‘No. 15 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 1401 to 1425a

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1401 to 1425a, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 15 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1401 to 1500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1401, 1407, 1412, 1421, 1422, and 1424 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1409, 1410 and 1414 are missing.
1401. December to January 1857. Letter from Mr H L Anderson, Secretary to the Government of Bombay. Acknowledges the receipt of a telegraphic message from the Private Secretary asking if the Government of Bombay had received any intimation of the appointment of Sir James Outram to command the Persian Expedition, and if so, on what terms. Anderson replies, Outram has been appointed to the command of the Persian Gulf Expedition with the rank of Lieutenant General and with full diplomatic powers from the Queen. Extended operations are ordered, including the occupation of Shuster. Secret.
1402. January 1857. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Calcutta. Asks for a ticket of admission to the Legislative Council.
1403. January 1857. Letter from Mr C H Hamilton, Calcutta. Asks for further relief from the Governor General. Copy of reply, sending 50 Rupees. See also 1427, 696, 840, 870, 899.
1404. January 1857. Letter from Mr J S Judge, Attorney at Law, Calcutta. Returns thanks for the Private Secretary's note that his son, Lieutenant S A T Judge will be mentioned to the Governor General to be made Officiating Junior Assistant to the Commissioner of Assam. Telegraph Message Number 28. See also 796, 809, 810, 812, 817, 834, 1122.
1405. January 1857. Letter from Mr T H Lloyd, Calcutta. Asks to be Officiating Deputy Post Master General of Bengal. Copy of reply, arrangements have already been made.
1405a. January 1857. Copy of a letter to Pierce Taylor Esquire, Civil Service, Calcutta. The Governor General will be glad to see him. See also 1378a.
1406. January 1857. Letter from Mr Joseph Moss, Calcutta. Asks for a post. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, refused. See also 1459.
1407. January 1857. Letter from the Reverend R N Maddock, Mussoorie. Forwards the examination papers of his Mussoorie School, and prospectus. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
1408. January 1857. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of the Park, Barrackpore. About the deer in the Park. Copy of reply about this. See also 1421, 3443, 1497, 1538, 1868.
1411. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant J M Graham, 27 Native Infantry, Adjutant Ramghur Battalion, Chota Nagpore. Asks to be 2nd Assistant to the Commander of Ajmere. Copy of reply, the Lieutenant Governor N W Provinces appoints to political vacancies in Ajmere.
1412. c. November 1856 to February 1857. Letter from the Duke of Vallambrosa, Aden. Returns thanks for the letters of introduction to Ceylon, and gives an account of his tour.
1413. January 1857. Letter from Mr J S Judge, Attorney at law, Calcutta. Is grateful for the Private Secretary's intention to submit the name of his son, Lieutenant Judge, for civil employment, but as Lieutenant Spilsbury is not to join his regiment on account of the late augmentation, the bar to his son's removal is still in force. 1415. January 1857. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Officer, Barrackpore Division. Forwards Certificate for repairs in Barrackpore Park (no longer enclosed).
1416. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant James Emerson, 26th Native Infantry, Dinapore. States his reasons for declining the appointment of Junior Assistant to the Commissioner of Assam, and has withdrawn his application for the Barrackpore Pay Mastership. See also 1281, 1368.
1417. January 1857. Letter from Captain E J Hardcastle, 53rd Native Infantry, Assistant to Governor General's Agent, Rajpootana, Camp, via Jeypore. Asks to be Political Agent in Rajpootana. Copy of reply, application noted.
1418. January 1857. Letter from Dr W Martin, Surgeon, Superintendent Calcutta Eye Infirmary, and Professor of the Medical College, Calcutta. Asks the Governor General to support his request to the Court of Directors, asking to be re-appointed on his return from leave. Copy of reply, the Governor General can only consider the request in Council. See also 1291, 1292a, 1433.
1419. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant E L Haukin, 24th Madras Native Infantry, 2nd Assistant Civil Engineer, Public Works Department, Sircy, North Canara. Asks to be appointed to either the Mysore or Hyderabad Commission. Copy of reply, application noted.
1420. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant G A St P Fooks, 50th Native Infantry, Camp, Rajaputa near Govindpore. Declines the appointment of Junior Assistant to the Commissioner of Assam, and would like a military appointment. Copy of earlier letter, asking Fooks if he would like to be nominated to the Assam post. See also 1075.
1421. January 1857. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of Government Garden, Barrackpore. Submits a rough sketch of the proposed location of the deer, with an estimate for a fence for them. Copy of reply about this. See also 1408, 1443, 1497, 1538, 1868.
1422. January 1857. Letter from Dr W White, Civil Surgeon 24th Pergunnahs, Calcutta. Wishes to have an interview with the Governor General to submit the enclosed pamphlet on the nature and treatment of cholera. He would like a ward to be used for cholera patients only, to test his method of treatment, for 18 or 24 months, or more. Enclosed: 'Cholera, its Nature and Treatment', by William White, M R C S, Eng, etc. Calcutta, P M Cranenburgh, Military Orphan Press, 1857. (The treatment consists almost entirely of the liberal use of castor oil.) Copy of reply, he must submit his measures officially, with the recommendation of the Medical Board. See also 1389.
1423. November 1856. Letter from Sir J Emerson Tennent, Board of Trade, London to the Private Secretary, introducing Mr Lucas, son of the Right Honourable E Lucas, who is going to Oudh to be an indigo planter.
1424. January to February 1857. Letter from Major G Ramsay, Resident at Nepal, Katmandu. States his reasons for objecting to Mr Cameron's coming to Katmandu. The Nepalese Government have made it an invariable practice to discourage the entrance of foreigners to Nepal. Copy of reply, the Governor General agrees with Major Ramsay's views about Mr Cameron's visit. Mr Cameron has been warned to write to Ramsay before he sets out to Nepal. Copy of earlier letter about this; copy of letter to Ramsay, sending a copy of a letter to Cameron, and his reply. See also 1374, 1381, 1483.

1425a. January 1857. Copy of reply to the Honourable E A Blundell, Governor of the Straits Settlement, Singapore. Acknowledges the receipt of letter and enclosures.
