Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1376 to 1400, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 14 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1301 to 1400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter.
1376. January 1857. Copy of reply to G Plowden Esquire. His arrangements will be approved via the Military Secretary.
1377. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant B Wyld, 3rd Madras Europeans, Calcutta. The departure of the steamer being very close, begs to know if he has any chance of the vacancy in Assam. Copy of reply, no promises can be made, he is unlikely to be appointed to Assam.
1378. January 1857. Letter from Mr Ali Ben Son Alle, Calcutta. Asks for the Governor General's patronage for his last concert. Copy of reply, refused.
1378a. January 1857. Copy of reply to Pierce Taylor Esquire. The Governor General has no time to grant him an interview, he should state his business in writing. See also 1405a
1379. January 1857. Letter from Major W Anderson, Political Superintendent Serohi, Erinpoorah. Encloses a letter for the Governor General (no longer enclosed) Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
1380. January 1857. Letter from Major J H Bell, Officiating Mint Master, Fort William. About a statement sent to the Governor General in an envelope mistakenly headed 'for Overland Dispatch', copy of earlier letter about this.
1381. January 1857. Letter from Mr Robert Cameron, Calcutta. Asks for a note of introduction to Colonel G Ramsay, at Katmandu. Copy of earlier letter to Cameron, with a letter of introduction to the Officiating Chief Commissioner in Oudh; for Nepal he will have to obtain permission to travel from the authorities. Also another letter, asking for his address. See also 1374, 1424, 1483.
1382. January 1857. Letter from Mr H B Chapman, Under Secretary Home Department. Will send the papers regarding Dr Bowie. Copy of part of a despatch about Dr Bowie.
1383. December 1856. Letter from Mr Edmonstone, Secretary to Government of India, Foreign Department. About vacancies in the Tenasserim, and Lieutenant Ryan's appointment in place of Mr Nicholson at Mergui. See also 1289.
1384. January 1857. Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to the Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Has at the request of the Governor General seen Mr H Robinson, formerly stationed at Rungpore, and now Assistant Commissioner to the Magistrate of the 24th Pergunnahs, and has directed him to wait upon the Private Secretary in case the Governor General would like to see him.
1385. January 1857. Letter from Dr T Leckie, Surgeon to the Governor General. Forwards with his recommendation a note from Dr H C Brodrick, Assistant Surgeon, Madras Establishment, in medical charge of 5th Infantry, Hyderabad Contingent, asks for a civil post in Hyderabad assigned districts.
1386. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant F G Steuart, Commissariat Department, Bombay. Applies for civil employment in Nagpore. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1002.
1387. January 1857. Letter from Baboo Greedhur Bose Roy and Company, Projectors of the Vernacular Charitable School at Guranhatta. Ask for money for the School. 2 letters, Copy of reply, refused. See also 126, 171, 814.
1388. January to February 1857. Letter from Baboo Shib Chunder Shaha, Calcutta. Asks for money. Copy of reply, refused, 1/2 anna stamp. See also 1537.
1389. January 1857. Letter from Dr W White, Assistant Surgeon, late in medical charge of European and Native Depot Hospitals, Rangoon. Asks to be appointed Officiating Superintendent of the Eye Infirmary, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, vacancy filled. See also 1422.
1390. January 1857. Letter from Captain W McNeile, 5th Native Infantry, late Assistant Commissioner the Punjab, Umballa. The number of captains on detached employ from his regiment is now reduced to 2; applies for staff employment. Copy of reply, appointments in the Punjab are at present under discussion. See also 731, 1051, 1257, 1447, 1556, 1595, 1623.
1391. January 1857. Copy of reply to Mr J R Grindall, Calcutta. His application has been transferred to the Home Secretary.
1392. January 1857. Letter from Mr G Campbell, Officiating Commissioner Cis-Sutlej States, Camp, via Umballa. Asks for a post under the Government of India. Copy of reply, the Governor General appreciates his services, application noted.
1393. January 1857. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Hooghly. About his application for a Deputy Magistracy, Bengal. Copy of reply, apply to the Home Secretary.
1394. November to December 1856. Letter from Dr P P Bellew, Civil Assistant Surgeon of Mymensingh. Renews his application for the Residency Surgeoncy at Indore. See also 911, 912, 923, 942, 1061.
1395. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant B Wyld, Calcutta. Would gladly enter at the bottom of the Mysore Commission.
