Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1320 to 1350, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 14 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1301 to 1400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1334, 1338, and 1350 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1328, 1330, 1340, and 1349 are missing.

1322. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Major A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. In reply, will do his best for Captain Wright, nothing at present. 1323. January 1857. Letter from Baboo Ram Chund Mullick, Calcutta. Asks to be made Commissioner for the Improvement of the Town of Calcutta. Copy of reply, apply to Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. See also 6.
1324. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Major J Johnstone, Deputy Commissioner of Hyderabad, under suspension, Hingolee. Submits a copy of his previous request for an investigation of his case. Now 9 months since he was suspended, he has received no pay. See also 322, 1160.

Replies about Captain C E Taylor, 35th Madras Native Infantry. Copy of earlier letter of Private Secretary recommending Taylor. See also 1064, 1886, 6636.
1326. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from General Sir M Cubbon K C B, Nundydroog.
Has made an official report of the death of Major Gustard, Superintendent of Coorg; recommends Captain Martin, Junior Assistant in the Mysore Commission to succeed him. Copy of reply about this. See also 1458.
1327. October 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Mr James Des Candeville, Guernsey. Asks for the address of Mrs Widow Warkin, a pensioner under the Bombay Government. Copy of reply, no such person on the list of pensioners. See also 1282.
1329. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel G St P Lawrence, Political Agent, Meywar. Sends a recommendation for Captain J C Brooke, 63rd Native Infantry, 1st Assistant to the Political Agent in Meywar, who wishes to be Acting Political Agent in Meywar, should Colonel G Lawrence be sent to act for Sir Henry Lawrence in Rajputana; also sends a letter from Dr J Ewart, Civil Assistant Surgeon, Ajmere, applying for medical charge of the Meywar Bheel Corps. Copy of reply, Captain Showers is to be appointed to Meywar; Dr Ewart's application transferred to the Military Secretary. See also 1330, 1332.
1331. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Captain W R Campbell, 28th Madras Native Infantry, 2nd Assistant Resident, Hyderabad, Bolarum. Asks to be appointed Acting 1st Assistant Resident. Copy of reply, the vacancy is not to be filled.
1332. December 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Captain J G Brooke, 63rd Native Infantry, 1st Assistant to the Political Agent in Meywar, Commandant Meywar Bheel Corps, Kherwarah. Asks to be Officiating Political Agent, Meywar. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, refused. Memorandum by Private Secretary. See also 1329.
1333. January 1857. Letter from Mr W Retmire, Calcutta, who came to India as Quarter Master of the Screw Ship 'Coromandel' and will return on the 'Lady Kenaway'. Wishes to see Lord and Lady Canning. Copy of reply, application granted.
1334. January 1857. Letter from Mr J S A H Byrne, Calcutta. Asks for aid; submits a brief narrative of the adventures of an Indian hero, and a copy of his credentials. Copy of reply, aid refused. See also 1351.
1335. January 1857. Letter from Captain R Doria, 28th Madras Native Infantry, Bombay. Does not question the justice of the sentence passed upon him, hopes he will be employed on his return from England. Copy of reply, punishment will not debar him from employment. See also 854, 886, 1010, 5261.
1336. January 1857. Letter from Mr O W Malet, Judge of Beerbhoom, Soorie. Asks to be made Resident at Hyderabad or, if Sir R Hamilton be promoted, Governor General's Agent for Central India. Copy of reply, application noted.
1337. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant E M Lawford, Adjutant 4th Madras Light Cavalry, Saugor. Asks if the sketches of Eton and Oxford he sent to Lady Canning arrived in good order. Copy of reply, arrived safely. See also 1105.
1338. January 1857. Letter from Mr H G Keene, Superintendent of Dehra Dun. Reports that he now has about 24 birds all doing well, which with any that the Rajah of Gurlwal May be able to collect will be sent off by boat. Copy of reply, the Governor General entirely approves. 1339. January 1857. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Hooghly. Asks to be appointed Superintendent of the Salt Golah in the Mutlah, a new appointment. Copy of reply, apply to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
1341. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant E Clerk, 4th Madras Light Cavalry, 2nd class Deputy Commissioner Saugor and Nerbudda territories, Calcutta. Asks for another appointment, preferably in Oudh, as his health has suffered in Saugor; with testimonial. Copy of reply, application noted. Governor General's Book number 417, See also 1825.

Has sent a message about Lieutenant Johnstone, and Captain Beatson to proceed to Bombay; Captain Young has not yet returned from leave. Copy of note about this, and the Bushire Gazette.
1345. November 1856 to January 1857. Letter from Mr J E Evans, London. Recommends Dr W Crozier civil surgeon at Jubbulpore. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
1346. January 1857. Letter from Captain S R Tickell, 31st Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, on leave, Calcutta. Will send 20 Rupees and the Private Secretary's note to Captain Crewe by the next steamer to Moulmein.
1347. January 1857. Letter from Mr G W Kellner, Chief Assistant to the Financial Secretary, Calcutta. Has been assured by Dr Paton that he has no objection to his officiating for Mr Dove, but Paton considers Mr Garrett, Post Master at Agra, had a better claim. See also 1293, 1294, 1300.
1348. January 1857. Letter from Mr G F Harvey, Commissioner and Agent of Lieutenant Governor, Agra. Asks to be appointed as Officiating Agent to the Governor General in Central India. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 210.
1350. January 1857. Letter from Messrs Allan Deffell and Company, Merchants, Calcutta. Will communicate with Mr Thomson, the representative of the Zoological Society of London, about arrangements made for the Himalayan birds. Copy of earlier reply about this. Telegraph Message No. 40.
