lord Harris, Madras. Recommends his cousin Cornet John Campbell Erskine Macnabb who has just come out from England to join the Bengal Cavalry.
